Images of Gender Violence in Brazilian Soap Operas

This article investigates the portrayal of the violence perpetrated against the villains of Brazilian soap operas by their parents, husbands and lovers. The main question is about whether the scenes in which these women are assaulted are inserted in a context in which such violence is stated and questioned, or if they appear devoid of any inquiry about the depiction of a man beating a woman. Nine soap operas were selected for analysis: all were exhibited between the years of 2000 to 2017 and were presented in prime time (21 o’clock). At the end of the course, the investigation demonstrates a regime of representation that denies the gender violence inherent in these images and their possible consequences.

Education meets Art: Political-Pedagogical notes on Rights and Early Childhood Education

In order to problematize the tendency of imposing in preschools (and very often in day care centers) a pedagogy based on the school logic, rooted in the sciences of regularity, focused on the analytical teaching, centered on the teacher and knowledge transmission, we propose an interlocution between art, education and the very earliest childhood. The encounter between art and childhood fosters the discussion about the gaps in the teacher’s formation, who is always among young children, mainly the tiny young ones, to educate them way beyond their prevailing cognitivism. From philosophers and thinkers interested in life and its unfoldings, we approach the poetic imagination, the joy and the complexity of learning, the right to beauty and the language experience that emerges from the sensitive body to raise the political urgency for another Childhood Pedagogy. The experience of the sensitive and linguistical body in its first learning summons a pedagogy which does not segregate experience from knowledge, body from mind, thought from action in the world. This inseparability allows one not only to resist the exclusively scientific bases of Pedagogy and its structural technicality – the didactics –  but also to assess the relevancy of art in the teaching formation and its power to agglutinate poetic, political and pedagogical meetings that guarantee full rights to childhood and education.

Uti Possidetis Juris and the Role of the Colonial Law for the Resolution of International Territorial Disputes

The present essay discusses the condition of colonial law in the international territorial disputes decided by the International Court of Justice. In particular, the article verifies that condition in cases where the uti possidetis juris principle is invoked to aid in the determination of territorial limits and frontiers. If, on the one hand, the Court’s traditional case law tends to treat the domestic law of States as a “mere fact”, on the other, the particular cases of uti possidetis require certain exercises by the International Court that appear to refrain from such treatment. Through an examination of the case law and cases in which the principle is invoked, as well as of the techniques used by the Court to determine and interpret colonial law, this article demonstrates that the traditional approach of the Court is mitigated when colonial law appears in the context of the international litigation.

Plínio Salgado. O nascimento da um Movimento

This article is a part of the dissertation (Master’s Degree) entitled “O Integralismo e o Teuto-Brasileiro em Santa Catarina: Joinvile 1930-1938”. The aim of this article is to discuss the formation of the Ação Integralista Brasileira (A.I.B) and the biography of Plinio Salgado, the founder of this movement. It is necessary to show the spread of the movement ideas in Brazil in order to undestand the appeal to its political-ideological thought amid the German-Brazilians population in the state of Santa Catrina, in 1930’s.

The STS perspective and the development of pedagogical proposals in the context of science education

The present research consists in a literature review of scientific production on didactic proposals related to the STS approach in Science Education journals. The methodology involved two different stages. Firstly, the papers that approached the topic were mapped and a quantitative study, which comprised the study time frame. Secondly, a qualitative analysis of the selected articles was conducted, prioritizing a discussion that aimed to identify how the authors, who belong to the research community in Science Education, are appropriating the theoretical references based on the STS approach in order to develop their proposals in the school context. It was possible to identify the heterogeneity of appropriation forms in the design of the pedagogical proposals related to STS approach. We emphasize that it is necessary to advance in the discussion of social aspects that involve science and that this discussion must go beyond the school context, inserting the local community and its surroundings in order to promote socio-political actions.

From Exclusion to Controlled Inclusion: blacks and women in Brazilian diplomacy

Intelligence, sophistication, keen taste (refined taste), mastery of several languages, established knowledge of art, culture and the use of label rules of etiquette. These aspects, in a naturalized way, compose the diplomatic habitus. The Brazilian diplomacy remained for a long time faithful to the norms and spaces that consecrated and distinguished it from the rest of Brazilian society, so that until the redemocratization Itamaraty was the reflection of its elite, this includes the expressive majority of white men. It was only in the second half of the 1990s that more effective measures were taken to diversify career staff. Considering the historical construction of the field, the diplomatic habitus and the measures adopted in the last decades, it´s intended to investigate the forms of exclusion and inclusion of minorities, especially women and black people. The research on this social space is fundamental to the extent that the production about this field and its agents is very scarce. For the analysis were used quantitative and qualitative methods: survey, interviews, memoirs, biographies, database with geographic origin and school education, annuals and notices of concourse.

Elie Luzac and L’homme plus que machine (1748): The Dialogic Voice of an Enlightenment Printer

Early into his career as one of the most successful printerpublishers of the Dutch Republic, Elie Luzac (1721-1796) played a pivotal role in disseminating the materialist ideas of La Mettrie’s Homme machine (1747). This paper focuses on the dialogic voice (Bakhtine) in a publication by Luzac himself, which oscillates between asserting and refuting La Mettrie’s views. Descended from Huguenot refugees, Luzac condemns what he publishes and publishes what he condemns. This discursive ambiguity emerges in Luzac’s L’homme plus que machine (1748), a work which cites La Mettrie’s theses in order to contest them. Building on the succès de scandale of the English version of L’homme machine (Man a Machine, 1749), the English translation of L’homme plus que machine, Man more than a Machine, appeared in 1752. The present contribution examines how the translator’s Voice, which is defined as an enarrative voice, effaces the concealed claims of the original text and replaces them with a discourse whose explicit anti-materialist tenor contrasts with the vehement rhetoric of Man a Machine.

First record of the straight-billed reedhaunter (Limnoctites rectirostris Gould, 1839) for the state of Paraná, Brazil

The straight-billed reedhaunter inhabits marshes that contain eryngos (Eryngium spp.) and is distributed from Uruguay to Brazil, where it was thought to be restricted to the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. In this study, we report the first record of the species for Paraná State, in the city of Palmas, increasing the known distribution of the species and the state’s list of birds. We also highlight the importance of studies to the conservation of the species in the state.

STS relations in science textbooks: an analysis of the researches carried out in the period from 2010 to 2017

This work aims to identify and analyze studies that investigated the insertion of science-technology-society relations in didactic books in the area of sciences, regarding their characteristics, contributions and limitations for teaching with a CTS focus. A bibliographic research was carried out, with a qualitative methodological approach. The studies were located at the portal of Capes Journal  and in the Capes Thesis and Dissertations Bank considering the period from 2010 to 2017. The main results indicated that, although there are initiatives to insert the social dimensions of science and technology in the textbooks, the space reserved for such discussions is not very expressive, both in the Brazilian textbooks and in the textbooks of other countries. The importance of criticality regarding the selection and use of didactic works is reiterated and it is understood that teacher training can collaborate with critical-reflexive spaces that contemplate debates about the textbook and its use in the classroom.

Economic cooperation versus social competitiveness

The strategies of economic cooperation, found since primitive societies, indicate that the dominance of the logic of ‘competition‘ is an important distortion promoted by the capitalist mode of production and the experience that separated the worker from work, dehumanizing social and political relations. Cooperation and competition interact and complement each other in ways that are capable of potentializing human development as long as they do so from the premises of solidarity economics. This interaction effectively aggregates value to the economic process. The principal cooperative strategy is in the logic of the theories that are at the foundation of the economic agglomerates and arrangements. The social-cultural construction capable of making this option a hegemonic construction is now articulated around solidarity economics.
