In order to make a detailed observation of some variables in reading performance, two third grade (second series in Brazil) children were selected from a group because their performance differed widely in terms of frequency and type of silent pauses and reading aloud rate. The group was formed by 32 children from 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. And, from an acoustic phonetic analysis of data, we were able to measure the reading aloud rate expressed in VV units per second, as well as observing performance and prosody such as: absolute frequency, duration and type of hesitant and non-hesitant silent pauses; stress group average duration; absolute frequency and duration of VV units per stress group; duration of units comprising the first vowel coming before a silent pause and the same. Statistical analysis suggests that the variable silent pause duration does not seem to differ among the children. However, some aspects like number of VV units per stress group, reading aloud rate, frequency and type of hesitant silent pauses vary a lot and may be important as parameters for reading performance.

Nos últimos anos, narrativas de aprendizagem de línguas têm revelado alguns aspectos do processo de aquisição de língua estrangeira que nem a observação comum ou a pesquisa êmica tem sido capaz de demonstrar. Isso porque os múltiplos aspectos do sistema de aprendizagem de línguas não são apreendidos exclusivamente por técnicas de observação, sobretudo aquelas que se limitam a investigar a concepção que os aprendizes têm acerca do processo do qual eles fazem parte. Narrativas de aprendizagem de línguas têm muito a dizer sobre os sentimentos, desejos e pontos de vista dos aprendizes, além do que, essas narrativas expressam informações que são, de certo modo, parecidas com as experiências de aprendizes de línguas do mundo todo. A importância das narrativas de aprendizagem de línguas para a Pesquisa em Aquisição de Segunda Língua motivou-me a compreendê-las como um gênero com traços discursivos típicos e, ao mesmo tempo, distintos, quando comparadas às narrativas investigadas por Labov (1972). Este artigo, pois, pretende analisar as narrativas de aprendizagem de línguas a partir de uma perspectiva de gêneros do discurso, usando, para tal, a teoria de gênero da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional, com o objetivo de explicar os estágios funcionais que frequentemente aparecem nas narrativas estudadas. Os dados são compostos por trinta e sete transcrições de narrativas de aprendizagem de línguas de brasileiros disponíveis na homepage do Projeto AMFALE. Seguindo a posição de Halliday & Hasan (1985) de que todo contexto está no texto, esta pesquisa em andamento adota a abordagem textual de Martin & Rose (2003) para categorizar e, de igual modo, descrever as narrativas de aprendizagem de línguas como um gênero do discurso específico. Os resultados mostraram que uma característica explícita desse gênero, presente na maioria dos dados analisados, é uma diferença discursiva na conclusão, ou Coda, das narrativas observadas, em relação à categorização laboviana.

Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir os resultados de uma análise de um texto produzido por uma professora de pós-graduação sobre o seu trabalho, em situação de orientação por esta pesquisadora. O texto analisado é um recorte dos dados de uma pesquisa de doutorando em andamento. Os pressupostos teórico-metodológicos que utilizamos é o Interacionismo Sociodiscursivo, a Ergonomia da Atividade e a Clínica de Atividade que desenvolvem pesquisas sobre o trabalho. O recorte do texto a ser discutido tem como tema a atividade de elaboração de parecer, e revela o que é preciso fazer para a realização da tarefa, algumas dimensões que a envolvem, além de dificuldades e conflitos.

O presente artigo propõe uma investigação das relações de interface entre o componente linguístico - prosódico - e o componente musical na palavra cantada. Tomando como objeto a canção Gabriela, de Tom Jobim, investigamos as relações que se estabelecem entre a hierarquia prosódica (Nespor & Vogel, 1986) e a hierarquia melódica (Carmo Jr 2007). Mostramos que no caso de incompatibilidade entre a estrutura prosódica e melódica, os processos fonológicos do português brasileiro de elisão, degeminação, ditongação e retração acentual podem violar seus domínios prosódicos de aplicação, mas ainda assim são organizados de acordo com os domínios melódicos.

Partindo de diretrizes teórico-metodológicas da Historiografia Linguística (como a relação entre clima de opinião e produção linguística), o artigo reconstrói e interpreta abordagens da variação linguística, percebida e comentada por Fernão de Oliveira, na primeira gramática da língua portuguesa (1536). Em busca da construção de uma identidade linguística, o pioneiro gramático procurou nas particularidades do idioma bases para afirmação e elevação do caráter nacional do povo português. Procura-se, a partir desse estudo de caso, situar o trabalho de Oliveira numa tradição gramatical renascentista típica do século XVI.

O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar como a intensidade passional modula um processo jurídico-penal, imprimindo-lhe sentidos. Fundamenta-se teoricamente na semiótica francesa e na retórica antiga. Apresentamos inicialmente alguns exemplos de análise de intensidade passional do processo completo, sobretudo para mostrar os meios que definimos para reconhecê-la. A seguir, visualizamos num gráfico os graus de intensidade passional de cada peça processual e relacionamos a intensidade, o andamento e o ritmo como produtores de diferentes efeitos de sentido, que passamos a comentar. Essa relação nos permite uma nova abordagem e compreensão tanto da argumentação jurídica como do fenômeno jurídico em nossa sociedade.

O principal objetivo deste artigo é responder aos comentários e críticas feitos por Petersen, no artigo A tripartição pronominal e o estatuto das proformas Ce, Ocê e Você, publicado nesta Revista, às nossas análises apresentadas em Vitral (1996) e Ramos (1997) que tomam a forma cê como um clítico e como uma das etapas de um processo de gramaticalização que teve como fonte a expressão Vossa Mercê.

The goal of our study is to identify several conceptualizations of the body expressed in the contexts of psychopathology and literature. We propose a specific categorization of literary sentences drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980; 1999) and Context-Limited Simulation Theory (Ritchie 2003; 200; 2008). Based on corpus data, we show that in psychiatric manuals the physical body is always reasoned in metaphoric terms of the BODY - CONTAINER category, thus with a high degree of non-specific attributes. In psychoanalysis manuals, the body is represented by "sexual-sensual sentences" or by abstract "notions". Italian poetry offers an additional representation of the body with special focus on the organs and other body parts like "heart," hand(s)", "face", but also "blood", "chest", "arm(s)," "eye(s)","breast(s)", "head," "flesh," "skin".

This article gives special attention to how the understanding of some conceptual metaphors which are found in languages typologically different can contribute to the process of teaching and learning vocabulary. Our central issue is that man's philogenetical and ontogenetical history play an important role in the generation of the concepts. If it is possible to explain cross-linguistic commonalities between typologically unrelated languages based on conceptual metaphors, then learners are stimulated to gain knowledge about how language systems are organised. The main benefit of such focused instruction is that it can raise learner's awareness of the explicit knowledge that is being consciously constructed and eventually transferred to different languages encouraging him to reach a higher level of performance.

Contemporary theories of metaphor often give the body a foundational status, by claiming that it provides the universal ground upon which imagination engenders figurative thought. This paper goes against this idea, discussing the relationship between the body and metaphor from a non foundationalist point of view. Taking a Wittgensteinean stance on metaphor and on the body, it aims to provide elements to rethink the issue, exploring in particular the path open by the Austrian philosopher in his critique of traditional mental/ physical, inner/outer dichotomies.

The aim of this paper is to reflect on the character of embodiment in the framework of Cognitive Linguistics based on Lakoff, collaborators and interlocutors. Initially I characterize the embodied mind, via cognitive experientialism. In these terms, the theory shapes how human beings build and process knowledge structures which regulate their individual and collective lives. Next, the Neural Theory of Language in which embodiment is rebuilt from a five level paradigm, where structured connectionism carries on the very burden of computational description and explanation is discussed. From these assumption, classical problems about computational implementations for models of natural language functioning as reductionist-physicalist approaches, I then conclude by assuming that embodiment, as an investigation phenomenon, shouldn't be formulated in terms of levels, being treated as interfaces instead, at such manner that: (a) the epistemological commitments should be synchronically sustained in all interfaces of the investigation paradigm; (b) the conventional computational level should be taken as one of the problems which has to be treated in the structured connectionism plan; (c) the strategic reduction levels paradigm and the results obtained from it might imply a kind of modularization of the program of research itself; e (d) the modules would be interdependent only as a result of the reductionist proposal. As a result, I assume that it is possible to do Cognitive Linguistics without adhering to structured connectionism, or to neurocomputacional simulation, as long as one would operate with interfaces constructions between domains of investigation and not with a reductionist features paradigm treated in terms of "levels".

It is argued that the notion of corporeality that is so much present in discussions about mind, language and the way metaphor functions in real life is best understood as first and foremost having to do with corpo-reality rather than corporeal-ity. This is a far more revolutionary idea than often seen to be and calls for a thorough revision of many of our well-entrenched dogmas. Not surprisingly, rearguard maneuvers designed to blunt its thrust are all too common in metaphor studies.
