PLACE AND CRIMINALITY: GEOGRAPHICAL READINGS OF NEWSPAPERS FROM SALVADOR CITY

The analysis concerning criminality at/of the places, by printed media, have produced a reflection about the representations of space and spaces of representation in Salvador metropolis. The data used in the analysis were extracted from the newspapers A Tarde and Correio da Bahia, in the year of 2009, involving the following data: types of violence, location’s occurrence of crimes and characterizations of theirs victims. The results have demonstrated the recognition of heterogeneous places in Salvador metropolis, but without producing analysis of the contradictions experienced in such spaces. The description about violent acts, locations and peoples, often, were copied from reports from the Police. The heterogeneous places when not detailed and not interrelated with contexts experienced in the metropolis, solidified the representations of spaces and reduces, for example, the problem of violence to the simple aspect of criminality. The present article defenses that, the study of place needs the deepening of life space articulated whit conceived and perceived spaces, something already considered important by journalists, but practiced by few, in the writing process of news about violence in Brazil.

SCIENCES HUMAINES ET SOCIALES: SCIENCES "MOLLES"? A PROPOS DU TRAVAIL SCIENTIFIQUE DANS LA CONTEMRAINETÉ: ciências moles? A propósito do trabalho científico nesta contemporaneidade

The citizens topophilia and the natural urban patrimony: Coimbra’s case study

This paper analyzes the importance of natural patrimony in the urban environment, under the prism of geography. The main objective of this study is to understand how nature is perceived in the city of Coimbra (Portugal) and the role that green areas and natural patrimony has in the quality of urban life. To achieve these objectives, this article discusses the conceptual argument about environmental perception, topophilia and the nature in the city. For this, it was used two different procedures: (1) Field analysis on the city of Coimbra with purpose to setting up a photographic database, to verify the presence, conservation and relationship to the natural patrimony inserted in urban environment; (2) Investigation through interviews in two neighborhoods of the city – Vale das Flores and Monte Formoso. The data revealed that the perception and the topophilic relationship to urban green areas are marked by the contradiction between practice and discourse. It was concluded that the presence of natural patrimony in the urban environment still present itself as a secondary issue. Moreover, it was concluded that to strengthen this relationship symbolically and/or functionally the natural patrimony must be present throughout all the continuous urban areas and should not be restricted to elite neighborhoods or parks.

LAND ISSUE: THE LAND AS A SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC NEED FOR THE QUILOMBOLA REPRODUCTION

These practices, besides cultural, relate to the religiosity , politics and forms of production, involving agricultural techniques, forms of soil management, planting forms, becoming in an intimate relationship of these communities with the environment in which they are inserted, starting from the development of conservationist techniques and rational use of natural resources, thus ensuring the maintenance of biodiversity for the benefit of future generations. Their achievements had passed automatically for a period of democratization of the country in which the black movement and leaderships of Quilombolas communities had intensified the fight for rights that would guarantee citizenship to these communities. The aim of this paper is to analyze the achievements that occurred from these movements that ensured the beginning of their rights when involved in the process of elaboration of the Constitution of 1988, they ensured the right to preserve their identity and culture, as well as the right of title deed of occupied lands by several years by a people who was opposed to the slave regime and formed a new model of society and social relations.

Old applications and new possibilities for the use of comparative method on geographical studies

At present, there is extensive geographical research and publication focusing on the comparison among metropolises, mid-size cities, agricultural zones, and conservation units. In many cases, however, that intellectual output is not preceded by any in-depth methodological discussion, in such way that comparisons are simply made between two or more similar geographical areas. Thus, this paper aims at discussing a few themes concerning the application of the comparative method in Geography. To that end, there will be three main discussion points: (a) a conceptual framework concerning the methodological approach herein, (b) a historiographical review that seeks to establish, in the history of geographical thought, the moments in which the comparative perspective was a concern among science writers; and, at last, (c) an exploratory analysis about the adequacy of using the comparative approach in contemporary geography, taking into consideration the relative complexity of building local technical scientific informational databases. Therefore, the need to understand the relation between the creation of similarity spaces, which are generated within a global logic, and spaces of difference, which result from a local effort to preserve unique characteristics, suggests that the comparative method may play a key role in geographical studies.

A STUDY ON THE ONTOLOGY OF SPACE IN WORK OF MARTIN HEIDEGGER

This article aims to contribute to the study of the ontology of space in the work of Martin Heidegger. To do so, within the limitations of this work, we analyze the characteristics of Heideggerian phenomenology, pointing out how the German philosopher thinks his philosophy as an alternative to traditional metaphysics conceived in modernity. The main objective here is to focus discussion on the meaning of man as being in the world, understanding space as a category of analysis of great importance to man-in-the-world, to society and, therefore, for science geographical.

THE INITIAL IMPACTS OF THE 1850 LAND LAW OVER THE LAND STRUCTURE OF THE CITY OF PARAHYBA

The present article seeks to analyze the repercussion of the Land Law (1850) and other norms installed between 1850 and mid-twentieth century, over the land structure in the city of Parahyba. The research is based on the Historical Geography perspective, regarded by Philo (1997) as a sub-discipline whose main goal is to spatialize the phenomena of the past aiming at comprehending the processes that have led the current reality to be this. The starting point is to understand that a critical study is built up by means of interaction of temporal succession along with the spatial simultaneity for an eventual land structure analysis of the main streets of the city of Parahyba to be presented. The urban soil’s privatization process institutionalized by the Land Law (1850) is believed to be an important mark for the comprehension of the city, of urban life and, finally, of the street. Thus, the focus was on the incidence of the Land Law on the main streets of the city of Parahyba which are Rua General Osório (Rua Nova/ Marques do Herval), Duque de Caxias (Rua Direita) and Visconde de Pelotas (Rua da Cadeia). Thus, it is revealed that the norms which provide support to the urban land privatization, salubrity and embellishment of the city have changed not only the land structure but also the morphology and contents of the city and city life as well.

POPULATION GROWTH IN THE STATE OF BAHIA, 2000 TO 2010: A STATISTICALCARTOGRAPHIC CONTRIBUTION

The paper examines the recent diversity (2000 to 2010) of the total population of the State of Bahia, micro-regions, urban population, population of cities and the rural population. Official data from Brazilian Censuses of 2000 and 2010 were used. Demographic spatial analyses were produced through the cartographic representation based on natural breaks classification from data. The State’s total population growth of 7.27% in the last decade (or 0.70% p.a.), was lower than the previous decade and is lower than in the Northeast and in Brazil. The urban population grew 15.16% (1.42% p.a.), the population of cities, 14.59% (1.37% p.a.) and the rural population, -8.93% (-0.93% p.a.) The rates are quite diversified according to the micro-regions and municipalities. The average growth of cities was higher than the growth of Salvador and its metropolitan area. It is a fact which occurs for the first time in the State of Bahia and indicates an important reduction of the primacy of the capital and the metropolitan region of Salvador. Ongoing changes are of fundamental importance to guide the formulation of public policies more efficient and fair throughout the territory of Bahia.
