Farra do Boi: humanity, animality and legal sensibilities in a judicial decision

The farra do boi, as become knownthe traditional practice of some fishing communities on Santa Catarina coast, which is currently banned by justice on the grounds of animalabuse, is a propitious case to observe the contrasts between different legal sensibilities, aswell as the profound differences between theanthropological making and the work of thejudges. For this, the article seeks to be based onnotions that accompany the modern formationof Western thought, such as the dualistic classification between barbarian and civilized, natureand culture, rural and urban, reaching the Federal Constitution and its articles, that guaranteethe protection of both culture and environment.

Migratory Plans in Cracolândia of São Paulo in the 1990s

The purpose of this article is to present the theme of migration at Cracolândia in the city of São Paulo. This is the name of a downtown region with a high concentration of crack addicts. The study is based on quantitative data, a comparison of trajectories and uses the social history and oral history methodologies. The study began with the question: was the situation of social vulnerability and frustration with the immigration plan of migrants in Cracolândia brought about by narcotic dependence or is it the result of circumstances they encountered in the city of São Paulo? The study found that chemical dependence is only one of various factors, and cannot be held solely responsible for the frustration of migratory plans. The issues presented in this study are audacious, however, they do not aim to fully explain the life trajectories of the people interviewed in Cracolândia, which would go against the countless dynamics existing in the flow.

Protest policing in Brazil: repertoires and models of policing during the cycle of protests of June 2013 in the city of Porto Alegre

The work presents as theme the policing of protests in Brazil. Specifically, we question: What are the repertoires used by the police during the 2013 protest cycle? What model(s) of policing were put into action? The need for the study is justified by the absence of a consolidated field of studies in the country on protest policing; on the other hand, there are international studies dealing with this subject. Methodologically, we analyzed the case of protest policing in Porto Alegre during the cycle of protests of 2013. We analyzed news from Zero Hora and interviews with police officers. We identified the diversity of policing repertoires and the coexistence of two main policing models, which are guided by different criteria of value to be protected in the protest: one based on the defense of physical integrity of protesters and a second one based on the defense of patrimony.

“Too much small talk in Corumbá”: gossip, politics and morality in a Pantanal city

The city of Corumbá-MS, which has around 100,000 inhabitants. From the reading of Bailey (1971) we think the relations established between gossip and politics around personal reputations, and the belonging of people to one or more “moral communities” in the city, which we call the social circuits of gossip. Studying gossip can contribute ethnographically for researches on several elements of the social structure of the city: such as labor relations, on the way of doing business at the border, on local politics and the formation of social hierarchies, migrants flows, about the meanings of love relationships, gender relations, on the construction of social roles, status and social position of individuals in the “map” of the city.

A Politics of Historicism in the Discourse of Multiculturalism Law: the Constitutional Jurisprudence about Indigenous People Identity and the Concept of Nation in Colombia

A politics of historicism determines legal discourse to build a linear narrative of the time in which events happen. This fact produces a chronological view that influences the life of affected people who are under this discourse. Therefore, this article explains how this process takes place in order to evidence the tension between the concept of nation that is embodied in the Political Constitution of Colombia (1991) and, the notion of indigenous people identity that is promoted by multicultural laws. The analysis is based on the most relevant jurisprudential pieces of the Constitutional Court of Colombia towards the problem.

Proposal of cooperation indicators in the shared management of solid waste

The National Solid Waste Policy (BRASIL, 2010) directs governments, companies and civil society to take cooperative responsibility for management plans. In this sense, the work that follows aims to propose an integrated evaluation instrument to measure and classify the degree of cooperation between actors involved in shared solid waste management. Based on a cross-reference between the literature on cooperation in public management and the theoretical and legal debates on the issue of solid waste, 19 indicators were elaborated, divided into four dimensions of cooperation: cognitive, operational, relational and political-institutional. (municipalities, microregions, etc.) and for the evaluation of those responsible (government actors, social actors and economic actors). The proposed indicators provide managers with a clearer picture of the shared waste management structure, allowing timely actions to be planned to ensure partnership between sectors.

The destination of solid waste from innovative companies: the “To do good Law” and its role in environmental and social sustainability

This paper examines how Law n. 11.196, of November 21, 2005, known as “To do good Law”, can contribute to environmental and social sustainability. The “To do good Law” grants tax incentives for companies to carry out technological innovation. The article follows a qualitative analysis, based on bibliographical and documentary research, to argue in favor of the conciliation between the policy of technological innovation and the National Policy of Solid Wastes. Thus, it proposes the adoption of environmental and social responsibility strategies by the companies in relation to solid wastes as a way of social inclusion of waste pickers inserted in collective organizations.

Children's games as a social experience of knowledge elaboration about the phisical world in the early childhood education

With the goal to understand the articulations among play in the children socialexperiences and the knowledge elaboration about the physical world, we report an experience, starting in an action-research, in the Early Childhood Education context witch twenty-threechildren and its teacher, of level IV at a Municipal Center for Early Childhood Education, at Natalcity, RN. Based on theoretical understandings about playing, the objectives set forth in theBrazilian National Curriculum Guidelines for Early Childhood Education and educationalresearch practices, we developed two didactic sequences that involved playing andinvestigative experiences about the rain cycle and the gravity. The interpretations allowed us toconclude that: children have developed thought by making decisions, testing hypotheses andsystematizing, with different languages, their understandings of the natural phenomena thatappeared in their games; the Early Childhood Education is a space for the production of the knowledge that enriches the characteristics of childhood, while enabling to the teacher to become a researcher of their educational practices.

Issues faced by Social Workers in the transsexualization process

This article reflects on the possibilities for social workers in the Brazilian transsexualization process based on a documentary research in resolutions and ethical-political devices produced by the Brazilian Social Work. We discuss here the social name defense, the struggle against transvestiphobia, work with the families, the social assistance networks and the construction of the health conscience, as a rich field for professional intervention in this program. The conclusion is that although there is no specific technical note to offer a reference for the social workers practice in this program, the guidelines for professional work with the transgender population provided in the National Health System (SUS) are included in the Professional Ethical-Political Project.

Practices and epistemic movements in the analysis about the results of an experimental inquiry practical activity

This paper is inserted in the studies about discursive interactions in Science Teaching. The goal is to verify which Epistemic Practices and Epistemic Movements are present throughout the analysis of the results in an experimental inquiry practical activity. Thus, it is intended to characterize the proposition of explanations in the interactions between teachers and students. For this, we selected two episodes of a class about the photosynthesis and respiration theme, taught with students of the 7th Middle School. Our results indicate the teachers’ contributions in order that the students could move from the hypothesis formulation’, based on the identification of the light as the experimental variable, to the development of explanations that incorporated the concepts. The resume of prior information allows the ordering of data, which seemed to be important for students to organize information and establish conceptual bases for the subsequent interpretation of the obtained data.

Leadership and Culture: Tradition and Renewal of Research

Leadership and culture are inseparable social phenomena. There is no leadership without culture. Leadership is itself a cultural and cross-cultural activity, dealing with cultural issues and struggles related to leaders and followers in the most varied organizational, regional, national and international contexts. However, research on leadership and culture is still conducted in a segmented and fragmented manner in the academic works, lacking a more robust systematization. Because of the significant increase in intercultural relations and the excessive focus on leaders, it becomes imperative to know and discuss the innovations in such research.  This article aims to bring together different research streams about the relationship between leadership and culture, providing an overview of the field, and to point out pesrpectives for future work. For that, a literature review involving leadership and culture was done. The works found were categorized, analyzed, and new perspectives were discussed. In particular, this article highlights the role of leadership in the context of cultural diversity and of cultural practice as important vectors for reflection and production of future research.

Writing-body-experience and literature: what can writing (in a [mathematics education] research)?

This article deals with the writing as creative power, as a possibility that is opened to the experience of an action that involves relations between body and power. For this, conceptual movements of a doctoral research were approached through a writing-experimentation. It is practiced a written cartography nigh literature, in which a fictional narrative was woven, a small story that helped to explain the concepts to be worked in the research. This created a body graphy that helps to problematize a discourse of appropriations. In this sense, a writing-body was assumed, choosing a policy of hybrid writing, which defoliated concepts that were engendered in researching and in creating a research her/him/self at researching and writing. The problematization proposed here has the power of helping many others who may be affected by this text, to envisage another way of doing research, in which the words can give force and power to their own moments, and that the researcher is constituted by writing (her/him/self).
