Nutritional factors associated with mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19

Background & aims: Malnutrition is a risk factor that can lead to diminished physical and mental function and impaired clinical outcome from diseases. This study was performed to investigate the influence of nutritional characteristics, age and the presence of pre-comorbidities in hospital mortality or medical discharge in a sample of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: This historical cohort study was conducted in adults and elderly patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to a nursing ward at the University Hospital of Brasilia (Brazil). Data regarding demographics, comorbidities, laboratory parameters, nutritional characteristics (NRS 2002, SARC-F, BMI) and discharge or death were retrospectively extracted from medical records. Differences in each group (in-hospital mortality or discharge) were assessed using unpaired Student's t test for continuous variables, or Pearson Chi-square tests for categorical data. Results: A total of 222 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled in this study. Nutritional risk and sarcopenia risk were higher in patients who died compared to patients who were discharged (3.55 ± 1.30 vs 2.96 ± 1.30; p ¼ 0.005, 6.81 ± 1.84 vs 4.96 ± 2.95; p < 0.001, respectively). BMI, albumin, and total protein were lower in mortality group than in the discharge group (25.10 ± 5.46 vs 27.82 ± 6.76; p ¼ 0.009, 2.81 ± 0.62 vs 3.27 ± 0.53; p < 0.001, 6.08 ± 0.87 vs 6.48 ± 0.86; p ¼ 0.007, respectively). The mean age between groups was also different with a higher age in the mortality group (70.24 ± 16.23) than in the discharge group (60.54 ± 16.57). Conclusions: Uses of validated tools to identify risk for malnutrition and sarcopenia would be beneficial in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in order to optimize the treatment between them.

How do consumers understand food processing? : a study on the Brazilian population

Food guides are official documents that guide consumers’ food choices. They inform the qualitative classification of food groups and messages on how to adopt a healthy diet. The classifications and nomenclatures adopted in these documents vary according to cultural, nutritional, and scientific criteria. This study aimed to evaluate the understanding of Brazilian consumers regarding food classification according to the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population (FGBP) concepts. An instrument was constructed to assess consumer understanding. It was named “Understanding of the Level of Processing of Food” (ULPF) and validated according to the concepts of constructs presented by psychometrics such as the Delphi methodology. The instrument was composed of 36 items approved by experts (concordance > 80% and with good internal consistency). A total of 2333 Brazilians from all regions participated in the study. The results suggest that food classification according to the level of processing was difficult for participants to understand. About 85% of them did not understand or did not know the definitions and classification of food and preparations according to food and science technology (FST) and the FGBP. More than 50% of the participants believed that it was easier to classify food according to food groups.

Are vegan alternatives to meat products healthy? : a study on nutrients and main ingredients of products commercialized in Brazil

Proteins are essential components in human nutrition, and animal products are usually the primary sources of human ingestion. However, the number of adherents to vegetarian and vegan diets has grown significantly, highlighting the need for alternatives to replace animal proteins. Meat substitutes aim to mimic the nutritional value and sensory characteristics of meat. However, studies suggest differences in their composition. This study is the first to evaluate Brazilian meat substitutes’ nutritional quality and ingredients. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was performed in three steps: (i) Sample mapping of products commercialized nationwide; (ii) Ingredients and nutritional data collection and classification; (iii) Statistical analysis. One hundred twenty-five meat substitutes were included and described. The primary protein sources were soy, gluten, and pea protein ingredients. Vegan meat substitutes presented similar energy and protein values, with few exceptions among samples, with vegan canned fish alternatives presenting less protein than their counterparts. Overall vegan products did not differ regarding sodium levels but showed high amounts to compose a lunch or dinner meal. Vegan meat substitutes showed higher carbohydrates, dietary fiber concentrations, and few differences regarding total and saturated fat. Vegan meat substitutes may contribute to the adherence and maintenance of vegan and vegetarian diets. However, future studies about the implemented ingredients are needed.

Numerical-experimental study of neighboring wind effects on tall buildings related to serviceability via reliability

Adaptation and evidence of validity of the corporate ethical virtues scale in Brazil : a measure of ethical culture in organisations

Introduction: Ethical culture stands out as an important variable in comprehending ethical norms and ethical behaviour at work. The Corporate Ethical Virtues (CEV) Scale is a widely used measure of ethical culture in organisations. This study aimed to adapt and validate the CEV Scale to a Brazilian context. Method. In Study 1 (n = 1.219), the CEV Scale was translated and adapted, the reliability and the internal structure were tested and the discriminant validity of ethical climate measures was demonstrated. In Study 2 (n = 635), measurement invariance in two groups was demonstrated, and there was evidence of validity based on the relationships with related constructs. Results. The results indicated that the Brazilian version of the CEV Scale showed reasonable psychometric properties and provided evidence of convergent and discriminant validity. Conclusion. This measure can be used by managers and consultants to diagnose ethical organisational culture.

A review of arduino and salesforce for data collection and storage designed for microclimate monitoring

This paper discusses the creation of a prototype station for monitoring microclimate and other variables such as carbon dioxide air concentration level and globe temperature through components that gather, process and store data from low-cost sensors. Its general purpose is to provide data on climate and other more granular features, such as microclimate. The specific objective was to seek solutions for the issue of securely storing microclimate data collected by the prototype using an Arduino open-source hardware board. The proposal to use Salesforce's PaaS computational cloud for data storage allows for the existence, with the current state of technology, of several tools capable of assisting both in collecting data as well as in securely storing them for later analysis. The study and the creation of such a prototype station for monitoring microclimate and other variables were carried out in the city of Campinas/SP. In the end, it was concluded that the station was efficient due to the accuracy of the data obtained by most sensors interfaced with Arduino and recorded on Salesforce's platform with the use of the NodeMCU Wi-Fi module. Some objectives were not met as one of the sensors was faulty and the integration between Arduino and NodeMCU could not be completed due to time constraints.

An overview on immunogenic cell death in cancer biology and therapy

Immunogenic cell death (ICD) is a modality of regulated cell death that is sufficient to promote an adaptive immune response against antigens of the dying cell in an immunocompetent host. An important characteristic of ICD is the release and exposure of damage-associated molecular patterns, which are potent endogenous immune adjuvants. As the induction of ICD can be achieved with conventional cytotoxic agents, it represents a potential approach for the immunotherapy of cancer. Here, different aspects of ICD in cancer biology and treatment are reviewed.
