Social science undergrads at UFSC: Reflecting on (some of) their experiences, point of views and trajectories
This article aims at reconstructing the social, educational and academic trajectories of graduates in Social Sciences, at our university, from a material of twelve in-depth interviews with such graduates during 2000s. Firstly, we discuss the different dynamics and paths to ‘choosing’ the degree in Social Sciences among interviewees from different sociocultural backgrounds, considering, as the literature points out, both the “expectations readjustments” that can lead to careers of lesser social prestige, as well as the unique socialization experiences that inculcate, in some of our interviewees, specific propensities and interests towards our career. Subsequently, we discuss some issues that were indistinctly thematized by interviewees from different sociocultural backgrounds, as, for instance, the theme of the “non-material gains” that interviewees routinely associate to their degree in Social Sciences despite the difficulties of professionalization frequently narrated by them.

Reproductive phenology of shrubs and trees in a Cerrado area of Mogi Guaçu, SP, Brazil
The reproductive phenology of shrubs and trees in an area of Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) in the Mogi Guaçu Biological Reserve (22°10’S; 47°11’W) was studied from September 2009 to May 2013. In a 900 m2 transect, individuals were marked, and the total number of flowers and fruits was estimated monthly. The data were analyzed using circular statistics to determine the periods of most intense flowering and fruiting in the community, according to their dispersal modes. Flowering occurred between October and November. Fruiting was distributed continuously throughout the year, with r values up to 0.3. In the last period of observation, fruiting was more intense in December, probably due to zoochorous species. For the three main families, Myrtaceae flowering and fruiting occurred between August and September, Malpighiaceae flowering occurred in November and fruiting was between December and January, and Vochysiaceae flowering was in January and fruiting was in March. In general, a main characteristic of the community was the weak seasonality of its reproductive phenology. However, reproductive events tended to take place in the hottest months of the year.

The translation of wordplays in a literary corpus: a review of Delabastita's framework based on corpus linguistics
This paper analyzes the translation of wordplay from a literary corpus, the novel “O Xangô de Baker Street” (SOARES, 1995), translated into English by Clifford Landers in 1997, and does so based on the framework of Delabastita (1996) for wordplay’s translation. The study uses the theoretical-methodological approach of Corpus Linguistics and is characterized as “corpus driven” (TOGNINI-BONELLI, 2001). The analysis of the translations showed that Delabastita's framework can cope with only part of the procedures observed in the translation of the wordplay investigated, and as a result, the study proposes to expand the mentioned framework, by means of the addition of four new strategies for wordplays' translation.

Translation of Hybridism: Analysis of the Portuguese Version of The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
As a writer of American literature, while being of Chinese extraction, Amy Tan was born and raised in the United States. In her works, we sometimes notice the appearance of marks of the Chinese language, which is sometimes evident in the discourse of a bilingual person. In addition, her works are also full of cultural words strongly linked to traditional Chinese culture that, when translated, find lexical gaps in the target language, producing divergence and loss of meaning. Through the analysis of linguistic and cultural hybridity in the Portuguese translation of The Joy Luck Clubby her, we intend to highlight how these hybrid phenomena are transposed from the source text to the target text, to help readers better understand the functions and translational results of these hybrid phenomena.

Translation as cultural mediation: the translation of Junot Díaz books
This article has as its object the translations of the Dominican American writer Junot Díaz to Spanish, with special emphasis on the work of the Cuban-born translator Achy Obejas. Author of a short but remarkable work, Díaz elaborates his narratives in a variety of English that often incorporates elements of Spanish. His writing poetics includes the lexicon of Caribbean Spanish and syntactic structures and proper rhythm of his native language, which results in a strongly hybrid text. The translation of this text into a language that is so intensely present in the original is a challenge. To understand how the construction of this translation is processed, this article tries to analize the strategies used to try to keep up with the translinguistic character of these narratives. In order to reach this objective, some theoretical references are used, concepts such as the foreignizing translation, by Lawrence Venuti; translingualism; and D'Amore's considerations on translations of texts originally written in Spanglish. The analysis makes it clear that the work of Achy Obejas was largely able to give the texts in Spanish the same hybrid character present in the original ones.

Morphological characteristics of the esophagus of Bradypus variegatus (Schinz, 1825)
Bradypus variegatus, commonly known as the brown-throated sloth, belongs to a distinct group of mammals with some morphological and biological peculiarities that have already been described. However, little is known about the structure of its digestive tract, including the morphology of the esophagus. Unlike mammals in general, the esophagus sphincter of B. variegatus starts dorsally to the larynx and diverts to the left of the trachea, remaining adjacent to it, in the left antimer along the entire cervical portion. In the thorax, it follows the mediastinum and crosses the diaphragm through the esophageal hiatus before reaching the stomach. Histologically, it exhibits the same tissue pattern throughout the three portions, including three muscular layers, thickening in the thoracic portion, and adventitia surrounded by the sympathetic nerve chain, adjacent to the cardiac region. These histological characteristics show that the esophagus architecture of this species is peculiar, which may explain the swallowing behavior of this animal in relation to its postural habits.

Globalizing Labour History: the case of International Labor and Working-Class History
The present article traces the trajectory of the journal International Labor and Working-Class History (ILWCH) over the last two decades as it shifted from a journal focused almost exclusively on Europe to a more global perspective. Although interest in globalization as a phenomenon emerged in the pages of the journal in the mid-1990s, the approach adopted by Charles Tilly, in a major 1995 article in ILWCH on this question, still relected a highly Eurocentric approach to labor history. But in the following decade, the composition of the editorial board began to change, and a series of articles – several authored by the Dutch social historian Marcel van der Linden – argued for a new, genuinely global approach to labor history. Among the implications of this new Global Labor History is a rethinking of the historical category of labor or worker and the relationship of precarious and unfree labor to the history of capitalism. At the same time, historians whose work focuses on regions in the “Global South” have questioned some of the premises of Global Labor History and criticized its tendency to promote a type of “convergence narrative” that still privileges the historical experiences of capitalism in the “Global North.”

The k'ajchas and the projects of industry and nation in Bolivia (1935-1940)
The 1938 Convention took place under the presidential administration of “Military Socialists”, as a result of the political crisis generated by the Chaco War (1932-1935), proclaiming political measures that would be implemented during the rest of the twentieth century (an increased role of the state in the economy, land distribution, public policies on natural resources, and indigenous and women citizenships). One of the topics considered was weather to rent Potosi's abandoned mines to the so called K’ajchas. Who were they? Were they small bosses and mine owners? Were they proletarian workers or primitive miners? Would they have to be favored even though they possessed obsolete and backward system of exploitation or create an industrial system under state control? The study reconstructs, based on newspapers of that period and on Reports of the Convention, the situation of the K’ajchas in a context of the tin economic crisis and the country`s political upheaval. Also is analyzed the diferent interpretations and projects that were debated around topics such as the presence of large mining enterprises like Mauricio Hothchilds’s mines, mining proletarians or small scale mining owners. One of the central arguments discussed was weather the industrialization development plan that emerged from the Convention should consider small miners enterprises or state controlled workers.

The Universal History between the Writing of History and the Atlantic Crossing: Production and Circulation of French Textbooks in Brazil (1820-1855)
The Précis de l'Histoire Ancienne, by Charles Cayx and Auguste Poirson, along with four more précis, integrated an innovative proposal of a History course for the French collèges royaux. This collection, completed in 1830, would be adopted by the Brazilian government in 1838, in a translated edition, for the recently opened Imperial Colégio de Pedro II. The purpose of this article is to make an analysis that intertwines, on the one hand, the accommodation between the perspectives of Bossuet’s Universal History and the Enlightenment of Heeren – resulting from the exercise of a writing of History under the specificity of both the support (the précis) and the public which it was aimed at – and, on the other hand, the fact that this writing of history integrates projects of nation and civilization of the Brazilian Empire when crossing the Atlantic. In this analysis, we identified tensions and disputes for the construction of the intelligibility of history in a battlefield that was not unique to historians: the textbook.
