Grammar, language and norm: three concepts for thinking critically

This paper relates the results of an interview with undergraduate students and discusses the importance of understanding the concepts of grammar, language and norm from a scientific point of view in order to consolidate the critical thinking. The hypothesis which motivates this study is that those beliefs about good and bad language (endorsed by many teachers according to previous studies) is due to comprehending those concepts from a prescriptive point of view.

The concept of norm applied to Spanish learning and its linguistic varieties in the Brazilian context

This article aims to discuss the concept of norm applied to the Brazilian context related to Spanish learning, especially focusing on the insertion of the linguistic variation phenomena in the classroom. We deal with the linguistic norm from two lines of work defined by Deoclécio and Bagno (2021): the teaching of foreign languages ​​from a polycentric perspective and linguistic education to promote tolerance and combat linguistic prejudice. To carry out this work, our theoretical framework is made up of Brazilian and Spanish-speaking researchers who discuss the norm from these two axes such as Andión, (2008), Bagno (2003), Fanjul (2011), Faraco and Zilles (2017) and Moreno Fernández (2007, 2008). In this way, it was possible to understand and differentiate the standardization processes of Spanish and Portuguese with the purpose of making Spanish teachers in Brazil aware of the different linguistic norms present in both languages. We consider that this knowledge is useful for the insertion of linguistic variation contents from a polycentric perspective in Spanish learning as proposed by Andión (2005, 2007), Andión and Casado (2014), Venâncio da Silva and Andión (2019) and Venâncio da Silva (2020).

The The contributions of Corpus Linguistics and Natural Language Processing in the elaboration of the prototype of the Ideological Dictionary of Locutions

In this work, we seek to demonstrate how resources and tools of Corpus Linguistics and Natural Language Processing could be used in the generation of the prototype of the Ideological Dictionary of Locutions, monolingual and, at the same time, onomasiological and semasiological. This type of phraseographic repertoire is composed of three large sections in the dictionary body: the synoptic-analogical part, the analogical (both corresponding to the onomasiological part of the work) and the alphabetical (with a semasiological characteristic). In developing this project, we used the Corpus Brasileiro and the Web as corpora.    As a tool for the elaboration of the dictionary body, we used the FieldWorks Language Explore software, FLEx. In the end, it was possible to verify that these computational instruments were of fundamental relevance for the accomplishment of the research purpose.

Auteur dubbing Translation, performance and authorial control in the dubbed versions of Stanley Kubrick’s films

Stanley Kubrick was one of the few film directors who took an active role in the creation of foreign-language versions. From A Clockwork Orange onwards, he personally chose the dubbing director for all the dubbed versions and had an active part in the voice casting (Chiaro 2007, Nornes 2007). By looking at a variety of sources, this chapter aims to illustrate the genesis of the dubbed versions of Kubrick’s films, focusing on the film director’s role and degree of intervention in the production process. It will be argued that, by overseeing all aspects of the dubbing process, Kubrick conferred a special status on the foreign-language releases of his films, which are to be regarded as authorized versions on which an unusually evident authorial imprint was imposed.

Latin America: identity and social constructions in Spanish language textbooks projects of the 2018 PNLD

This paper intends to analyze the Latin-American social identities and groups representations in the projects suggested by the nine textbooks from the three collections approved in the 2018 Textbook National Program - PNLD (Cercanía Joven, Sentidos en lengua española and Confluencia). The research is inserted in the theoretical field of Applied Linguistics, starting from the epistemological categories of decoloniality and interculturality. The methodology followed is from qualitative and documental by descriptive method and interpretivist natures. The results from the research reveal that the analyzed projects collections positively contribute to the construction of non-marginalized Latin-American identities, as they allow observing the existence of works related to a decolonial and intercultural view. Besides, they suggest that the textbooks themselves promote reflections and debates concerning the fight against the inequalities and in favor of the differences, as it is intended by the Applied Linguistics in the contemporaneity.

Brazilian Portuguese verbal databases

This paper presents a survey and an analysis of Brazilian Portuguese lexical verbal databases, which are possible to use in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. For this purpose, we considered for analysis only databases with a dimension greater than 1.000 verbal lexemes, free online access, and updated in the last 10 years. Therefore, the study fell on the critical and comparative analysis of three lexical databases: VerbNet.Br (SCARTON, 2013), Verbo-Brasil (DURAN; ALUÍSIO, 2015) and VerboWeb (CANÇADO et. al., 2018), highlighting their commonalities and divergences. It is believed that this research contributes to updating the state-of-the-art, regarding the BP lexical verbal databases of the last decade, in addition to listing future investigations to create, revise and/or extend BP descriptive linguistic resources.

Manejos subjetivos na formação de professores: conversações sobre as contribuições da pedagogia institucional

Developed in France between 1950 and 1960 by pedagogues, psychiatrists, and psychoanalysts, institutional pedagogy invests on exchanges and group mediations and on the notion of collective, promoting diverse activities and dynamics to trigger reciprocity and intensify dialogicity directed at conflict solutions or stalemate in the school and the teaching education environment. In spite of not being very  known in Brazil in its psychoanalysis most permeated perspective, this pedagogical current uses the premise of subjective division to discuss learning and teacher education issues, with a  particular focus on situations in which subjectivity is caught in pedagogical practices. Franco-Brazilian discursive studies converge at this same point, which renders both fields affected by Freudo-Lacanian psychoanalysis concerning the same theme. The following interview resulted from a research mission with Prof. XXXX, at YYYY University, in 2019. It materializes a fruitful dialogue between two researchers from different fields, interested in the issues alike, addressing the importance of language practice in devices that privilege forms of subjectivation in teaching education and the relationship between language and subjectivity.

PFN-PT: a Framenet annotator for Portuguese

This article presents PFN-PT, a robust system for the automatic semantic annotation of Portuguese, consisting of a new, parsing-oriented framenet and a rule-based frame- and role-tagger. The framenet provides almost 13,000 valency frames covering 7,300 verb lemmas with 10,700 senses. Frame and role tagging is achieved by iterated matching of syntactic structures and semantic noun types with slot-filler conditions in the framenet. We discuss design principles and present frame and role statistics. In an evaluation run on news data, the system achieved an overall F-score of 92.2% for frame senses.

The phenomenon of agent defocusing: a discussion of the relevance of computational resources for linguistic studies

Although expanding, empirical linguistic research on the Portuguese language is still far from reaching its full potential. We believe that this might be due to some researchers lack of awareness of resources already available for free. In this article, we present some Corpus Linguistics tools and a corpus of academic writing in Portuguese (CoPEP), and how they can be used to explore the phenomenon of agent defocusing in academic articles published in Brazil and Portugal. For this, we use existing resources to annotate and make available, free of charge and online, the CoPEP, an extremely useful corpus for linguistic investigations on academic Portuguese.

Modeling verb valency in a computational grammar for Portuguese in the HPSG formalism

HPSG is a lexicalist grammatical theory that proposes the parallel formalization of morphosyntactic and semantic structures. This work describes the computational implementation of verbal valences in a new Portuguese grammar in this formalism. This grammar is relevant not only for text understanding applications, but also represents a contribution to the formal documentation of the structures of the language, standing out for its treatment of control and raising constructions. The grammar has been incrementally implemented through its application to increasingly comprehensive test suites. With 278 entries and a total of 215 lemmas, the verb lexicon is still small. However, the proposed type hierarchy models the properties of 118 valence classes, of which 57 are types that encode  verb classes. The grammar analyzes 94% of a total of 581 grammatical sentences, while showing low hypergeneration in a set of 167 ungrammatical examples.

AGRICULTURA FAMILIAR, PLURIATIVIDADE E TURISMO RURAL: reflexões a partir do território fluminense / FAMILY AGRICULTURE, PLURAL ACTIVITIES AND RURAL TURISM: reflextions concerning the fluminense territory

Resumo O Território Fluminense encontra-se marcado por um intenso processo de urbanização que tem provocado profundas transformações socioespaciais. Entre elas destacamos as atividades associadas ao turismo rural contemporâneo, com a proliferação de hotéisfazenda, spas, pousadas, e casas de segunda residência, e a manutenção e até mesmo o aumento da produção familiar. A proliferação dessas atividades possibilitou aos produtores familiares a inserção em atividades não-agrícolas e conseqüentemente o aumento da renda familiar. Porém esse processo ocorre nas áreas dos eixos de urbanização e próxima a RMRJ. Nas áreas mais distantes, os produtores familiares continuam na dependência da renda agrícola e enfrentando inúmeros problemas para a realização de suas atividades.Destarte, o objetivo desse ensaio é o de apresentar algumas características sobre as abordagens da produção familiar e suas estratégias de sobrevivência, seja através de empregos agrícolas ou não-agrícolas, e o papel que o turismo rural vem desempenhando nesse processo. Nossa reflexão está centrada a partir do território fluminense resultado de nossas investigações sobre as transformações que estão ocorrendo em seu espaço rural.

CAMPONESES, CULTURA E INOVAÇÕES / PAYSANS, CULTURE ET INNOVATIONS

Resumo A identidade camponesa no Brasil foi sendo construída passo a passo juntamente com a história da formação do território brasileiro. Os camponeses que hoje estão nos assentamentos constituem estas comunidades simbólicas geradoras do sentimento de pertencimento na busca de novas raízes, na busca de re-territorialização. Entre erros e acertos uma nova territorialidade vai sendo construída. Muitos abandonam, desistem, vão para outros lugares, mas há aqueles que ficam, resistem e começam a construir um território onde as marcas de sua trajetória vão sendo fixadas como marcos de usa identidade. O caso do Rio Grande do Sul permite identificar a reconstrução desta nova territorialidade a partir da pesquisa desenvolvida junto a diferentes assentamentos do estado, principalmente aqueles localizados na Metade Sul.

CAMPO-TERRITÓRIO: considerações teórico-metodológicas / FIELD - TERRITORY: considerations theoretical - methodological

Resumo A produção agropecuária familiar cumpre com um papel central na economia brasileira, gerando, sobretudo, alimentos a baixos preços. Os produtores familiares, donos dos meios de produção e normalmente com baixo nível tecnológico, trabalham duramente todos os dias, condicionados biológica e socialmente. São subordinados e explorados pelos agentes do capital, embora, muitas vezes, tenham uma lógica predominantemente de subsistência da família. É na circulação simples de mercadorias que são sujeitados e estabelecem distintas redes geográficas, interligando-se ao urbano e à cidade. Desta maneira, consideramos que a abordagem territorial constitui-se num caminho fundamental para a compreensão do movimento, de contradições e da heterogeneidade, e, pode subsidiar a elaboração de projetos de desenvolvimento com vistas a uma sociedade mais justa.

Resumo Neste trabalho pretende-se contribuir para o debate travado por alguns dos principais autores da teoria social crítica, que focalizam o tema das interações entre o urbano e o rural. Os elementos obtidos nas principais abordagens, sugerem que uma outra dialética pode conduzir-nos à idéia de "urbanidades no ruralâ€?, considerando-as como manifestações de territórios híbridos, nos quais urbano e rural interagem.
