Izumo dome: integrated studies about architecture, structure and construction
This work presents a critical analysis about Izumo dome and the intrinsic relations among architecture, structure and construction method, verifying that the adopted solutions reflects the interdisciplinarity existent in this work, which ally concepts of large spans architecture; mixed structure in laminated timber and metallic joins and rationalized construction in push-up. Verify it, as well, the characteristics of the constructed spaces, structural system's behavior and the constructors operations, through a physical model and graphics comparisons.

This article's main objective is to develop an understanding of how different social groups perceive, adapt to, and are connected to, spaces. Accordingly, we raise and discuss issues regarding how public initiatives for urban spaces have changed. Data used in this article came from a 1998 ethnographic research study of a spontaneous settlement close to an environmental protection area, Parque Metropolitano do Abaeté, in Salvador, Brazil. This park was subject to extensive restoration that changed its former characteristics. The findings show that the perception of these residents regarding their settlement and the spaces around it was closely associated with the residents' growing disbelief of public initiatives. It was also linked to their progressive disempowerment associated with permanent social victimization, the result of being excluded from productive processes.
Space, time, and place
This article investigates and discusses mediator characteristics of space, time, and place references, as well as their influences on social construction processes. It examines the consequences of the man/space/technology relationship in the shaping of the identity of domain spaces and their simultaneous characterization as a cultural inheritance and patrimony of their users. It also briefly explores the interference of the existing capitalist model and its predominance, through hegemonic classes, in the definition of the strategies of intervention, designation, and appropriation of spaces. Finally, it shows the possibility, or need, to look for non-excluding formulas for the shaping and re-designation of spaces, so that they can be used as tools to narrow inequalities and promote social reconciliation.
Urban landscape as a communication system: focusing on the city of São Paulo

Directional analysis of são paulo metropolitan region urban growing (1905-2001), using fractal dimension
The objective of this study is to analyze the growing process of São Paulo metropolitan area urban agglomeration, from 1905 to 2001. Fractal analysis was used to identify factors that influenced the urban shape, spatial distribution of structures and the density of the occupation in the urbanized areas. This study was accomplished to thematic maps and orbital images. Using the association between concentric circles and cell count methods, the fractal dimension was measured to yield occupational density (Dd) of the urban areas. Urban agglomeration showed means values of Dd = 1.755 - which reflect a non-homogeneity in the filling pattern of the density from central to peripheral circle of urban space. Mean fractal dimension of urban radial growing was calculated to eight urban radial sectors as following: (I) Cantareira=1.829; (II) East Zone=1.898; (III) Mauá=1.848; (IV) Ipiranga=1.852; (V) Billings=1.858; (VI) Santo Amaro/Interlagos=1.848; (VII) Castelo Branco/Anhangüera=1.859; and (VIII) Anhangüera/Bandeirantes=1.863. Among determinants factors on fractal behavior of the sectors I, III, IV, V, VI e VIII, the topographical, hydrographical and environment-legal constraints did influence on fragmented occupation; and for sectors II, III, IV, VI e VII the high density of the occupation was supported by the public incentives on industrial, business and road development.
Urban voids as preservation voids: franco da rocha in the lands of Juquery
Modern ornaments: portinary's tiles in Pampulha church
Brazilian architecture from the period of 1930-1940 exhibits many atemporal concepts, representing architecture that is solid enough to absorb external influences without being overwhelmed by them. The focus of this article is to analyze azulejaria (ceramic tiles), used as a means of visually composing environments and providing legitimacy to architecture. This article will not attempt to review the whole architectural output of this period, but rather to review Brazilian architectural aesthetic values by analyzing elements in its key buildings. To do so, buildings that converge the work of both Portinari and Niemeyer are studied. We methodologically associate ambiance from the Brazilian modernist movement to understand the relationship among spaces, whether from a pictorial or architectural standpoint. Azulejaria was found to play an important role in architecture following the opening of the Pampulha Church, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in the late 1940s. It attracted considerable attention of Brazil's neighboring countries, because in the first half of the 20th century these nations were trying to achieve their cultural autonomy.

Between documentation and suggestion
