Formação da literatura brasileira: Antonio Candido dialectical thinking
This article proposes an interpretation to the work Formação da literatura brasileira by Antonio Candido, emphasizing on the critic thinking that debates between the tradition of how to do literary history, and the theoretical and methodological demands of Antonio Candido’s present. This dialectic game of Candido thinking bases all the construction of this Brazilian literary history, since the choices of the periods, of the authors and the literary works are justified in the dialectic relation that they reveal. The article stands out the notion of literature as an integrated system in the cultural, social and political system of the country, because it gives an important place to the literary theory, critics and history, in the sense that permit them being recognized in the social studies as constructors of society sense.
Predicative possession constructions in the Apurinã language (Arawak)
This research addresses the main issues concerning the ownership linguistic codification in verbal constructions of the Apurinã language (Arawak), spoken by many indigenous communities spreading over different tributaries of the Purus River in the southeastern state of Amazonas. It starts from the contributions of some scholars who are engaged in describing the possession as a language category, in order to compare the typological view of possession in linguistics with the expression of possession in the Apurinã language, specifically in terms of predicative possession. We refer to authors such as Heine (2001), Perniss and Zeshan (2008) and Stassen (2009) for the typological characterization and classification of ownership domain. In the case of predicative possession expression in Apurinã, we present a summary of the analysis previously made by Facundes (1995 and 2000), to then present new data and analysis, based on field research conducted in November 2014 and March 2015. In Apurinã the awa verb, meaning ‘have’, occurs in predicative possession constructions, as in n-awa-ry epi kanawa, ‘I have two canoes’ (where n- encodes the 1st person singular; awa corresponds to the verb ‘to have’; -ry is equivalent to 3rd person masculine singular object; epi means ‘two’ and kanawa corresponds to ‘canoe’). In addition to awa, we detected, during the field research, two other verbal forms never before attested related to the expression of possession in Apurinã, and which will be described in this article. We present, therefore, a review of the analysis previously done by Facundes (1995 and 2000), adding new data and analysis based on data from the most recent field survey.

Comprou, levou? Juxtaposition: common syntactic procedure in advertisements
In this article, we intend to defend the hypothesis that the juxtaposition can be viewed as a syntactic procedure, which is not restricted to the compound period for independent clause and, further, not simply as a subtype of the coordination process - the asyndetic coordination clause. It is based on the notion of semantic interdependence and the prosodic aspects as contour intonation and pauses to differentiate cases of coordination of juxtaposition. The theoretical approach involves functionalist authors such as Mann & Thompson (1986), Decat (2001) and Sandmann (2010) in the advertising area, to name a few. The (65) sixty-five analyzed pieces of data were collected from portfolios of advertising agencies linked to the Brazilian Association of Advertising Agencies (ABAP).

Literary history and postcolonialism: the case of indo-portuguese literature
This paper tries to give an overview on the historical production of the Indo- Portuguese Literature published after 1961, the year of the end of the Portuguese occupation of Goa and its annexation to the Indian Union. Two historiographical texts considered fundamental in the study of Goan Literature will be analyzed, those are Esboço da História da Literatura Indo-portuguesa by priest Filinto Cristo Dias from 1963 and A Literatura Indo-portuguesa by Vimala Devi and Manuel de Seabra from 1971. Although being the first literary stories written in the Postcolonial era, both texts seem to still play a certain colonialist rhetoric, which is reflected in the work structure and the choice of dating the origins of this literature with the beginning of the Portuguese colonial enterprise in India, including also the literary works of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries. These cases will be compared with two texts published in 2012, replacing the definition of Indo-Portuguese Literature with the expression Goan Literature in Portuguese, claiming the autonomy of the latter in relation to the colonizer’s literature. The two books in question are Oriente e Ocidente na Literatura Goesa by priest Eufemiano de Jesus Miranda and Literatura Goesa em Português nos Séculos XIX e XX by Joana Passos. Finally, we shall discuss the problem of Diaspora Literature and their placing on the Literary History of Goa, with the help of Peter Nazareth’s text Pivoting on the Point of the Return – Modern Goan Literature of 2010.
Literary historiography and architecture: intercessions for an alternative writing
This article aims to analyze the arising innovations in the field of literary historiography in opposition to what traditionally has been done. My focus is to reflect on how could alternative ways of literary history be incorporated in order to consider literary texts, authors and/or events in a more complex form than the habitual division by genres. To do this, we analyzed the experiments of contemporary literary historiography A New Literary History of America (2009), edited by Greil Marcus and Werner Sollors; A New History of German Literature (2004), published by David Welberry; and A New History of French Literature (1989), edited by Denis Hollier. The analysis was based on foundations of post modern architecture theory and its critique of the relationship between form and function. It was intended to demonstrate the need for a renewal in literary historiography.
Pressupposition and present subjunctive mood variation
This research investigates the presupposition in three contexts of variation between the present of the subjunctive and of the indicative modes (concessive clauses introduced by embora, apesar de que and se bem que; causal clauses introduced by não; and parenthetical clauses) obtained from one speech data sample: 24 interviews from the city of Florianópolis/SC and 24 interviews from the city of Lages/SC (VARSUL Project Data Base). The first goal is to gather linguistic contexts for expressing, in communicative interaction, a pragmatic value and for being used as a correction strategies; and the second one is to provide a functionalist treatment for variable use of the present of the subjunctive and the indicative mood in the contexts under analysis. We aim at defending that the propriety of correcting presupposition is manifested in these types of clauses, mainly with verbs in the present of indicative. The present of subjunctive is retained in context of subordinating mood (embora) and in some causal clauses (não (é) que).
Semantic reflexes in the syntax of third person
Assuming that pronouns are elements capable of structural decomposition by grammatical atomic components, namely features, it is understood that their syntactic distribution is done by means of feature hierarchy of such features in these nominals (see HARLEY; RITTER, 2002; BEJÁR, 2003; CARVALHO, 2008). Thus, this paper aims to identify the path to the feature composition of the third person pronoun in the accusative position in Brazilian Portuguese, and to verify the relevance of the features [Definite], [Specific] and [Animate].

Cyro Martins and The Província de São Pedro Journal
In the period 1945-1957, the Editora Globo published 21 issues of the journal Província de São Pedro. The periodic directed by Moysés Vellinho (1902-1980) was composed of texts that privilege sociology, history, and especially literature. Among its collaborators, there were names like Guilhermino Cesar, Augusto Meyer, Vianna Moog, Dyonélio Machado, Erico Verissimo, Mario Quintana, Cecilia Meireles, Manuel Bandeira, Otto Maria Carpeaux, Antonio Candido and others. The writer and psychoanalyst Cyro Martins (1908-1995) is also one of those collaborators and is the intellectual trail left by him that this work pursues. Cyro has active and passive participation in the Província: in the first case, he is the author of fictional or critical texts, in the second, his literary work is noted. The Cyro Martins traces’ recovery in the Província de São Pedro assists in refigure the intellectual journey of an individual that was inserted in different ways in the cultural system of Rio Grande do Sul in the first half of the twentieth century. Only with the traces present in the Província, it is possible to grasp that Cyro had a varied action, as he played in the same journal the role of novelist and literary critic – in addition to its production discussed or mentioned in a significant number of texts.
Women, marriage and motherhood: the reception of German, Austrian and Swiss female writers in Koseritz’ Deutscher Volkskalender für Brasilien (1899-1918; 1921-1938)
Between the year of 1899 and 1938 the German language almanac Koseritz’ deutscher Volkskalender für Brasilien, edited in Porto Alegre/ RS, publishes literary texts of German, Austrian and Swiss female writers. This article analyses the representations of female figures presented in short stories and poems of these female writers and his process of reception as a contribution to the history both of books and reading and literary.
VS order in imperative sentences of Brazilian Portuguese
This paper discusses some aspects of VS order in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) within imperative sentences. On one hand, Rivero (1994), Han (2001), Zeijlstra (2006) and others assume that VS order in imperatives derives from Verb movement to C° to check an [+imperative] feature, crossing the subject in Spec,TP. On the other hand, research on word order in BP demonstrates that VS in declarative and interrogative sentences became restricted due to the loss of °-to-C° movement. However, VS is still productive in BP imperative sentences, even with verbs of multiple arguments. This situation may suggest the hypothesis that BP has lost V°-to-C° movement in declaratives and interrogatives, but not in imperatives. To test this hypothesis, we analyze some pragmatic contexts of imperative use. Our results show that: (i) BP imperative verbs remain in T°; (ii) VS order in imperatives is actually a case of V(O)S order even in sentences with apparent VSO order; (iii) the subject position doesn’t result from verb movement, but rather from focalization processes.

Adverbial clauses introduced by the transpositors sem/sem que (without/unless): the relation between the order of the satellite clause and communicative purposes
This article intends to analyze the relationship between order and textual-discursive functions of satellite clauses introduced by transpositors sem/sem que. We have attempted to show that cognitive, textual and communicative factors influence the speakers’ choices. We therefore consider aspects such as ease of understanding, establishment of cohesion/coherence and subjectivity/argumentation that reveal the existence of iconic motivation in the process of sentence organization. We also highlight the functions of parenthetical clauses, keeping in view of its evaluative character, which is a mark of argumentative texts.

Supporting verbs dar/levar: a case of grammaticalization?
This paper focuses on the use of the support verbs “dar” (give) and “levar” (take/get) followed by predicational nouns, occurring in sentences structured as N0 dar Npred a N1 = N1 levar Npred de N0 (João deu um fora em Ana = Ana levou um fora de João), in contexts in which there is a syntactic-semantic correspondence. We also aim to evaluate the extent to which the facts confirm the hypothesis that, in this type of structure, these support verbs constitute a grammatical word. The description includes a set of examples widely used in the web and yielded by relying on native speakers´ intuition about acceptability. Lexicon-Grammar (GROSS, 1975) and Grammaticalization (HEINE; Claudi; Hunne meyer , 1991) are articulated in order to confirm whether the transformation of the plain verb dar/levar into a support verb can be considered a process of grammaticalization.

The drug leaflet and its language: a study on the linguistic structures of genre
This article presents a study of passive constructions in drug leaflets produced in Brazil, considering the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic complexity of the Portuguese language in use, especially the efforts of their producers to meet the new requirements of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), regulations standardized in 2009, which require, among other things, the use of a clearer and more objective language, ensuring that readers have access to safe and adequate information for the rational use of drugs. The objective of this research is to analyze the language used in the drug leaflet genre, attempting specifically to identify and discuss: a) the different language structures in the text of the selected leaflets; b) if and when agent deletion strategies are adopted. It was taken as an assumption that, in more formal and nonfiction texts, as it is the case of the drug leaflet genre, the use of passive structures would be more frequent, with the deletion of the agent motivated by the easy retrieval of information made by people, based on their general pragmatic knowledge. The theoretical framework used starts with a historical overview with reflections on the traditional approach, moving to the formalistic approach to language, and adopting as reference the Linguistic Functionalism of Givón (1979, 1984, 1995), Shibatani (1985) and Furtado da Cunha (2000), as well as contributions from Textual Linguistics for the analysis of the genre. The corpus for the research was selected from the texts of leaflets collected digitally in the electronic list of drug leaflets made available in the ANVISA website as well as collected physically in drug packages found at home or in drugstores. We have decided to analyze the text of leaflets of the most common drugs in Brazil, taking as a standard those mentioned in the health website and listed for sale in popular drugstores, selected randomly among the best known and most easily found in Brazilian homes, with priority being given, in this study, to the leaflets designed to be read by patients, i.e., the lay public.

The semantics of bare nouns in Brazilian Portuguese spoken in Teresina – PI
This paper investigates the semantics of bare nouns in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) variety spoken in Teresina. In order to explain the behavior of bare nouns in natural languages, Chierchia (1998) proposes a nominal parameter. In his proposal, languages are divided in three types: (i) there are languages with bare nouns occurring freely as arguments, with no number morphology (bare singulars); (ii) there are languages with bare nouns occurring only in restricted contexts, always with number morphology (bare plurals); (iii) and for some languages only mass nouns appear as bare singulars, while count nouns appear as bare plurals. There is a consensus in the literature on the fact that BP data indicates the need of reformulating Chierchia’s proposal, since both singular and plural bare nouns occur freely as an argument in such a language. The aim of this paper is to look into the BP spoken in Teresina (PI), discussing the distribution of bare nouns in argumental positions, as well as their denotation, and finding out their possible interpretations. In order to achieve our goal, we have performed corpus-based research. Our analysis was concentrated on the PORFATER corpus. Regarding the distribution of bare nouns, we found out that they only occur freely in complement position, showing generic readings as well as existential readings. We also did not find kind denotations for bare nouns at all. Such a picture leads to the conclusion that bare nouns in the BP variety spoken in Teresina behave like indefinites in Heim’s 1982 view. The bare nouns in the examined corpus do not denote kinds. We also claim that whenever they seem to be in subject position they are actually a sentential topic, as in Müller (2004).

Syntax-Semantics interface: making the case for a construction grammar approach to Brazilian Portuguese VS order
This papers aims at developing a construction grammar approach to subject inversion in Brazilian Portuguese. After arguing that the verb-subject structure is best understood as a grammatical construction (thus a symbolic unit), we go on to analyze the semantic dimension of the VS construction in two separate levels: Verhagen’s (2005) object-level (the construction’s predication) and subject-level (the construal imposed on the predication). It is also argued that the correlations often found between subject inversion, on the one hand, and unnacusativity or lack of agentivity, on the other, can be regarded as by-products of the general proposal advanced here.

The otherness as a fact and a reason for the writing of literary histories
This article aims to discuss the narrative structure of possible Literary History(ies), as from the articulation of concepts of Certeau and Paul Ricoeur on the writing of History. The systemic approach of Grumbrecht and the narratological elements proposed by David Perkins for the construction of literary history(ies) seem to go along with contemporary issues of identity and belonging to marginalized groups (otherness) seeking their places in the literary representation.

Ridendo Castigat Mores: the struggle against the “parnasian fleas” in the pages of the Semana Ilustrada
Within the literary criticism in the chronicles of the Semana Ilustrada (1861-1876), I propose to identify what characterize the so-called “bad poets”. These “rhymer poets”, “poets without lute”, “invalid poets”, “poets of broken foot”, were constantly targeted by the chroniclers to ridicule. It was with subtle irony or with overt demonstration, the chroniclers that pointed to the “poetic aberrations” had the objective to correct through the laughter, as the motto of the Semana Ilustrada was precisely the latin saying: “Ridendo castigat mores”. As, in addition to the “reverse criticism”, had also the called “serious criticism”, which differed from one another was that it was an exaggerated tone, in addition to the excerpts transcribed that deny the praise to the examined poet. In one of the texts the chronicler calls “parnasian flea” the writers without skill and knowledge. So, therefore, the traces of these writers without talent can be possible to distinguish the aspects that should be avoided in poetry from the 1960s and 1970s of the 19th century. By the according to the chroniclers of the Semana Ilustrada, are also check that the elements discussed are still current, because it´s conditions for the writers.
Syntax and prosody: antisymmetry, hierarchy and isomorphism
Here I consider two important theoretical proposals of generative grammar tradition, both developed on independent grounds: Kayne (1995), about the antisymmetric character of syntax, and Selkirk (1980), about the theory of prosodic domains. The goal in this paper is to demonstrate that there exists a fundamental relationship between these two theoretical proposals, one of cause and consequence. I argue in favor of the claim that hierarchical prosodic domains are an expression of hierarchical domains established within syntactic structures and that, as a consequence, there is isomorphism between syntax and prosody and it should be explored as a way of evaluating hypothetical syntactic representations. In order words, prosodic properties may be useful in choosing between two competing syntactic phrasings of an expression when no other independent criteria is available.
Behind the curtain: dictionary of dramatic author’s from Rio Grande do Sul contributes to literary history
This paper aims on considerations about gaúcha dramatic literature since Antenor Fischer’s recent publication in the form of a dictionary. When gathering entries of authors of theatrical texts, from XIX until early XX century, Fischer reflects on the contribution of the dramatic genre in the construction and consolidation of the literary and theatrical productions of the State. With that in view, as the researcher arguments, that this genre appears to be in a “second plain” in the literary historiographies, it becomes necessary not only it’s inclusion, but also to assure it’s importance when it evidences, among other aspects, the repercussion of the abolition theme in the scope of the eighteenth hundred’s society and the expressive space taken by comedy in gaúcho theaters, as well as the changes, of a ‘text-centered’ period to a staging-theater period and it’s performance characteristics of the XX and XXI centuries. This way, it is intended, through a thorough reading, present, and thus, contemplate the Dicionário de autores da literatura dramática do Rio Grande do Sul (2014) as a significative work to literary history.
Araripe Júnior reads Flaubert mail
Writers’ letters might contain relevant information on literature conceptions and creation processes. Flaubert’s mail reveals a lot about his aesthetics his thought about art. When it was published for the first time, at the end of the XIX century, it contributed to the literary consolidation of its author. Also, among the Brazilian critics of the time, this mail cooperated with the formation of an image of Flaubert as a writer who was extremely devoted to the style. In this paper, we propose some reflection on the critical judgment that Araripe Júnior developed about Flaubert when he read this novelist’s mail.
