Social Construction of Individual Aging

According to WHO (2002), societies are aging, and it is possible to observe an unprecedented demographic transformation in the history of humanity. The success of social transformations in welcoming healthy aging is proportional to the precariousness of the mechanisms we have to deal with fragile and dependent old age. It is a fact that we added years of life to the general population, however, the inexorability of old age can only be avoided if there is a premature death. For many the last years of life are devastated by chronic illness, disability or dementia, and increased dependence. From the historical point of view of humanity, we are a succession of generations, increasingly old, supported by the illusion of renewal. The past was younger than the present and the future will be even older. This article intends to present a reflection about the social construction of individual aging, carried out during the research on the Promotion and Preservation of Dignity in the context of care in nursing homes, in the context of the PhD in Nursing of the University of Lisbon, Portugal.

Crazy Lady is an early old woman and needs care

“Old Age is a way of feeling cold that assaults me/ and a certain acidity”: that’s the beginning of a poem of Adélia Prado, in which she deals with the thematic of aging, old age and the care that is necessary in this phase of life. In opposition to the initial impression that these stanzas transmit to us, the perspective of Adélia Prado on this entire poem and on the other poems that we’ll discuss in this article, is the concern for the elderly, for instrumental practices of care, and for the bio-political, humanitarian and democratic conditions that may optimize the elderly life in our society. Adélia Prado has an illusio about the inexorable of old age and we will discuss this illusio. We will also discuss dispositions towards care that are evoked in her poems. These care practices may alleviate the “natural” physical, psychosocial deconstructions that old age might bring to all of us. In this work we deal with conceptual elements from Simone de Beauvoir, Leonardo Boff, Pierre Bourdieu and others.

Aging is a challenge that in recent years has been the object of study in modern society. We all try to understand and understand aging and intervene to reduce its natural effects by avoiding the exclusion of the elderly and, instead, by promoting their integration into society. One issue that arises in Portugal and in more modern societies is the great development of information technologies. These processes led to greater dependence in Portugal on everyday matters such as access to banking services, finances, appointment of appointments, collection of medicine in pharmacies and even purchases. In this article, we highlight the issue of info-exclusion and infointervention among the elderly and present some results of the use of information technologies by the elderly in Portugal.

Cuidado; Cuidador principal; Síndrome Demencial.

The aging process causes the individual physiologic-functional changes, with increased demand for care, due to limitations and loss of functional capacity. There is an increase in chronic-degenerative diseases, such as dementias, characterized by syndromes of diverse etiologies, whose fundamental aspect is memory impairment, and of at least one other cognitive function (language, praxia, gnosis or executive functions), compromising the occupational or social functioning, representing functional decline. The greater the dependence of an individual, the greater the burden on the caregiver; hence, it is important to consider the overload as an aspect worthy of detailed investigation to guide an intervention that assists in the caring process. This study aims to verify if there is an association between the level of overload and the socio-demographic, clinical and psycho-cognitive variables of caregivers and elderly patients with Demential Syndrome. This is an analytical, cross-sectional study with convenience sample, with 20 elderly caregivers with DS. It was concluded that the highest levels of overload are in caregivers of elderly with DS and pulmonary disease, not married life, female, associated with irritability and degree of kinship with demented; the children, with the highest levels. Reduced overload in caregivers who practiced physical activity and without a history of falls.
