Palácio Azurara : museu de artes decorativas portuguesas : azulejos e restauros

We must present, the results obtained so far, in the research work, directed to the Project with the register of thesis named, Azurara Palace-Museum of Portuguese Decorative Arts: Tiles and Restorations. In terms of historical contextualization and with a view to updating the cataloguing and inventory azulejar, which focuses on datable tiles from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century, namely the panels of figurative typology depicting scenes of the New Testament related to the "Birth of Christ" and "Visitation", applied in the atrium of the palace at the time of purchase of the building, celebrated in 1947, and the panels of the seventeenth century, the result of an order from the House of Unhão, to the Palace to the post of the Career in Santarem, in the 3rd quarter of the seventeenth century, and in the nineteenth century will have been transferred to Quinta dos Chavões, belonging to the same family, and placed on a murete, of the noble floor, and in 1958 comes to the Ricardo Espirito Santo Silva Foundation and were applied in the Drawing Room, today called the Hall of Platitudes. We consider it essential to study the process of works, restorations and adaptations in the building, once required by owners, namely: Bernardo Luís da Câmara Sotomaior, who lived in the palace at the time of the earthquake of 1755; João Salter de Mendonça (1st Viscount of Azurara) as owner from 1789 to 1819, and his son, as the same name (2nd Viscount of Azurara) in a later period; Pedro da Cunha who lived in the palace in the middle of the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The inventory and cataloguing of the azulejar collection will be recorded on the Az-Infinitum platform, in the future and finally, it is intended to carry out the Catalog of the Azulejar Collection, of the Museum of Portuguese Decorative Arts. It is intended to start the registration and analysis of chemical and morphological during interventions such as the continuation of studies to this to the needs of conservation and restoration interventions, and this project included the intervention of the panel of "Visitation" and "Nativity"

This dissertation carried out in the scope of the Master in Museology and Museography presents an analytical but also comparative study, with the proper theoretical foundation, of two Museums dedicated to the presentation, preservation and valorization of the complete work of the couturier Yves Saint Laurent. The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, in the former home of the maison de couture, and the musée Yves Saint Laurent marrakech, in a place that inspired him so much, are the greatest testimony of the work he was so passionate about for over forty years. They deserve our attention for the rarity of the existence of museums dedicated to a couturier. After an indispensable chapter of biographical contextualization of the dressmaker that goes through the most important moments and some episodes of his life that help to better understand the subsequent analysis of the two institutions, the case studies are finally presented. Each institution corresponds to a subchapter, this division allows a parallel analysis of several dimensions of the two institutions, such as the architecture, the creation of the institutions, their locations, their exhibition spaces, their missions, the graphic identities and the preservation of the collection. There is always a comparison between the two institutions. A detailed analysis and in-depth reflection is thus presented of these two complementary Museums, linked by the figure of Yves Saint Laurent and by the collection they preserve and present in a unique way

O jogo do parêntesis : interações e interposições na pintura

The present work project, entitled The Game of Parenthesis: Interactions and Interpositions in Painting, intends to reflect around two aspects that were constitutional pillars of my work in painting in the last two years: interactions and interpositions. From its totality (that always has as a background, the notion of interactions and interpositions in painting), the first part focuses more directly around a game idea: the game as interaction between elements. In this first part, I discourse about the act of painting as analogous to the act of playing (Playing with Painting) and about a pictorial process that understands painting as a game field in which confrontation occurs and establish themselves (Painting Games). I also pass through matters as repetition in painting, the use of diptychs and other reflections about the group Chessboards. The second part of this work project introduces, in a more vivid way, the notion of interpositions in painting. It is evidenced through the text Between Parenthesis that, similar to the first part, it conducts to reflections upon two painting groups: Envelopes and Whispers. In Envelopes, subjects such as materiality in painting, abstraction in painting and the choice to name abstract paintings with figurative titles are presented. In Whispers, reflections that emerge from painting and are involved with matters of similarity and difference, appearance and essence, judgment, inclusion, mutability, reconfiguration and perspective are investigated. The third part of this work project concentrates in a text proposing a possible structural relation between painting and verbal language, resulting from the body of work that has been consolidating since and some of my perceptions after reading through Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations. The presentation of the last group of paintings (Jottings) closes the work

Jesus, apocalyptic prophet or mythologoumenon?

Was Jesus of Nazareth a historical figure? When performing a horizontal reading of the Canonical Gospels, the contradictions that surface while comparing their narratives are significant. If we cannot know for sure what is the true history of Jesus, how can we even be sure that he ever existed? This thesis aims to offer an exploration of the scholarly views of the historicity of Jesus of Nazareth. Starting from a base of ten New Testament scholars, this work seeks to understand the reconstruction of the traditions of Jesus that are more likely to go back to the period Jesus supposedly lived. I will also try to understand if the story of Jesus is more likely to be part of history, to be a legend, or to be a body of myths with little connection to reality. Following said analysis, I examine some of the problems related to the life of Jesus to which we do not yet have an answer or whose answers are not satisfactory. Lastly, I gather a collection of arguments for and against the idea of Jesus as a character of history, as a legendary figure, and as a mythological being.

Ventricular arrhythmia risk stratification in patients with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot

Determinants of antenatal care utilization – contacts and screenings – in São Tome e Principe: a hospital-based cross-sectional study

Background: Sao Tome & Principe (STP) has a high peri-neonatal mortality rate and access to high-quality care before childbirth has been described as one of the most effective means of reducing it. The country has a gap in the coverage-content of antenatal care (ANC) services that must be addressed to better allocate resources to ultimately improve maternal and neonatal health. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the determinants for adequate ANC utilization considering the number and timing of ANC contacts and screening completion. Methods: A hospital based cross-sectional study was undertaken among women admitted for delivery at Hospital Dr. Ayres de Menezes (HAM). Data were abstracted from ANC pregnancy cards and from a structured face-to-face interviewer-administered questionnaire. ANC utilization was classified as partial vs adequate. Adequate ANC utilization was defined as having ANC 4 or more contacts, first trimester enrolment plus one or more hemoglobin tests, urine, and ultrasound. The collected data were entered into QuickTapSurvey and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify determinants of adequate ANC utilization at P-value < 0.05. Results: A total of 445 mothers were included with a mean age of 26.6 ± 7.1, an adequate ANC utilization was identified in 213 (47.9%; 95% CI: 43.3-52.5) and a partial ANC utilization in 232 (52.1%; 95% CI: 47.5-56.7). Age 20-34 [AOR 2.27 (95% CI: 1.28-4.04), p = 0.005] and age above 35 [AOR 2.5 (95% CI: 1.21-5.20), p = 0.013] when comparing with women aged 14-19 years, urban residence [AOR 1.98 (95% CI: 1.28-3.06), p < 0.002], and planned pregnancy [AOR 2.67 (95% CI: 1.6-4.2), p < 0.001] were the determinants of adequate ANC utilization. Conclusion: Less than half of the pregnant women had adequate ANC utilization. Maternal age, residence and type of pregnancy planning were the determinants for adequate ANC utilization. Stakeholders should focus on raising awareness of the importance of ANC screening and engaging more vulnerable women in earlier utilization of family planning services and choosing a pregnancy plan, as a key strategy to improve neonatal health outcomes in STP.

This dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first part, we propose the term “Upcycling Sculpture”, which we use to describe a selection of sculptures made in the twentieth and twenty first centuries, and made from materials that are mostly discarded or acquired second hand. We start from the premise that the sculptor, when integrating discarded materials and objects in his works, gives them artistic value, thus proceeding to their upcycling through sculpture and not only to their recycling. Here, in order to propose a genealogy of this new sculptural genre, the concepts of the artistic sphere of assemblage, junk art, and recycling art are compared with the concept of upcycling sculpture. This is followed by a selection of examples of sculptures made using these materials considering them as belonging to a precursor and an encourager of this type of sculpture. We consider how many sculptors have used these as raw material, sometimes preserving their meaning by bringing them into the work of art, sometimes for the purpose of artistic expression. We further expose, how these materials and objects are also used to materialise interactive sculptures, performative sculptures, sculptures designed for public space, sculptures as political contestation, participatory sculptures, or sculptures that make use of these materials with awareness of the era of ecological crisis that currently presents itself. In the second part of this dissertation, some of the sculptural works developed during the research are presented. They are based on the appropriation of materials and objects found on the street, discarded by the faculty's workshops, or provided by a public entity

Asymptomatic chronic red eye: a surgical technique case report

Introduction and importance: Ocular Surface Squamous-cell Neoplasia (OSSN) is an infrequent diagnosis whose clinical suspicion assumes great importance and should not be overlooked. The following case-report aims to describe the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with OSSN whose complaints were mild in comparison to the severity of the disease. The chosen surgical technique was paramount for a disease-free outcome while minimizing the scarring effects of surgical removal. Case presentation: Patient presented mild discomfort right eye and painless persistent hyperaemia. Slit-lamp observation showed a clear diagnosis and lesion's extent evaluated through multimodal imaging. After surgical excision the patient underwent topical ocular treatment with mitomycin-C for a higher margin of safety even before the pathology results were available. Discussion: Ancillary exam technology improvement has allowed a higher margin of safety while determining the extent of OSSN lesions. In the absence of clear diagnostic criteria and guidelines, clinical reasoning and OSSN awareness are critical for timely diagnosis and treatment, as several treatment options are available, allowing an increasing number of patients to be treated non-invasively. In this case-report, we highlight the importance of early-recognition and the reasoning for choosing a combined treatment option with a higher margin of safety. Conclusion: Early recognition and prompt treatment of OSSN lesions is of paramount importance to avoid ocular invasiveness and potentially preclude both ocular and systemic complication. The choice of a combined surgical and medical approach may provide a higher margin of safety for suitable cases. This patient is currently disease-free at 6-month follow-up.

Who’s that girl? A matter of gender in Statius’ Silvae 4,8

Statius’ Silvae 4,8 is a genethliakon addressed to Julius Menecrates, son-in-law of Pollius Felix, on the occasion of the birth of his third child, whose gender is never overtly disclosed. The subtlety of Statius’ allusions to the infants – two boys and a girl –, combined with a reference to grandchildren of Pollius at Silvae 3,1, has fostered disparate theories regarding the gender of the newborn. Contradicting the more recent readers, I revive an old interpretation of Silvae 4,8 according to which the newborn is the girl, while eliminating an apparent obstacle to this hypothesis.

Exile and contract: journeys of the mozambicans to S. Tomé and Príncipe (1940 to 1960)

Exile and Contract: Journeys of the Mozambicans to S. Tomé and Príncipe (1940 to 1960), based mainly on documentation from the Historical Archive of Maputo, deals with the migration of Mozambicans to São Tomé and Príncipe, especially between 1947 and 1961. The more or less coercive nature of this migration varied due to the correlation of forces between the political instances, in Portugal and Mozambique, and the plantation owners, who demanded the use of the hired labour force to maintain labour relations on the plantations. On a chronological level, a change occurred in the mid-1950s. Until then, among the migrants there were some individuals in no way labelled as slaves or undesirables, anyway there were also other individuals which were labelled as such to fill the labour contingent. In the second half of the 1950’s, when the banishment of undesirables almost ended, there was a tendency towards a greater social and cultural homogeneity of migrants, most of whom were recruited in Northern Mozambique, certainly less as a result of individual will than of agreements on the destiny of the subjects. Among the social implications of migration, it should be highlighted the re-establishment of family ties, which induced the migration of Cape Verdeans women, with their Mozambicans roça's partners, to Mozambique. The political consequences of migration from Mozambique to the islands were less obvious: as centripetal universes, the roças made it difficult to affirm the conscience of the servants, whose political aversion to the colonists, when it existed, was often based on their religious conscience. It is not wrong to say that the individuals, recruited or hired, in the south and north of the colony, returned from São Tomé and Príncipe with an increased feeling of being Mozambicans.

Economic forecasts and executive approval

This research note investigates how different sources of economic information affected citizens’ approval of the government in Portugal from 2001 to 2018. It compares the predictive power of the revised and most accurate data on GDP growth with other economic indicators that were available to the public at the time, such as the first estimates of recent growth and the forecasts of future growth. It finds that approval is best predicted by information about forecasted growth for the current year. These results provide further indirect evidence that the state of the economy, as it plays out directly in people’s lives and experiences, may be less consequential for evaluations of the government than the mediated information about it that is conveyed to the public.

Space and landscape are of utmost importance in Statian poetics in the Silvae. I focus on book 4 to illustrate one of the functions of space in the Silvae, that of lending structural coherence to the book, and to discuss two passages of Silva 4.4 in which space and landscape are crucial to the understanding of the poem (51-55, 78-85).

Communicating the Urban Experience through Biosensing: A Participatory Approach

Advances in biosensing technologies have led to the commercialization of novel lightweight wearable devices, which have been praised by urban scholars for offering the possibility to quantify emotions in real-world settings, something that had proven to be very challenging until now. Although many studies mix biosensing with qualitative methods to provide a clearer picture of what physiological data might mean in terms of emotions, there has been little exploration of how people interpret their own biodata. Following calls for greater attention to participation in biosensing studies, this article explores the nuances of the interpretation of biodata by research participants. Drawing on the findings of a study in which participants were invited to reflect on and discuss their own biodata during and after a walk in a high street in Lisbon, we show how exposing participants to biodata creates moments of bounded interference that foster in-depth reflection about the urban experience. With this in mind, we discuss how bounded interference can be a generative driver for more detailed discussions about spatial experiences.

Limited host availability disrupts the genetic correlation between virulence and transmission

Virulence is expected to be linked to parasite fitness via transmission. However, it is not clear whether this relationship is genetically determined, nor if it differs when transmission occurs continuously during, or only at the end of, the infection period. Here, we used inbred lines of the macroparasitic spider mite Tetranychus urticae to disentangle genetic vs. nongenetic correlations among traits, while varying parasite density and opportunities for transmission. A positive genetic correlation between virulence and the number of transmitting stages produced was found under continuous transmission. However, if transmission occurred only at the end of the infection period, this genetic correlation disappeared. Instead, we observed a negative relationship between virulence and the num ber of transmitting stages, driven by density dependence. Thus, within-host density dependence caused by reduced opportunities for transmission may hamper selection for higher virulence, providing a novel explanation as to why limited host availability leads to lower virulence

Multiple mating rescues offspring sex ratio but not productivity in a haplodiploid exposed to developmental heat stress

Reproduction is generally more sensitive to high temperatures than survival and arguably a better predictor of the response of populations to climate change than survival estimates. Still, how temperature simultaneously impacts male and female reproductive success, the mating system and the operational sex ratio remains an open question. Here, we addressed how a sublethal high temperature affects the reproductive system of the haplodiploid spider mite Tetranychus urticae. Males and females maintained at 25 or 36°C during development were paired and the fertility of both sexes, their mating and remating eagerness, and the paternity of the offspring of females with different mating histories were measured. Female and male fertility decreased at 36°C compared to 25°C, resulting in lower offspring production and a more male-biased sex ratio, respectively, because of haplodiploidy. However, when either heat-stressed females or females that mated with heat-stressed males remated, there was a shift in paternity share, with more than one male contributing to the offspring. This was accompanied by reduced mating eagerness in pairs with partially sterile males and increased remating eagerness in pairs in which at least one sex was partially sterile in the first mating. The observed temperature-induced changes in female remating eagerness and sperm use allowed restoring the offspring sex ratio, by increasing the proportion of fertilized offspring, but did not lead to the recovery of offspring number. The temperature-induced changes in the mating behaviour and mating system should alter the interactions within and between the sexes, and with it the strength of sexual selection and sexual conflict in this species. Whether such changes are sufficient to prevent population extinction, despite the inability to recover offspring number, remains an open question.
