The reasons why Wanda Tinasky not be Thomas Pynchon: a case study (I)
This paper reports a practical experience in which I use some Neolo software function to analyze three groups of texts: 1. Non-fictional writings by Thomas Pynchon; 2. The letters of Wanda Tinasky; and, 3. the Letters that were published in reaction to Wanda's ideas in the same newspaper. The goal is to show that it is possible to prove that Pynchon did not write Wanda's letters as some specialists in the work of the fictionist believed. Professor Donald Foster has already proven this by following a traditional, historical investigation. In this paper, I will demonstrate how the distinction can be made from computational analysis and attends to quantitative, qualitative methods and allied to some historical data to strengthen the proposal. A final goal I aim at with this work is to demonstrate that it takes no bold and complex formulas to do the job of distinguishing authors' style.

Passive (Re)translations and identity struggles in the poetry of Leonard Cohen. A Comparison of three translations of book of Longing (2006)
Over the course of less than a decade, Leonard Cohen’s Book of Longing (2006), was translated into French three different times. The poetry collection of Cohen was first translated in Québec (Livre du constant désir, 2007) and then in France (Le livre du désir, 2008). In addition, seven poems published in Book of Longing previously appeared as songs on the studio album Ten New Songs (2001). The French release of this album was accompanied by a promotional booklet, in which French translations (made by Graeme Allwright) are printed. In this article, the question is raised whether these texts can be labeled as ‘retranslations’ or not. The three translations will first be compared in order to determine to what extent several power mechanisms have influenced the production of these translations, namely the dynamics between centre and periphery (Paris and Québec) and between highbrow-lowbrow cultural products (literature and music). These external factors will then be compared to a number of internal factors, i.e. a specific interpretation of Cohen’s poetry that may have influenced the adopted translation strategies of the three texts under consideration.
The colonial reverberations of livraria do Globo translations in 1930s Brazil
This paper investigates early postcolonial Brazil through the lens of one of its most prominent publishers, Livraria do Globo, seeking to define the links between literary translation and supposedly receding colonial power. In an analysis of nine English-language translations by this publisher in the 1930s, what at first made little sense in terms of coherent translation policy actually evinced a still powerful colonial influence. France, Portugal and England seemed to struggle within the pages of these books, while Brazilian nationalism and the systematization of Brazilian Portuguese simultaneously unfolded.

Karate-do as an instrument for training the character and personality of practitioners through their body techniques
This research aims to investigate, with instructors of karate-do, the understanding about the relationship between corporal techniques developed in this martial art and the formation of character of the practitioner, a relation that according to the authors of the area is direct and unavoidable. As an instrument of data collection, interviews with all instructors working in this martial art in the Santarém-PA city. As a result, for example, 38% of professors demonstrated that they were directly and objectively trained in character and personality, without considering that the techniques themselves are instruments of formation of this character, another 54% could do so, while 8% of respondents have shown that they do so only with the children, and it is concluded that the instructors methodologically still do not demonstrate cohesion of work, and some of them still need to be more closely aligned with the authors of the area.

Who is Shar in NW and its Portuguese translations? A study of character representation based on attitudinal values
This paper draws on the Martinian interpretation of Systemic Functional Grammar (MARTIN 1992, MARTIN; ROSE 2007) to approach translation as interlingual reinstantiation (SOUZA, 2010), from an interpersonal stance. The goal of this investigation is to examine the representation of a character of the novel in the original text and its translations to cast light on the implications of semantic variation for reader positioning. The analysis is based on the Appraisal system (MARTIN; WHITE 2005) and the text chosen for this investigation is an excerpt of a chapter of British contemporary novel NW by Zadie Smith (2012), along with its Brazilian and Portuguese translations. The analysis shows greater and lesser variations, most of loading or polarity, in attitudes associated with the character.

Leaf colonization by aquatic invertebrates in a tropical stream: are there differences between native species and Eucalyptus grandis (Hill ex Maiden) in the rainy and dry seasons?
The objective of the present study was to verify if there are differences in the colonization of invertebrates between the leaves of native and exotic species in the rainy and dry seasons. Senescent leaves were collected from a riparian forest along a stream and dried in a greenhouse at 60±5°C for 48 h. After drying, the plant material was added to litter bags randomly arranged in the stream. Two experimental treatments were used: (1) Eucalyptus grandis (non-native) and Lithraea molleoides (native species); and (2) Eucalyptus grandis (non-native) and Maytenus aquifolium (native species). The results showed that colonization mainly began on the 14th day and continued until the 28th day. Greater invertebrate abundances were found on the native leaves in the dry season and on the non-native leaves in the rainy season. Regarding taxonomic richness, the highest values were found starting on day 21 and there was a difference in the rainy season between native and non-native species, which did not occur in the dry season. According to a statistical analysis, in the rainy season the abundance of invertebrates was higher for the non-native species compared to the native species. On the other hand, there was a negative effect of the rainy season on richness. For both experiments, the main effect of the days did not influence the richness. There was an interaction effect between time of year and days of observation; in the rainy season, it is expected that there will be a significant linear increase in abundance over the days.

Social self-organization in the field of work and production: notes for a critique of the solidarity economy
The contemporary debate on alternative experiences of work organization and production isin Brazil dominated by the so-called “solidarity economy”. Also known as “cooperatives” or“recovered factories and enterprises”, many of these experiences are evidently not new, goingback to the first practices of resistance and social self-organization carried out by the workingclass. At the same time, their condition and potential as a societal “alternative” in a varietyof circumstances are minimized and even challenged by the way in which they fall withinthe framework of relations of subordination and dependence on agencies, mechanisms andactors of the state and the capitalist market. The article in question aims to present a briefcritical review of the theoretical repertoire mobilized by exponents of the solidarity economyin the perspectives from the anarchist and heterodox marxist, relating it to the proposal of the“participatory economy” (PARECON). Thus, it is hoped to contribute with a critique of thistheoretical framework through the recovery of the antisystemic sense of the concept of self-management, subsidizing the reflection and analysis related to such experiences.

Postcolonialism and translation: an analysis of the novel Half a Life and its translation to Portuguese
The publication of translations of postcolonial literary works is increasingly gaining space in the Brazilian publishing market. In this article, the articulation between Translation Studies and Postcolonial Studies is sought through the analysis of the post-colonial novel Half a Life, by V.S. Naipaul, and its translation to Brazilian Portuguese, entitled Meia Vida. Discussions of ideological aspects in the translation of postcolonial texts and the very choice of what is translated and by whom are questions raised by the text, as well as the challenges of translating postcolonial literary texts. Finally, it is discussed how the postcolonial discourse of the original work is transmitted through translation, ascertaining possible suppression or maintenance of the postcolonial tone of the original work in the translated work.

Soccer and migration: the perspective of brazilian coaches at the exterior
The migratory flow in sports is defined as the entry / exit movement of athletes between countries. Causes and consequences are changeable and defined according to global characteristics. Although their importance in sports, coaches do not carry the same weight in this process. The objective of this study was to understand the coaches view on the migratory flow in soccer. This is an observational qualitative study. Semistructured interviews about migratory flow questions were conducted with 2 Brazilian coaches of international experience. For analysis of the data, we support the Content Analysis proposed by Bardin. We conclude that the coaches view on the migratory flow in Brazilian soccer has different aspects of the athletes. The motivations were the professional challenge and new opportunities. Socio-cultural aspects were the main difficulties. In addition, a possible political segregation, lack of expressive results and absence of specific licenses close international doors for Brazilian coaches.

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology: a literature review around the contributions and challenges in Physics Education
Nanotechnology was recognized as an area in science less than a century ago. The research and technological advances in this area, however, have been great, representing, today, one of the major themes of interest in the world and contributing, significantly, to scientific progress in various areas of knowledge. In this context, it is important to develop a wide sight on the main foci brought by scientific papers that shed some light on the theme: the teaching of “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology” in Brazil. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to conduct a literature review, analyzing the main contributions and challenges regarding to the theme “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology” in Physics education. To this end, we analyzed works published between 2008 and 2017 in the three most important national events in the area of Physics education, namely: the National Symposium of Physics Education (SNEF), Meeting on Physics Education Research (EPEF), National Meeting on Research and Science Education (ENPEC). The analysis of these articles shows a scenario in development, but still inadequate regarding to the teaching of the topic at both the basic and the superior levels. The articles point mainly to the curricula being outdated, a lack of support for teachers, and a lack of quality teaching materials that touch on the social, ethical, political and economic issues inherent to the theme. In the last few years, however, this scenario has started to change. More and more research and materials are being developed, making the approach to the theme in the classroom more effective and accessible for the teachers.

Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe: The Reception of Retranslations and how readers choose.
One of the paradoxes of the digital age is that it has fostered small, independent enterprises alongside corporate multinationals, a trend reflected in publishing where international players co-exist on the web alongside small, independent publishers often keen to commission retranslations as ‘safe bets’. Due to customers’ ease of access over the Internet and sellers’ low costs, book sales increasingly correspond to the ‘long tail’ statistical model whereby high numbers of relatively few bestsellers are sold, with the graph ‘tailing off’ sharply to a high number of items selling few copies. Many retranslations are often available simultaneously and, as sales are spread among them, will tend to be distributed along this tail. As online book sales increase, whether as hard copies or in digital format, when it comes to buying a translated text, customers often find themselves confronted with a choice between several different editions. This paper investigates some of the influences affecting choice, using Italian retranslations of Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and English retranslations of Machiavelli’s The Prince as examples. Reference will be made to the shift from professional review writing to online customer appraisals and star-ratings, the presence of retranslations on bestseller lists as well as to the importance of paratextual elements such as book covers.
Sports policy of university in a public higher education institution in Mato Grosso do Sul
The present paper aims to evaluate a sport policy of a public university of Mato Grosso do Sul through quali-quantitative, longitudinal, retrospective, descriptive-exploratory and documentary research. Documents and scholarships notice’s were evaluated. Only one project was developed between 2013 and 2016, wich attended 237 people weekly. It offered 15 modalities, conducted by academics from 12 diferents courses. The paper concludes that the appraised university shows contradistinctions in its developed sport policy, despite of having a specific coordination and a wide list of sports practices, its proposal is limited in attendance schedule and shows issues with the class regency responsible's.

Reflections about the production of research based in oral history in higher stroke newspaper in the Physical Education area
Discussing papers based on this methodology and published in scientific journals specific of Physical Education, we observed that the forms used to analyze the oral sources were constituted in a differentiated way in relation to what we are accustomed to find in texts of other areas, mainly about the conceptual treatment of memory and identity. In order to understand these differences beyond a brief initial finding, we set the following guiding question: how Oral History methodology has been used in scientific papers published in journals of area 21 (Physical Education) in Brazil? We conclude that the way of doing research in Oral History in Physical Education keeps its peculiarities and these should impact on our own production.

Jean-Paul Sartre's theatre after communism: Perpetuating the past through non-retranslation?
This paper deals with the phenomenon of non-retranslation in post-Soviet Russia, and the related practice of reprinting manipulated Soviet translations today. We will illustrate this phenomenon with Jean-Paul Sartre’s theatre translation in Russia. The stakes and mechanisms behind the reprinting of Sartre’s Soviet translations in the post-Soviet era will be explored through the frameworks of retranslation theory. We will also reflect on the possible impact of reprinting Sartre’s Soviet theatre translations today. Considering reprinting as an instance of non-retranslation, this paper will draw more attention to the practice of reprinting and how it relates to retranslation. The reasons for non-retranslation will, in part, be ascribed to the presence of a double normativity in Russia; characterized on the one hand by a dominant economic norm driving the field of literature after 1991, and on the other by a continued ideological (communist) norm. This uncovers how, a quarter of a century after its abolition, communist censorship continues to shape the reading of contemporary Russian readers, and thus puts to question the general assumption that communist censorship disappeared along with the USSR.

Language games in peasant education: everyday life and mathematics in the view of peasant teachers
The contextualization from the everyday life is defended by documents and theoretical references of Mathematics Education and associated to the principles of Peasant Education, considering that it offers meaning and allows to value the reality of the students. However, the second philosophy of Wittgenstein indicates that different realities are languages games that have at the most similarities and not an immediate relation. In this sense, this research sought to understand the relationships that mahematics teachers of a Rural school make between the realities of formal and everyday mathematics. Teachers highlight problems in their formations, both in relation to content and in discussions about contextualization, which appears more as a discourse. But beyond the discourse it is possible to perceive in teachers’ statements that by they understand that some contents are difficulty to contextualize, but they should not be deprecated.

The criminal justice system and domestic violence against children and adolescents: a sociological study
Domestic violence again children and adolescents currently constitutes an important issue for discussion by social movements and civil society. Recognized in recent decades as a social problem in Brazil, it is one of the components of the debates about the exercise of justice in Brazil. This article seeks to discuss the existing relationship between the social conflicts involving childhood and adolescence and the judicial system through an analysis of how this problem is treated by the criminal courts in Santa Maria, a municipality of 266 thousand people, 300 kilometers from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul State. To do so, it examined how these social conflicts are handled by the formal mechanisms of social control and the procedures adopted by legal authorities in response to the legal conflicts and the types of sentences attributed to these criminal court actions. The study sought to understand the prevailing elements in the decisions, based on a characterization of the population that accesses this system.

New trends in international investment law treaty practice: where does Latin America stand?
Latin-American countries’ attitude towards international investment law hasundergone an evolution. During the 90s, those countries stipulated many BilateralInvestment Treaties (BITs), subscribed to the Washington Convention, and, recently, they have been up front in the process of reconsideration regarging the legalsystem revolving around the BITs. Their recent negotiating practices represent goodexamples of a new generation of investment treaties. In particular, a glance at the mainclauses of the MERCOSUR Protocol will reveal the member States’ intent to severelylimit the extent of the treatment and the protection to be granted to foreign investors.

The notion of institutional didactic obstacles
Research on challenges in learning Mathematics demonstrates a variety of classifications, such as ontogenetic, didactic and epistemological, which have been highlighted by Brousseau. In addition, contributions from other researchers include emotional and linguistic challenges. In this light, we aim to characterize the Institutional Didactic Challenge based on elements that make up the institutional epistemologies present in the teaching of Mathematics, with a focus on fraction, to students of the first and second segments of elementary education. To achieve this goal, a qualitative bibliographic research was undertaken. The results of the research have confirmed a difference in the approach of teaching fraction between the two segments. This is referred to as institutional epistemology, which is presented as a didactic challenge in the learning of fraction among beginners of the second segment of elementary school. In conclusion, we propose didactic de-transposition as an alternative for addressing the challenges in the transition.
