The aging illogical body: Multiple responses to the passage of time

Prudence and vigilance mark the accelerated phenomenon of population aging, which demonstrates an international concern in the field of health, politics, and economics. Aging starts justifying the redefinition of policies and programs that aim to transform the global profile of old age. New political modes for the management of the elderly population are emerging. Aging is now conceived in accordance with strict normative standards. The biological view of aging predominates. Old age becomes the subject of a number of practices that are linked to medical discourse, from healthy aging to quality of life and old age. The illogical aging body refers to the understanding that, despite all social frames, growing old can become a transgressive process, by challenging aesthetic standards and the cultural and political modeling. The illogical, unexpected, insurgent can be an affirmative and sensitive component of the life of those who age.

Kinesiotherapy applied to elderly patients after total knee prosthesis: a methodological quality study

We sought clinical trials published in the last ten years on prosthetized elderly who underwent kinesiotherapeutic protocols to recover functionality after full knee prosthesis. A literature review was performed in the PEDro, PubMed and SciELO databases. Most studies presented effective protocols for elderly patients with total knee prosthesis that consisted of isometric, isotonic, aerobic, and resistance therapeutic exercise programs.

Evaluation of the pressoric threshold of the elderly pelvic floor

Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study with the objective of assessing the pressure threshold of the pelvic floor of 14 elderly women. An adapted evaluation form and a manual dynamometer were used to assess the pressure pain threshold. The pressure threshold for pain in the pelvic floor was similar between the sides and did not show statistically significant differences. The internal consistency was considered satisfactory. Further research is needed to better identify the reasons and consequences of pelvic pain in elderly women.

Profile of elderly with femoral fractures admitted to a university hospital

The aim of this study was to analyze the profile and risk of in-hospital death and after 30 days of discharge of elderly people who came into contact with the femur from September 2015 to July 2016. This is a cohort study from the quantitative, longitudinal and prospective type. There was no association between femur fracture and in-hospital death and up to 30 days after discharge; however, the elderly diagnosed with femur fracture were associated with the development of in-hospital complications and hospital immobility.

Aquatic kinesiotherapy applied to balance disorders in the elderly: a methodological quality study

Balance dysfunctions can occur due to the aging process. This is a methodological study carried out to identify and discuss therapeutic exercise programs carried out in the aquatic environment applied to balance disorders in the elderly. Therapeutic exercise programs carried out in the aquatic environment of the resisted and non-resisted type carried out in the short to long, medium and long term have been suggested. Kinesiotherapeutic exercises are effective in maintaining and improving the balance of the elderly. However, more studies with good methodological quality need to be conducted for a better basis in clinical practice.

Advanced Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and the individuation process of elderly centenarians in Florianópolis, SC

This study aims to identify the Advanced Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (AIADL), which are present in the choices and activities of elderly centenarians living in the mesoregion of the Greater Florianópolis Area, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. It also aims to show AIADL as mediators of life habits, which can expand the individuation process among elderly centenarians. This study is a descriptive and qualitative research and used as a basis the question “What is your daily life like at the age of 100 or older?”. Based on the analysis of the responses from eight (8) subjects, we observed that the leisure activities, daily tasks and social roles experienced by elderly centenarians during their lifetime influence their choices and their satisfaction with the activities they perform in their present everyday life. The subjects highlighted the fact that, through advanced instrumental activities, they seek capacity and power towards individuation. To them, the desire of living a full life through the diversity of ageing is to continue desiring with an opinion and willingness to make decisions about their own life.

Genital self-image and sexual function of elderly with and without fibromyalgia

Study aiming to compare the perception of genital self-image and sexual function of elderly women with and without fibromyalgia of 28 elderly women divided into two groups, with fibromyalgia (GFM) and without fibromyalgia (GS). The evaluation was done using the evaluation form adapted from Etienne and Waitman, FGSIS (Female Genital Self-Image Scale) and FSFI (Female Sexual Function Index). Elderly women in both groups consider themselves to have a positive genital self-image. GFM has worse sexual function.

Day center for the elderly and analysis of users' family APGAR on the functionality of their family system: an experience report

This study, descriptive and cross-sectional, aimed to analyze the family APGAR of elderly people with dependencies on the functionality of their respective family systems, through the medical records of a day center. The results show that the majority of the elderly are female and are between 70 and 89 years old. In calculating the family APGAR, 60% indicate family systems with good function (mild or absent dysfunction) and 40% with significant dysfunction (moderate and severe). It is recommended that during the application of the instrument, open-ended questions be asked to the dimension that scores the least to explore the weakness in the family function.

Performance of physical exercises in aquatic in women with low bone mineral density

Osteoporosis is the most common bone metabolism disorder, characterized by bone mineral density (BMD), which leads to a deterioration of bone mass and structure, increasing bone fragility and a higher risk of fracture. Minor damage to stress and speed of physical activity, increasing speed and getting denser. However, studies seek to analyze and compare therapeutic resources (water and soil) for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis / osteoporosis. Two exercise protocols (soil and water) were investigated for age changes and low BMD. As Methods, elderly women with low BMD screened by inclusion / exclusion criteria, with 17 of them obeying them. For the Assessment, a questionnaire with a history of falls, anthropometric measurements, assessment of flexibility and balance, muscle strength and bone mineral densitometry. Subsequently, the elderly were divided into two groups: Aquatic Therapy (GA) and Solo (GS), in two weekly sessions of strengthening and balance training, 50 minutes, eight weeks. At the end, reassessment of the participants. As Results: exercise in an aquatic environment increased the Berg balance scale (BSE) score and flexibility compared to the control group. Despite the increase in muscle strength, compared to the pre-assessment, there was no significant difference between the intervention groups after the exercise protocols. It was concluded that both are effective in the treatment of osteopenia / osteoporosis, with greater adherence by participants in GA. There was no significant difference between groups after the evaluations.

Editorial: Geronto Meeting

The role of physical exercise in healthy aging

Physical exercise is an important non-pharmacological tool for good cognitive and physical performance in old age and, therefore, for achieving healthy aging. Scientific evidence indicates that multimodal training, especially involving resistance exercises associated with other modalities, benefits both robust and frail older adults. However, the progression of frequency (3x/week) and intensity (moderate-high) of the exercise should respect the initial condition of the older adults.
