The kitchen and the elderly: universal design of environment and products

We perform a literature review to show the importance of universal design in designing the kitchen environment and some kitchen utensils, focusing on the elderly user. As such, we argue about the importance of the built environment for the elderly and particularly of the kitchen. We also provide examples of universal design solutions for the kitchen and some of its utensils. At the end, we discuss the relevance of this study for an aging society.

Silver Economy, Gerontechnology and Health Economic-Industrial Complex in Brazil: a new- developmentalist vision

This article analyzes the concepts of "Health Economic-Industrial Complex" (Gadelha, 2006) and "Silver Economy" or “Longevity Economy” (Felix, 2007), with the intention of set up its points of intersection which regard to an industrial policy, focused on health and long-term care for the elderly people. It is argued that, faced with population aging, these sectors are strategic in global competition and in the Brazilian foreign trade insertion. From a Marxian-Schumpterian-ECLAC perspective, the proposal for the construction of an economic-industrial complex of health and care is presented. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the macroeconomic limitations and possibilities of the two concepts to be promising in Brazil, which is done in the light of the New-Developmentalism theory (Bresser-Pereira, 2015).

The processes of Social Inclusion, Education and Health: a qualitative analysis of the elderly deaf people of the Distrito Federal

This research arises from the accompaniment of this growing number of deaf people who are now in this phase of life and are facing various difficulties regarding access to these legal institutions. The research consisted of a qualitative and descriptive study, through a semistructured interview, filmed in Libras and transcribed into Portuguese. For the content analysis, the MAXQDA software was used, based on the Bardin (2011) content analysis system. The results showed that the majority of society does not know Libras and is not prepared for this type of communication. It is hoped that the result of this research will present a singular look at the problems experienced by the elderly deaf people, and that it will serve as a support for institutions aimed at serving this portion of society.

Burden in elderly patient care with dementia

Due to the population ageing, the chronic- degenerative diseases have grown. The dementias have been highlighted because of the cognitive progressive loss that compromises the performance on the daily activities, reducing the autonomy and the independence matter. The responsibility for the care provided changes the caregivers’ routine, causing physical and emotional distress. Objectives: evaluate the level of burden taken by the caregivers of patients with dementia and its factors, characterize the patients and caregivers’ samples and identify the daily activities compromised by the dementia. Method: descriptive report, exploratory, approved by the Ethic Committee in Research/ FAMERP statement #358.178, held from September to December in 2013, with 31 caregivers of patients with dementia, assisted in a reference hospital ambulatory.  The caregivers signed the Open Consent and Post Clarification Form, being submitted to questionnaires appliances: Caregiver from Zarit Overburden Scale and semi-structured interviews. Results: As the framework of dementia increases, there is an elderly autonomy and independence reduction. Fisher Exact Test showed a significant statistic in the reduction of leisure activities performance, by the elderly, before and after the state of dementia (p=0,0181). Among the evaluated caregivers, the feminine genre prevailed, with an average of 53±12,4 and the reduction of leisure activities performance, by the caregivers, before and after they undertook the position of informal caregiver (p=0,0078). Conclusion: the reduction or cancellation of the leisure activity on the daily life implies in these caregivers quality of life, which can be emphasized by the presented burden. The data points to a necessity of attention from the health multidisciplinary team to these caregivers, including the occupational therapist, and enables a reflection about a relevant subject: the care for the caregiver.

Adverse reactions caused by drugs in the oral cavity of the elderly

Introduction: The individuals with advanced age are the ones who consume the greatest number of medications and, as consequence, adverse reactions to these drugs often occur, including in the oral cavity. Objective: These drug-related manifestations deserve attention of health professionals so that they are properly diagnosed and actions are taken to reduce or eliminate them. Material and methods: In this article, we reviewed original articles, published from 2000 to 2018, reporting these reactions in elderly patients. Articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish were searched, using terms relevant to the topic, published online in the CAPES journals databases. The articles were selected after reading their titles and summaries and, then, the complete articles. Results: Among the 12 articles showing adverse drug reactions in the oral cavity of the elderly, we had: 6 (50%) with xerostomia and its consequences; 2 (17%) with oral ulcerations consequent to the use of nicorandil; 2 (17%) with osteonecrosis of the mandible (bisphosphonate and bevacizumab, one in each); and 1 (8.3%) with ageusia (associated with romidepsin) and 1 (8.3%) with oral candidiasis (associated with inhaled corticosteroids). Conclusion: The elderly require increased attention during medical consultations and dental procedures, due to the association of different chronic diseases and the continuous use of several medications. There is a need for a greater number of publications focusing on this theme in this age group, especially in those longevous senior individuals.

Celebrating the 20 years of this Magazine...

This journal, affiliated to the Faculty of Human Sciences and Health (FACHS / PUC-SP), in its volume 20, celebrates, two decades of uninterrupted academic placement, fidelity to a time that the name Kairós enunciates. It is from this volume 20 (1) that the happy institution of the DOI is also celebrated for the works published in its four regular volumes, with works concerned with issues such as longevity, aging, old age, and the problems of the elderly.Endeavor and resistance to countless hands, in the case of this magazine, to researchers, authors, referees, and an editorial team that has been renewed, which contributed during these 20 years so that one could publish, with rigor but not without lightness, the diversity inherent in aging, and, with great luck, receiving more and more texts in interface with other areas of knowledge. Our respectful tribute to all! We were able to move on and on: semiannually, the magazine became four-monthly and some quarterly. From a few works, a fixed number of 25 works per number was opened, being open to internationalization, in the sense of receiving works in its trilingual format (Portuguese-PB or PE, Spanish and English), bilingual or monolingual languages, also in French or Italian). And not only from the results of research in articles at the post-doc, doctoral and master's level, but also from the undergraduate level, along with the supervisors (scientific initiation, completion of specialization courses, improvement ...). Finally, a magazine that proposes to welcome especially works of young-researchers who, motivated, can continue to be guided, from so many and valuable suggestions of the referees, to improve their academic-scientific writing - and not to give up that work that does not leave to be a challenge to beginners. It is worth noting how much each issue privileges works coming from the most diverse Brazilian states, also bringing articles by foreign authors, which means that the magazine welcomes papers that meet the criteria of regionality, as well as internationality. The work of this volume ratifies some tendencies: (i) the partnership of two or more writers in the writing of an article; (ii) affiliated with different areas / Programs / Universities, attesting to the interdisciplinary dialogue between different areas and institutions around aging; (iii) the increasing participation of physiotherapists, physical educators, physicians, nutritionists, occupational therapists, gerontologists, nurses, psychologists, pedagogues and social workers; (iv) linguists, speech therapists, researchers of new technologies, also enriching this publishing space.
