São discutidos os modelos urbanísticos e as imagens ideais gerados pelos quatro principais paradigmas de desenvolvimento perseguidos desde o final do século passado. Seus rebatimentos nas areas centrais são a nossa preocupa­ ção principal e contesta-se sua aplicabilidade direta enquanto baseados em modelos idealizados e/ou contextos não-específicos. O paradigma da revitalização mostra-se viável por sua flexibilidade e pluralidade; destacam-se alguns de seus aspectos positivos, mas aponta-se o perigo na importação de modelos e imagens

Este artigo discute o relacionamento entre a atividade comercial varejista e o espaço urbano, em sua mais recente versão. A análise da evolução da atividade comercial, através do tempo, e do fenômeno shopping center no mundo e, principalmente, em São Paulo, demonstra que as localizações estratégicas, como fator fundamental para o desenvolvimento das atividades varejistas, estão cedendo, cada vez mais, o seu lugar às estratégias dos negócios Esta constatação indica a necessidade de se repensar as teorias locacionais então vigentes, de forma a possibilitar um controle mais eficiente sobre o desenvolvimento urbano

A arquitetura de hospícios implantada no Brasil durante o século 19 corresponde a uma busca da modernização. Em sintonia com o surgimento desse programa arquitetônico na Europa e nos Estados Unidos, foi produto da compreensão da questão da alienação mental como uma patologia passível de tratamento e, por conseguinte, da possibilidade de definir um espaço específico para essa finalidade. O trabalho busca demonstrar a trajetória dessa preocupação no Brasil mediante a constatação do surgimento de hospícios no Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Porto Alegre, Belém e São Paulo, caracterizando um programa de amplitude até hoje pouco esclarecido

Discute-se a origem da arquitetura escolar oficial em São Paulo e seu processo evolutivo ao longo da Primeira República. Busca-se refletir sobre os aspectos criativos desta arquitetura mediante a análise das constribuições específicas de alguns arquitetos, cujas obras parecem contrapor-se à arquitetura eclética vista como uma produção acrítica e resultante de imitações irrefletidas de exemplos estrangeiros

The work’s fundamental concern has an ontological character: to sketch the problem of the primordial and autonomous significations of the architectural syntax elements. The work chooses one of these elements: the window. It starts from the historical approximation between the window and a section of the visual pyramid, an imaginary construction of the renaissantist perspective theory. The window, in the architectural language, implies in the acknowledgment of an essential ambiguity: the window must insert itself in an orderly manner into the wall's plan - a typical reasoning of the modénature - and at the same time relate itself with the image seen through it. beyond its own plan, putting in evidence the three-dimensionality, heritage of the renaissantist perspective, fundamented on the Euclidean space. To see the window or to see through the window are alternatives that are available both to the observer inside the building as much as to the external one. Double-faced text, the window's sintax deals with the relationship of both of these sides

Aborda-se a habitação dos indígenas guarani-mbya, estabelecendo alguns compromissos culturais, especialmente aqueles descobertos nas tradições rituais e mitológicas. O artigo procura dar alguns desdobramentos à característica cultural guarani, segundo a qual sua tradição ou modo de ser - teco - só pode se realizar dentro de uma espacialidade particular, no seu tecoa - ‘lugar onde vivemos segundo nossos costumes' (Meliá, 1988:104)

This paper is based in my D.Sc. research done at FAU/USP where was surveyed the technological innovations observed in the manufacturing industry and analised the contribution of CAD to improve the integration between design and manufacturing areas. The same subject is developped here for the construction industry, highlighting some applications of CAD in the archictectural project and its contribution to achieve an integrated design environment. The paper begins with the discussion on technology innovation in both, manufacturing industry and construction industry. The main differences are pointed and some concepts are addapted to architectural design. We finish the paper presenting some CAD applications in archictectural design specially its use as a tool for design retrieval and identifying some integration chains that can be implemented with the use of this technology

This study intends to make a comparison between the works of the w riter Jorge Luis Borges and of the architect Peter Eisenman. For this purpouse, there were selected "La casa de Asterión" a tale from Borges' book " El Aleph" and the "Guardiola House" a Peter Eisenman's project. The purpose is to look for an analogy between these tw o works. This idea came out from reading the criticals about Eisenman's works, which pointed out that some similiraty between the architect's thoughts and the w riter one's could be noticed. La casa de Asterion was chosen after passing through many "labyrinthic and abyssals'" texts (as stated Otilia Arantes)

This article presents the results of the application of a descriptive theory of the urban space, as proposed by Bill Hillier and colleagues (1984), to study two Brazilian cities: Porto Alegre and Recife. The concepts of the theory of the Social Logic o f Space (Hillier & Hanson, 1984), and its associated methods, are adopted to analyse the morphology of the central area of the two cities and its patterns of social use of the urban space. The study is also informed by the concepts of elem entary-m atrixand matrix-course, developed by Cannigia & Maffei (1981), as form ative elements of the urban tissue, over and above geometrical order

The historical and cultural building "Vila Penteado" located at St. Maranhão 88, is where the graduate course of Architecture and Urban Design of the São Paulo University takes place nowadays. Its maintenance conditions inspire caution, for example: recently it suffered the falling of part of its ceiling. The restoration of part of the interior, basically the paintings that where covered by white paint, showed the value of the São Paulo's Art Nouveau expression. In the discipline “Integrated Visual Images" under the responsibility of Profa Dra Élide Monzeglio, a group of students decided to make a campaign to move the academic community, public opinion and more specifically the businessman for the importance of gather efforts in accomplishing effective action towards the building restoration

This article aims to recover the figure and work of a French engineer who worked in the city of São Paulo in the last thirty years of the last century. Before Ramos de Azevedo, it was him who completely dominated, for a certain period of time, the official architeture implemented in the city of São Paulo, reaching from this point of view the condition of precursor of the famous paulista engineer

This work has a general aim - the urban process planning as a political activity, seen in its concrete manifestations in a small town on the southwest of Minas Gerais. It is called Tapira and it has had about 2.000 inhabitants, from 1975 to our days. The research aims not only to demonstrate the political planning, but also to discover some ways by which it shows up concretely, emphasizing the popular reactions to w hat has been decided and put into practice by government. In disclosing the socio-political, economical and spacial problems ocurred at Tapira I w ill be able to known much better the up-to-date historic process in Brazil

Neste artigo procuramos acompanhar as representações de plano de extensão e planta da cidade, pelas quais a engenharia sanitária estabeleceu os seus procedimentos no âmbito do urbanismo. Acompanhamos as discussões do Recife entre os anos 10 e 20, através do discurso de engenheiros como Moraes Rego, Saturnino de Brito, José Estelita e Paulo Guedes, que, atraídos pelo debate internacional, avançaram na definição de um campo separado de preocupações. Ainda que comprometidos com a eugenia e a paisagem, estes engenheiros, em suas pretensões científicas e formulações conceituais, gradualmente se afastam do campo da medicina e da arte. Os liames desse processo, exemplarmente resumidos em um tal traçado sanitário da cidade, podem ser entrevistos na analogia do corpo urbano, bem como na ligação orgânica entre solo, subsolo e superfície, tanto quanto entre a planta e o plano

This work tries to stablish a stage design definition as exclusive of the scenic environment planning of theatre activity. We verify the existence of a double space, part of it physical and efficient and part an immaginary product of complicity. Through scenic action significative elements analysis we can stablish a stage-public relationship, in an immaginary field. Then w e verify in which way this kind of environment intervenes into physical space, both urban or inside a building. In the sequence we describe a dramatic intervention (just promoted by color lighting) into an architectural place known by the public, and the public reaction facing it

In a previous essay on perspective, we described a device simple than those that are traditionally attributed to Brunelleschi. W ith this simple device we showed that it is possible to deduce the laws of the florentine perspective from images of plane mirrors. In this paper we present the inverse path: we deduce geometrically, from the books of Descartes and Huygens, the image of objects in the plane mirror. We demonstrate in this way, that the exact perspective is a necessary step between the medieval and modern optics

This paper studies the building of public health facilities in the city and in the region of Campinas as part of the social, economical and political process that transforms society permanently. This means that the development of these towns, like every one of their architectural and urbanistical elements, shows us the material face of those processes. The public health queries and their spaces also appear as one of these materialities. In complementary way, another problem appears in this study: the repercussions the urban structurituration on the regional design process. Based on these assumptions part of the city and the region of Campinas urban history, is related, describing the organization of its health system from 1850 until 1970
