THE CAR AS A PLACE: PERSPECTIVES OF TERRITORIALITIES AND REPRESENTANTIONS IN CURITIBA

This work translates the results of a qualitative research which employed the theoretical tennets of Cultural Geography. One of its research goals was to map the motivations of 30 car owners, in the city of Curitiba, who vehiculated personal messages on their car plates through the combinations of letters and algarisms. The plates were chosen for this research as elements which allowed the researcher to understand the construction of the object Car as a “place”, and of the related territorialities developed by them on the streets of Curitiba. The data collected and generated during the fieldwork stage, in which the above mentioned cars’ owners were interviewed, led to the use of diverse theoretical approaches, such as the Social Representation Theory, Ethnometodoly, Phenomenology, and also the concept of Transverse Mass Culture. For the analysis of the results, the concepts of “place” and “territory” were employed as the necessary tools to systematize, understand, and present the data obtained under the guidance of the discipline of Cultural Geography.

GEOGRAPHY OF SOCIAL INEQUALITY: APPROACH FOR A CRITICAL URBAN GEOGRAPHY PRESENTED BY THE SOCIAL PRODUCTION OF THE FAVELA IN SALVADOR (BAHIA)

The empirical analysis of the invisible reproduction of social and spatial inequalities in Brazilian cities demands a specific approach. The following article highlights this approach while taking a critical view on a geography of social inequality. It intends to conceptually contribute to the ongoing research into the causes of perpetuating injustices and examining space as a powerful factor in the reproduction of social inequality. This approach, which is one of hermeneutical geography, aims to understand the structure of the city in its social construction. Taking the idiographic example of Salvador in Brazil background knowledge was acquired following the principles of grounded theory. The approach should be seen as a transferable concept also applicable to other metropolises and societies that are part of the so called “modern periphery” (SOUZA 2000, 2006). The “modern periphery” is characterized by hidden mechanisms perpetuating the logic of social domination and subordination. The specific geographical focus of this approach is to understand the fragmented and divided urban space, coming from different social dispositions. This shall be examined at the example of the social construction and meaning of the favelas.

QUALITATIVE FIELD RESEARCH: EXPRIENCE IN HUMANISTIC GEOGRAPHY

This paper aims at describing the experience of a qualitative field research in Geography under a humanistic approach. The field research was carried out in Itacaré, located in the south of Bahia state, aiming at understanding how the individuals from Itacaré perceive Rio das Contas, what the river means to them. We have chosen oral history as field research method and the techniques of oral interview, observation and the record of landscapes through photography. Our presence in Itacaré was critical for the field research’s success as we could get to know better the people and their everyday life, which contributed for the quality of the information contained in the 41 oral interviews collected. Also, staying with these people was a valuable experience under the Humanistic Geography perspective.

THE APPROACH OF LANDSCAPE ON THE FIELD OF INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

The bibliography on the concept of landscape and its affinity with geographical science is huge. The focus, however, lies mostly on the history of the concept that goes from the positive approaches of the XIX century to both the functionalist and cultural approaches, which assumed increasing importance since late XX century. It is noticed, in general, that both the descriptive and the utilitarian approaches are giving way to approaches which attempt to grasp the essence of geo-environmental relations as well as their processes. This article aims at discussing such concept in the light of the posits of the so-called Russian School headed by Victor Sotchava and supported by Frenchmen Jean Tricart and Georges Bertrand and by Brazilian Carlos Augusto de Figueiredo Monteiro. It also includes a brief assessment of the scenery that is, little by little, being built in face of the possibilities of the new technologies. It is clear that, despite important development of the monitoring techniques as well as of the cartographic technologies, the scope of empiric modes capable of translating the complexities of the integrated dynamics of the environment is still an unresolved issue.

INTERFACE BETWEEN CLIMATOLOGY AND EPIDEMIOLOGY: A GEOGRAPHICAL APPROACH

The relations established between climate and health are numerous and have come a long way since antiquity. Climatology and epidemiology have close historical ties which have become increasingly close to each other along their evolutionary lines due to currently environmental problems that produce impact on the human health. This paper mainly aims to bring some considerations upon the interfaces of these two areas of knowledge, focusing on methods and techniques common in studies of interdisciplinary character. The climate and health binomial is of great particular interest of numerous professionals involving discussions of inter and multidisciplinary nature. The space in the context of this theme represents an important category of analysis, being designed as a historical contingency of the social reproduction process, generating the need for economic and social organization of a particular spatial planning. In Geography, space is physical, is economical, political, and there is, therefore, no way of thinking man abstracting of this category. Within the framework of epidemiological studies, the space has been considered under different approaches, beyond the mere identification of causal factors, involving increasingly, the establishment of the environmental and social context in which the health phenomena are processed. In short, the issues presented here are directly associated with the existing gap in the increasingly globalised world and at the same time committed to the society-nature relationship.

ABOUT THE LIVED DIMENSION OF TERRITORY: TENDENCIES AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF PHENOMENOLOGY

The territory is one of the most important notions in Geography, as concept and as category which orients the sociospatial researches and problematics; in the most cases, it was associated with studies on the field of the Political Geography, related to the Nation-States. However, another perspective of territory always has been latent: the one about small groups or individuals which constitute territories from the lived space dimension. At Brazil, in the last two decades, theoretical studies mentioned this phenomenon as empirical researches about them arose up. This paper presents a review and discussion about these contributions and their theoretical and methodological basis and it will point the absence of Phenomenology on this researches and the pertinence insertion of this philosophic ground to clarify the lived dimension of territory.
