Realisation, instantiation and individuation: some thoughts on identity in youth justice conferencing

This paper is concerned with identity and how it can be modelled in SFL, with special reference to the roles played by young offenders in Australia's youth justice conferences. These conferences function as a restorative justice alternative to courtroom-based retributive justice. It is proposed that a hierarchy of individuation be established, alongside and complementing realisation and instantiation, responsible for users of language, the ways in which semiotic resources are allocated to them, and the ways in which they use these resources to form social groups. This hierarchy is briefly explored in relation to teenage identity.

Systemic functional translation studies (sfts): the theory travelling in brazilian environments

This paper presents a mapping of the Systemic Functional Translation Studies (SFTS) tradition in the Brazilian environment, from its genesis up to developments in the 2000's. While studies during the earlier period are informed by the concept of "translation as (re)textualization", more recent SFTS research can be charted along the 'cline of instantiation', translations being investigated as "instantiations-in-contexts", cross-lingual functional varieties of language, or still as sources of SFL-based language description of Brazilian Portuguese. From late 90's on, computerized corpora and corpus-based methodologies have been integrated into Brazilian SFTS, for which annotation methods for the tagging of SFL categories have been developed. The paper ends with a consideration of Brazilian SFTS against the background of international SFTS as disseminated in the 2nd HCLS.

Evaluative patterns in the official discourse of human rights in Chile: giving value to the past and building historical memories in society

This paper analyzes certain patterns of voice realization of the Chilean National Truth and Reconciliation Commission of 1991, established after the end of the military dictatorship (1973-1990). In this official document, produced and promoted by the Chilean Government, the authors strive to present themselves as powerless to judge society or to explain historical events. However, they propose evaluations (evoked and inscribed) of relevant sectors of society, offer an interpretation of history, and specifically, give explanation for the "military intervention" and the possible causes for the severe human rights violations during the dictatorship. Informed by the complementary theoretical approaches of SFL and CDA, I focus on Appraisal analysis (White 2000, 2003; Martin 1997, 2003, 2004; Martin & Rose 2003; Martin & White 2005) and a transitivity analysis of mental and verbal projections in the discourse, as tools for a more flexible and detailed exploration of the use of evaluation resources. This analysis allows us to create a systemic network of the patterns of grammatical and lexical resources used by the Commission to generate mitigation and self/others representation in the discourse. This linguistic analysis, inserted in a social practice, also offers a complementary understanding of the subjectivities found in the field of oral history, specifically in the study of testimonies that account for different and contradictory memories of the recent Chilean past (Stern 2006).
