<p>One of the most important objectives of this journal is the greater popularization of contemporary Portuguese historiography, as well as the related goal of a deeper understanding on the part of the international academic community of research being done in Portuguese history in all its varied fields and many methodological traditions. In this sense, the increase in internationally-oriented work on the part of Portuguese historical researchers – which expands the audience for this research – presents itself as the logical corollary to this journal’s aforementioned objective. For this reason it should be understood that this subject appears straightaway in the first issue of the journal, included in the section devoted to topics for discussion. This has from the start looked to be one of the most dynamic aspects of this publication.</p>

<p>É apenas no século XV que a cronística régia portuguesa ganha a sua forma inequívoca. No texto seguinte analisam-se as respectivas crónicas como um discurso de identidade e de poder da Coroa. Assim, são seleccionados três tópicos pela sua importância e pelo relevo que lhes é dado. São eles o território objecto de observação, o sujeito central da narrativa e a questão dos autores dos relatos historiográficos, ou seja a posição em que os cronistas se colocam e a perspectiva que adoptam na descrição que fazem dos acontecimentos.</p>

<p>It was a great pleasure for me to be given this chance to write a reply to António Manuel Hespanha’s review of my book (O terramoto político (1755-1759) : memória e poder, Lisboa : Ediual, [D.L. 2007]. - 175 p.) in conjunction with Nuno Monteiro’s biography of José I, both of them dealing with the same period. Furthermore, these comments could mark the beginning of a debate that is fundamental for historians of 18th-century Portugal, namely on the genealogy and political meaning of Pombalism.</p>

<p>After a survey of the natural resources in the different areas of the Portuguese territory, the effects of the overseas expansion on these sectors were studied. An excessive demand was noted, given the scale of the available resources, together with the general incapacity to rapidly replace them. The serious involvement of all social classes in the realm’s principal political projects was demonstrated, as well as the existence of leaderships and the financial and technical resources necessary for ensuring Portuguese primacy in European expansion. Urgency justified the overexploitation of resources and the heavy tax burden, but it also compromised the country’s future, with its small metropolitan space proving incapable of sustaining a lengthy revitalization effort, hence the title of this paper.</p>

<p>In 1999, at a conference on the teaching of history promoted by the Portuguese Association of History Teachers, it seemed possible to me to state as follows: “Present-day historiographic practice has not only abandoned the great syntheses of the past, but it has also made it practically impossible to produce smaller syntheses. It calls into question the very notion of “epoch”, and, furthermore, of “period”, that used to form the fundamental bases for the work of reconstructing the past and its interpretation.” The theme that was chosen for today’s meeting, the fact of our dealing precisely with a recently published synthesis (that of the History of Portugal edited by Rui Ramos), and of this having met with great success as a publication, seems to contradict what I considered to be evident at that time. I also wonder if it is still possible to maintain what I said then about the notions of epoch and period.</p>

<p>The historiography written about Portugal has been particularly productive over the last three decades. There has also been no shortage of histories of Portugal attempting to produce syntheses, some more analytical, others less so, and almost all of them published in Portuguese.</p>

<p>This History of Portugal has the advantage of presenting in one single volume a comprehensive vision of the past, from the foundation of the kingdom to contemporary history. It is not a history written by one single author, and thus follows a different approach from that of Oliveira Marques, who clearly stands as the previous most professional and efficient historian engaging with this genre. The decision was the right one: each of the three authors knows his period of specialization well.</p>

<p>Este texto discute o processo de desenvolvimento da ligação mercantil entre cidades portuárias na costa centro-sul da América portuguesa e as províncias do Rio da Prata no período de 1796 a 1821. Para chegar a esta conclusão foram levantados dados nos livros de registro de embarcações do porto de Montevidéu, mapas de importação e exportação produzidos pela Mesa de Comércio do Rio de Janeiro e correspondência oficial pelo governador da capitania de São Paulo. Vários tipos de produtos foram trocados neste circuito. A liberalização da economia do atlântico português neste período fortaleceu uma ligação mercantil que já existia desde o século XVII entre a América portuguesa e as províncias do Rio da Prata.</p>

<p>Desde a sua emergência, nos anos cinquenta do século XX, que a teoria do capital humano, e o subsequente desenvolvimento da economia da educação, tem havido um interesse crescente acerca das origens do pensamento económico sobre educação. Na literatura anglo-saxónica existe um consenso acerca do interesse limitado da maioria dos economistas anteriores acerca desse assunto. No entanto, o mesmo parece não se aplicar a outros contextos económicos e culturais. Neste texto analisa-se o pensamento de José Joaquim Rodrigues de Freitas (24.1.1840 – 27.7.1896), um dos mais influentes intelectuais e economistas Portugueses da segunda metade do século XIX, dando particular atenção à sua reflexão das questões educativas no quadro dos seus escritos de economia política, as quais considerava serem da maior importância social e política. O texto discute a originalidade dessas reflexões, nomeadamente através do modo como relaciona os aspetos educativos com a realidade económica.</p>

<p>Este artigo analisa a experiência dos presos políticos no troço final do Estado Novo. Tomando a cadeia do Forte de Peniche como ponto de observação, explorase o modo como as identidades políticas foram definidas, e até reforçadas, através do conflito com as dinâmicas coercivas emanadas da prisão. O confinamento, as regras, o isolamento, a vigilância e a punicão construíram uma teia punitiva destinada à produção de “corpos dóceis”. Diante disso, os presos contrapuseram estratégias de resistência que não só buscavam elidir a realidade objectiva da clausura como reafirmar a sua subjectividade militante. O artigo explora o papel das clivagens ideológicas entre os presos na operacionalização de distintas culturas de reivindicação e modos de vivenciar o quotidiano do cárcere, mostrando ao mesmo tempo como a vida prisional interagia com dinâmicas políticas mais amplas.</p>

<p>Companhia das Letras has been publishing a judicious selection of biographies of leading figures from the History of Brazil since 2006. Not surprisingly, José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva was one of those chosen for inclusion in this list of Brazilian personalities. The task of writing his biography was handed to Miriam Dolhnikoff.</p>

<p>The title of the publication [The past that doesn’t pass. The shadow of dictatorships over Southern Europe and Latin America] reveals the author’s concerns with keeping alive the memory of “a past” that cannot be forgotten. However, the purpose of this book goes far beyond encouraging people to remember the horrors perpetrated during the dictatorships that marked the history of the twentieth century: the different chapters introduce interpretations that contribute to a wider understanding of the meaning of the traumatic experiences suffered in a past that has left enduring marks of authoritarianism in the political culture of Southern Europe and Latin American nations. This publication is especially important for the Brazilian public because it analyzes different aspects of dictatorships that were similar to the one occurring in Brazil after the coup of 1964.</p>

<p>Esta investigação focaliza gostos, hábitos, práticas e tradições alimentares dos portugueses emigrados para São Paulo/Br, destacando o papel das mulheres. Recuperaram-se as experiências alimentares no cotidiano (questões do abastecimento, práticas e tradições da cozinha) através da história oral e de vários outros documentos, num diálogo que revelou lembranças e esquecimentos, memórias de sabores, imagens e aromas, temperados com lágrimas e saudades.</p>

<p>O presente artigo tendo como fonte de pesquisa o Boletim de Informação, para o período de 1948-1974, aborda a emigração do Concelho da Maia, para a América Latina – Brasil e Venezuela. Estas fontes revelam os dados estatísticos relativos às características dos emigrantes do concelho da Maia: volume, destino, género, naturalidade, idades e profissões. Registamos, assim até aos anos 1960, uma emigração virada, sobretudo, para a América do Sul, tendo sido a Venezuela, o país de escolha privilegiado. Após o ano de 1961, aliada a uma Europa, mais apetecível em termos económicos e devido à conjuntura que Portugal atravessava, com o deflagrar da Guerra Colonial portuguesa, os emigrantes mudaram de rota, atravessando os Pirenéus em busca de um novo El Dorado.</p>

<p>Este trabalho aborda as interpretações das representações do fenómeno emigratório na imprensa portuense, particularmente numa fase em que se vislumbrava a recuperação dos índices da emigração portuguesa no período pós-Primeira Guerra Mundial, após uma breve descontinuidade motivada essencialmente pelo conflito mundial.</p>

<p>Em janeiro de 1960, durante o governo de Juscelino Kubitschek, foi realizada na cidade de São Paulo a 1.ª Conferência Pró-Anistia aos Presos Políticos de Espanha e Portugal. Armando Falcão, ministro da Justiça de JK, enviou ordem expressa ao governador de São Paulo para proibir a conferência. Contrariando o ministro e o próprio JK, o governador Carlos Alberto de Carvalho Pinto autorizou o evento, que aconteceu na Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo, com repercussão internacional. Na direção do evento estava, entre outros, o general Humberto Delgado, ex-candidato à Presidência de Portugal que se encontrava exilado no Brasil. O Fundo DEOPS-SP guarda a documentação policial do Departamento de Ordem Política e Social sobre a conferência, inclusive cópia do ofício secreto enviado por Armando Falcão e desobedecido por Carvalho Pinto. O episódio evidencia distintos posicionamentos de políticos brasileiros acerca do regime salazarista.</p>

<p>Este estudio aborda la cuestión de la emigración española a América en época contemporánea. En una primer parte se analiza, de forma crítica, la cuestión de las causas y factores que incidieron en la emigración en masa entre finales del siglo XIX y mediados del XX. En una segunda se analiza el papel que jugó el asociacionismo español en dicho proceso, comparando el desarrollo general del fenómeno en los principales destinos americanos de los emigrantes españoles.</p>

<p>Anthony Grafton, among others, has written about the phenomenon, and historians in general know it well, that as important as the books or documents sought (but not always found) in libraries and archives may be, so too is the experience itself of visiting such institutions: of making time to read and reflect, of contemplating the shelves and consulting catalogues, and of speaking with librarians and meeting other readers. Gradually, one no longer is a stranger but becomes a member of the club, an institution “groupie” well known and welcomed. The John Carter Brown Library (www.jcbl.org) is one of these special places, capable of providing experiences that go far beyond mere access to books, even if those books are almost always beautiful and rare.</p>

<p>It is one of the paradoxes of Sri Lankan history that the bulk of the historical source material for the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was written in the language of the island’s first European occupiers, the Portuguese. Letters, reports, surveys and chronicles were produced assiduously by the newcomers to reflect upon the realities encountered in Sri Lanka, as in so many other places. It has thus become common for Sri Lankanists interested in the Early Modern period to engage with Portuguese texts. As a consequence, making such texts available in English translation has been one of the priorities of scholars working on the subject since the glory days of the Journal of the Ceylon Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in the late nineteenth century and the Ceylon Antiquary and Literary Register in the 1910s-30s. Amongst the most significant English translations of Portuguese sources are Father Gabriel Perera’s version of Fernão de Queiroz’s Temporal and Spiritual Conquest of Ceylon (Colombo, 1930) and Vito Perniola’s three volumes of sources in The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka – The Portuguese Period (Dehiwala, 1989-91).</p>

<p>This book, organized by André Freire, provides the reader with an insightful and comprehensive analysis of the political systems that existed in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Portugal. Condensing the Portuguese political history of the last two centuries, the book is written both by historians and political scientists and divided into four different sections, with a total of ten chapters. Each section of the book provides a refreshing overview of recent research in the fields of History and Political Science and brings in new data and new interpretations.</p>
