Reflections on toponymic taxonomy: from the point of arrival to the point of departure

Traditionally, toponomastic studies have always been based on the theory created by Maria Vicentina do Amaral Dick proposed in the early 1990s and later expanded by Aparecida Negri Isquerdo in 1996. The taxonomy proposed by Dick (1992) considers the characteristics of the toponyms under analysis and categorizes them into toponymic taxes, these being subdivided into anthropocultural or physical motivations. However due to the complexity, dynamicity and singularity of naming a place, new methodologies for toponymic analysis in line with existing taxes should be considered, in order to broaden the reflections in the scope of toponomastic studies. In this perspective, this study proposes to reflect on the taxonomic approach to toponyms. For this purpose a clipping of the master's thesis "The comercial names of Naranjal-Paraguay" will be presented, in which Lucas (2019) studied the names of the commercial establishments of the Paraguayan city starting from toponymy taxonomy for other areas of language studies. The results obtained evidenced that the analysis of toponymic  taxonomies reconciled with other areas of linguistic studies allows the researcher to make reflections that transcend the field of toponymic motivations and contribute significantly to the history, culture and linguistic and cultural memory of the community investigated.

The effects of morphological awareness in amplifying the vocabulary of students learning English in an extension course

The aim of this research is to verify the relation between the explicit work with morphological awareness and vocabulary acquisition of teenager English learners as additional language. Researches as Jornlin (2015), Akbulut (2017) and Alsaeedi (2017), among others, show that morphological awareness has a fundamental role in learning English as an additional language. To reach the research objective, an intervention organized around original games and playful activities was implemented. The participants were teenagers enrolled in an extension course at the Additional Languages Center at the Federal University of Pampa. The intervention occurred in the first semester of 2019, during the period of ten weeks. The results, obtained through pre-tests and post-tests of morphological awareness and vocabulary, show that the students obtained gains in relation to morphological awareness and expanded their vocabulary knowledge. Therefore, the research suggests that the intervention played a significant role in the teaching-learning process of English as an additional language.

Name-giving motives in Lithuania and Brazil: a comparative view

TThis research aims at analysing and comparing the motives for choosing the first name of a child in Lithuania and Brazil in the years 1958-2016. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods and applying social and cultural approaches, it reveals that different countries and cultures have both similar and divergent trends in name-giving practices. The most remarkable similarity in both countries and cultures is both the predominance of an aesthetic motiveand the desire to honour a relative, a friend, or a famous person. These trends are presumably related to universal aspects of naming practices. The aesthetic motiveis related to processes of cultural globalization, while the honour-oriented motivepoints to the significance of traditional naming patterns. The greatest difference between Lithuanian and Brazilian data is in the frequency of name choices due to patriotism, religion, name uniqueness or naming a child after a fictional character. Such divergent results are explained by different social values in each society and different cultural and historical experiences. In addition, the research proves that the first names do have meaning; however, it is not purely conceptual or lexical, as they rather bear individual connotations.

Orthographic formation and stylization of social names of transgender people: issues of linguistic and gender identity

This work aims to investigate the trans people formation processes of social names, observing their relationship with the first names of these subjects. As secondary objectives, we intend to investigate whether orthographic stylization of renames occurs and whether the adopted names are usual in Brazilian Portuguese. The study has a qualitative and quantitative approach and it was carried out based on a corpus made up of 50 social names of transgenders who answered a questionnaire on the Google.doc platform. We found that, for the most part, transgender people prefer a social name without a morphological identity with the first name. Among the names with morphological identity, we observed that the most used name formation processes are: derivation, flexion and brachysemy. We also found that 82% of social names are customary in Brazilian Portuguese and, of these, 64% are dictionaryzed, 8% are dictionaryzed variants and 40% have stylized spelling by consonant duplication, insertion or exchange of graphemes. Regarding the identity aspects and the renaming, we found that transgender people mark in their social name a distance between the first and their new gender identity.

Onomastics and Law Interface: contributions to the studies of Brazilian anthroponomy

The purpose of this article is to present the characteristics of a group of anthroponyms in order to point out some directions for studies of Brazilian anthroponymy. This article is based on theoretical assumptions of Onomastics and on the interface between this field of study and Law. The anthroponyms analyzed are civil name, social name, ballot name and parliamentary name. Data were collected from the Superior Electoral Court, the Chamber of Deputies and court decisions from tribunals. Recent Brazilian anthroponymy studies demonstrate that research on personal names relating linguistic and legal aspects is still incipient. This article provides some suggestions that could bridge such a gap by analyzing lexical or grammatical aspects of data originating from legal norms or judicial decisions.

The humour of Brazilian northeastern’s anthroponomy

This article aims to analyze the functioning of Northeastern names as elements of humor in virtual texts. The corpus of analysis consists of two posts of northeastern humor profiles on social network Instagram: Suricate Seboso (greasy suricate) and Bode Gaiato (mocking goat). The analytical process considers Discourse Analysis theoretical premises and considers concepts such as discursive memory, as in Courtine (1999, 2014), Robin (2016) and Paveau (2005) and discursive ethos, as in Maingueneau (2008a, 2018, 2020). Since these notions are directly linked to anthroponomic onomastics regarding historical and social facts related to language, I also consider the work by Leite de Vasconcelos (1928) as organized in Carvalhinhos (2007). The conclusions point to a functioning of the Northeastern names in this type of discourse as elements of humor linked to different memories, which present a shift in the naming processes, for example by updating patronymics.

Placenames of indigenous origin in Acre-Brazil: fauna, flora and hidrography in geographic features

Toponymy, a discipline that studies place names, is one of the branches of Onomastics: science responsible for the study of proper names. This study aims to trace a profile of toponyms of indigenous origin in the rural area of Acre, analyzing toponymic motivations related to fauna, flora and hydrography in Acrean geographic features.  This corpus – collected in the maps provided by IBGE, with a scale of 1: 250,000 and 1:1,000,000 – was based on the theoretical-methodological proposal by Dick (1990, 1992), especially regarding the taxonomic model, composed of 27 taxa, subdivided into physical and cultural categories, and as to the catalogue and storage of toponymic database (DICK, 2004). The results revealed that, out of 392 toponyms, 74% are names linked to physical and geographic characteristics, 20% concerning cultural factors and 6% were unclassified. The research showed that toponymic motivation is mainly based on flora, fauna and hydrography predominantly from Tupi language origin.

Indianist anthroponymy in Alencar's corpus: an etymological, fictional, and contextual analysis

Drawing from the perspective of Contextual Fictional Etymology, in this paper we analyze four Indianist anthroponyms, namely, Irapuã, Coatiabo, Maranguab and Abaeté, found in the works O Guarani, Iracema and Ubirajara by José de Alencar. For this purpose, we draw from the theoretical framework of Onomastics (DICK, 1999), Contextual Fictional Etymology (AUTOR, 2018), Lexicology (BIDERMAN, 2001; VILELA, 1995) and Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, 2009; AUTOR, 2014). To extract the Indianist anthroponyms, we used the WordSmith Tools software (SCOTT, 2012) and some resources of the Genre/Historical version of Corpus do Português (DAVIES, 2006). We considered as Alencar’s anthroponymic etymons the indigenous names created by the author in his works. Towards this end, two criteria were considered: first, the words should not be part of exclusion dictionaries, which publication predates Alencar's works; second, the words should appear in the Corpus do Português (DAVIES, 2006) as having its first occurrence in texts written by Alencar. The creation of anthroponymic etymons by Alencar enabled him to attribute to the indigenous characters not only a name, but also the physical and/or psychological features intended by the author. Therefore, from the perspective of Contextual Fictional Etymology, the study of Alencar’s anthroponymies also entails some knowledge about the language possibilities and the author’s creativity, by means of a lexicon that enabled the expression of his ideals.

Toponymic commodification and the neoliberal city: on the sale of naming rights for São Paulo’s subway stations

After being practiced for nearly three decades in the city of São Paulo for privately-owned venues such as cinemas, theaters and, more recently, sports stadiums, the sale of naming rights is being applied to state-owned spaces: in April 2020, the Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo (Cia. do Metrô) announced a plan to grant to private exploitation the right to name its stations. This article analyzes this plan, its premises and expectations. It concludes that, while a series of conflicts related to the memory of the city and its spatial landmarks have been identified by recent studies on toponymic commodification and suggested by the city’s antecedents on this matter, such conflicts do not seem to be considered in the plan’s agenda.

Towards an outline of central and southern Portugal potamonymy

Within the set of river names of Portugal, those of the northwest usually stand out because of their archaism. However, rivers located to the south of the Mondego basin and the Central System are no less interesting, as they reveal great etymological heterogeneity, ranging from a few that fit into the pre-Latin substrates to several names that underwent Arabization between the 8th and 13th centuries. Several items also stand out, which are more recent and result from the expansion of the Galician-Portuguese dialects to the south, in the context of the medieval Christian conquest and colonization. This article, which draws on previous research (ROCHA, 2017), sets out an outline of the central and southern Portuguese potamonym by classifying each item etymologically and ascribing them to the stratigraphy and the history of transmission of the current toponymy in the territory in point.

Language and culture in dimension: dialogues between Linguistics and Anthropology in the study of Parkatêjê Onomastics

Onomastic studies in general—and the studies of the onomastic systems of indigenous languages in particular—require interdisciplinary investigations that address properly the diversity inherent in the field. In this vein, the present work discusses how linguistic concepts dialogue with anthropology and ethnography in the study of the onomastic system of Parkatêjê, an indigenous language spoken by the people of the same name, who currently inhabit the area called Reserva Indígena Mãe Maria (RIMM), close to the municipality of Marabá (Pará, Brazil). We will discuss aspects observed in the description of the anthroponyms known and used mostly by native speakers of the Parkatêjê language. The methodology of the study consisted of bibliographic research and ethnographic research with data collection in the indigenous area inhabited by the indigenous communities in question.

Anthroponymic innovation in Bahia during 19th, 20th and 21st centuries: an interface between Anthroponomastics and Historical Morphology

This article aims to trace a historical panorama of anthroponomic innovation in Brazil by analyzing research data on the uses of anthroponyms in the State of Bahia in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The comparison between data from other studies, such as those by Rodrigues (2016; 2019), Cunha and Souza (2017), Lopes and Soledade (2018), Simões Neto and Soledade (2018), Conceição (2018) and Soledade and Simões Neto (2020), provides an understanding of the frequency of the innovative phenomenon and its increase over the years. The article also envisions a morphological characterization of the first names found, under the perspective of the Construction Morphology framework (BOOIJ, 2010; GONÇALVES, 2016). The results point to a vertiginous growth of anthroponomic innovation, starting from the mid-20th century, as well as to the setting of a biformative pattern that has been recurring since the first cases of innovative names.

Verbal and visual language in an excerpt of Ms. Marvel, Volume 1: No normal and its translations to Brazilian and European Portuguese

This article aims to investigate verbal and non-verbal language in an excerpt from Ms. Marvel, Volume 1: No Normal and in two of its translations, one to Brazilian Portuguese and the other one to European Portuguese. To do so, we use Translational Stylistics, Intermodal Translation, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Visual Design Grammar, and Colour Studies, in accordance to the interpersonal metafunction. We used a five-tabbed spreadsheet. The first three tabs encompass the use of verbal language in the categories: Offer, Demand, Information, Goods and Services, Modalisation, and Modulation. The forth tab encompasses non-verbal language in the categories: Offer, Demand, and Basic Colour Terms. The fifth tab is also concerned with non-verbal language, and identifies the most frequent Basic Colour Terms found in the selected panels. In the first four tabs, the categories marked as “yes” through a Microsoft Excel function were later quantified. However, for the fifth tab, the quantification was carried out manually. The results show that the source text and target texts are identical when it comes to the verbal language categories. The results also show that, for non-verbal language, Offer is more frequent than Demand, which matches the results for verbal language. We can conclude that, for verbal language, the differences between the source text and the target texts are micro-textual. We could observe a consonance between the verbal and visual semiotic modes in the selected excerpt.

Olha já! Grammatical construction in Amazon

This work proposes the study of the Amazonian micro- construction olha já, theoretically supported by assumptions of the Grammar of Constructions, with special focus on the mention of Croft (2007) that the syntactic and semantic structures make up the anatomy of a construction and they may be the fundamental concepts and the descriptive terms for the analysis of the structure of a grammatical construction. Through the syntactic and semantic analyzes, the organization of the composition and the global understanding of the micro-construction are verified. It is also proposed a suggestion for the acting of micro-construction in the language. During the work, was verified the existence of other micro-construction composed by the same rule as olha já on the Brazilian Portuguese, which allowed to attest the productivity of the standard.

The use of the “#SóQueSim” construction on Facebook: a semantic-cognitive analysis

In this work, we propose an analysis about the “#SóQueSim” construction, recruited as an irony indicator in interactions established through written posts on the widespread social network Facebook, a multimodal digital genre. In this social network, we can notice a high frequency of use of the theme construction of our article, mainly in the form of the hashtags “#SóQueSim” or “#SQS”. We base it on theoretical assumptions anchored in Cognitive Linguistics, above all, the Construction Grammar, by Goldberg (1995) and the Conceptual Blending, by Fauconnier and Turner (2002). We also seek to show that the extensions of meaning that convey irony – understood according to Coulson (2001; 2005) – are provided pragmatically, from the context of use of this expression. Irony is a linguistic resource widely used in the most varied texts in the written and oral modality. The analysis revealed that the real understanding of the meaning effects of the construction “#SóQueSim” is only possible within a given context of use, which thus reiterates the importance of the communicative scenario. We also found that “#SóQueSim”, in addition to discursively marking the effect of irony, plays, in the textual portions in which it appears, the role of trigger for reiterating the ideas presented.
