Railroad workshops and deposits: identification and analysis of some São Paulo railroad companies (1867-1930)

The article discusses the conception and the recent partial demolition of the Toulouse-Le Mirail project, designed by the French office Candilis-Josic-Woods, relating it to the postwar period and to themes that emerged during discussions and meetings of Team 10. The meeting of Royaumont in 1962 is studied. In such occasion the project was presented by Georges Candilis and it was criticized for its large scale, revealing the position of authors such as Jaap Bakema, José Antonio Coderch, Fernando Távora and André Schimmerling, all present at the meeting. The method combines bibliographic research, investigation into Team 10 archives belonging to the collection of the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, as well as an empirical component with a site visit to the work. As a result, it is questioned to what extent the architectonic and urban values related to the project can be reinterpreted to support new reflections consistent with the reality of the interventions in large-scale housing settlements.
The construction of an alterity perspective and the social role of design through the course "design called into question"
The following paper aims to show the social impact that the course Design Called Into Question, given at the Design Graduate Program at the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP) by PhD Professor Maria Cecilia Loschiavo dos Santos, has raised in the development of Master and PhD researches and also in research projects that aim to participate at the selection process of the graduate program, through the construction of an alterity perspective and concerning the relevance given into the social role of design, during discussions and debates in class. This paper, written by students that attended this course in the past, and which had developed their own research projects in the graduate program of design, intends to discuss the selected bibliography, with mention to seminars and debates that took place in class, to demonstrate how this course has been helping to recognize the social role of design in different research topics, by deconstructing, at the same time, concepts and social issues related to this field, focusing the appreciation and recognition of the other, for whom it is intended the research.

A errância como potência em Dom Quixote
From Don Quixote's refusal to seek courts or cities, made explicit in a dialogue with Sancho Panza in the twentieth-first chapter of the first part of Cervantes's book, this article reflects on his wandering, as a perambulation in the fields, but also as a non-function-oriented behavior and as an identity in constant invention. This reflection, with the various philosophical and literary references that it raises, finds not a peculiarity of the knight from la Mancha, but a permanent tension in our culture, proposing Don Quixote as a reversion of the way we are used to read it.
This paper explores the outcomes of the Americanization of mid-twentieth century Brazilian society in the planning field. Focusing on the layout of new towns built in the pioneering agricultural hinterlands it examines which American ideas contributed to the construction of new urban forms in Brazil. By analysing the layout and sociocultural context of Goiânia – GO (1936), Angélica – MS (1954), and Medicilândia and Rurópolis – PA (1972), this paper states that the American neighbourhood unit helped to materialize the local aspiration for modernization and development, thus depicted by the American way of life. The configuration of the neighbourhood unit in the layout of those new towns unveils appropriation and adaptation of the American planning idea; and reveals that the Americanization process overlapped the consolidation of the rationalist/functionalist urbanism hegemony, and was mistaken for it.
Da inconstância da fortuna. A teoria e a metodologia do restauro em contexto Europeu
The attribution of value to certain vestiges of the past, in Western Europe, found itself directly correlated with the notion of authenticity and progressively tended to the study of the object and later to the conservation of its matter, understood as a material witness in perpetual transformation and the only guarantee to any other possibility of interpretation and conservative intent. This text begins by exploring some historical and conceptual aspects of restoration and the emergence and development of heritage’s tutelage, as it is understood today in Europe, going through several theoretical contributions, in order to delineate significant variations of the theoretical support and the correlated methodologies. It does not revert to the objectives of this synthetic “approach to restoration”, the exhaustive examination of its origins and patrimonial practices in the European context – literature in this field is extensive and current – only evoke some decisive momentsin the evolution of its theoretical and practical organization. The format of the text imposes a limited choice of actors and texts, necessarily arbitrary.

São Paulo's green areas production policy: historical and projectual analysis
From the 20th century onwards, the City Administration of São Paulo began to formulate plans that guided the policy for public green areas. In this article we discuss the changes observed in two different experiences that occurred respectively in 1974 and 2014. The analysis here is divided into two perspectives: 1. historical indicators, through a review of official documents; and 2. design indicators, which examine the design practices of the architects involved in each experiment analyzed. To do so, a description is provided on how the indicators were formulated, as well as their use in this analysis. The results show a historical trend of progressive emphasis on environmental conservation and preservation and of diminishing the importance of the social role of parks and urban green areas, leading to significant changes in the role of architectural design for urban free areas.

Laboratory of ideas: comparative study of urban requalification proposals for the harbour areas of Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Vitória (ES)
This article aims to discuss the resumption process of port areas of contemporary Brazilian cities through the most recent urban requalification projects and to identify reasons why these projects are implemented or shelved. Studies of the proposals were developed for the harbour areas of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Porto Maravilha, and Vitória (ES), Portal Sul, in order to analyze the current perspectives and the panoramas of implementation of urban interventions. The criterion of analysis is the comparison and identification of points in common and divergent and the methodology consists in the study of reference cases electing real examples to constitute references in the concrete construction of the object of knowledge. The comparative method allows to establish and test the communication between the interlocutors and, for that, were considered beyond the urban and propositional context, the administrative structures, the actors involved and the normative frameworks. The investigation is justified not only by the originality of the dialogue established between the cases but also by the importance of discussing the ballast on which large urban projects are or are not undertaken in the center of Brazilian metropolitan regions.

The evolution process of the architecture in downtown São Paulo

The article presents didactic experience that articulated other methodologies and disciplines for socio-territorial reading in slums of Sao Paulo. The postgraduate discipline sought to understand the urban and social dynamics of the São Remo slum in Sao Paulo, relating its historical formation and current reality. Faced with the transformations of the social and urban relations of the Sao Paulo slums in the last 20 years, the need to experiment with other didactic practices of reading and understanding is justified. The formation of researchers and designers suitable for other forms of reading led us to study the San Remo slum, associating theoretical research with the experience in the community. The results, synthesized in cartographies and diagrams, allowed clear access to the complex historical, territorial and social data of the slum and were ordered on a digital platform (site) to socialize the knowledge beyond the academic scope. We conclude that the analysis of the precarious areas needs an extended field of readings and reflections capable of contemplating the complexity of the place and its inhabitants, breaking the stigma that separates the understanding of the city in the life of precarious neighborhoods.

Levantamento Arquitetônico: experiência didática integrada na FAUUSP
This text addresses the didactic activities developed in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo in July 2018 related to the restoration and the metric survey. Within the framework of the academic cooperation agreements with the Sapienza Università di Roma. The activities involved undergraduate and postgraduate courses and a scientific event open to a wider audience. The course presented the notion of restoration today, debating questions of method and highlighting the necessary interrelations of the restoration – understood as a disciplinary field that has autonomy, but is not isolated, since it requires the articulation of several fields – withother areas of knowledge and with the architectural design. The discussions were focused on questions of method and the interface History – Architectural Survey – Restoration (design). The object of study, to deepen the theme and to offer the possibility of experiencing in practice some of the procedures, was the FAU-Maranhão building.
