Relação entre o sistema imune e o comportamento em zebrafish

The interaction between immune system and behavior has already been observed in several studies using mammals as animal model. On the other hand, this relationship has not yet been clearly demonstrated in other animal species including fish. Thus, the main objective of this work is to evaluate the relationship between immune system and zebrafish behavior. To achieve our goals, we already carried out three fundamental studies that will be central to this Doctoral Thesis. In the first study, we separated fish according to their social and exploratory behavior and evaluated the expression of cytokines genes in the brain. So we verify that the immunological status varies according to the exploratory and social profile of the fish. Although we showed that there is a relationship between immune system and zebrafish behavior, a major question remains open: is the immune system that leads to behavioral pattern changes or is it the behavioral pattern that alters the immune response? To answer this question, in our second study, we induced an inflammatory response in a group of fish and reevaluated the exploratory and social behavior as well as the expression of cytokine genes in the brain. Sick fish had increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the brain and decreased locomotion, social preference and exploration to a new object when compared to the control group. With this study we demonstrated that the immune system changes the behavior, and we first characterized the sickness behavior in the zebrafish. Finally, in the third study we evaluated the effects of acute and chronic stress on the expression of cytokines and neuronal markers in the zebrafish brain, noting that chronic stress causes significant changes in these genes, whereas a single episode of stress did not cause changes. Thus we demonstrate that a behavioral pattern, such as stress, causes changes in the immune response. Therefore, we conclude that immune system and behavior are interconnected, and one can alter the other.

Concreto protegido com pintura intumescente em altas temperaturas: avaliação de propriedades mecânicas

The concrete subjected to action of high temperatures suffers degradation of its mechanical properties like compressive strength and modolus of elasticity. Passive protection materials can be used as a way to minimize these deleterious effects of exposing concrete to high temperatures, because delayed the transfer of heat from the outside to the protected element. Passive protection materials can be used in revitalization works or with project errors, specifically when concrete coverage is insufficient. This study proposes as a technological alternative for these cases the use of fire intumescent coating as a passive protection material, already established in steel structures. The fire intumescent coating in high temperatures generates chemical reactions that originate a carbonized foam of high insulating performance. Therefore, in order to investigate the efficiency of this coating on concrete structures, this research evaluated the mechanical behavior of conventional strength concrete, in this case, 38,5 MPa, on high temperatures (300ºC, 500ºC e 700ºC) with fire intumescent coating, through compressive strength, modolus of elasticity and loss of mass after heating. Through the results obtained statistically in the research, it was concluded that the fire intumescent coating has a good performance like passive protection materials when applied on conventional strenght concrete. The thickness of fire intumescent coating also is a significant and greater thickness has best performance.

Transformando fósseis em palavras: revitalização da exposição paleontológica do museu paleontológico e arqueológico professor Walter Ilha, São Pedro do Sul, RS

The present work addresses the inclusion and accessibility of people with visual or hearing disabilities in paleontology museum spaces, in order to provide access to scientific culture. The 2010 Demographic Census shows that 23.9% of the Brazilian population has some type of disability, and of this percentage, few attend scientific cultural spaces, because they do not know how the service and access will be. Thus, the aim is to adapt and reorganize the paleontological exhibition room at the Professor Walter Ilha Paleontological and Archaeological Museum, in the municipality of São Pedro do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. For this, the methodology consists on the application of assistive technology (audio description and translation in Libras) accessed via QR Code, labels and information panels in enlarged font, 3D printed Braille labels. This work is important, because the number of museums with paleontological exhibitions, which are accessible and included, is reduced. This proposal will contribute to the protection and dissemination of the local paleontological heritage, in addition to human and cultural heritage valorization.

Escola de Artes e Ofícios da COOPFER: estilos e influências presentes na produção moveleira

The city of Santa Maria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, was the largest railway junction in the south of Brazil, and this propitiate the foundation of the Cooperativa de Consumo dos Empregados da VFRGS (VFRGS worker’s consumption cooperative known as COOPFER), which became the largest consumer cooperative in Latin America. This cooperative had among its objectives, the professional education of the children of its associated, that materialized at the Escola de Artes e Ofícios (School of Arts and Crafts). This Study aims to identify the styles and influences present in the furniture production of COOPFER School of Arts and Crafts, using as methodology a qualitative applied research that uses bibliographical and documental research, which sought material in public and private collection, as well as interviews with subjects who experienced the universe of the Escola de Artes e Ofícios or that own furniture manufactured there. This research allowed the elaboration of a photographic and descriptive book of the furniture produced in this institution, preserving, thus, this important Cultural Heritage of the city of Santa Maria.
