Critique and recognition: the struggle for identity in media culture
This article analyzes the controversial interactions about the film Vazante and the play Gisberta, in which identitary groups related to black and transsexual people, respectively, criticized the way they were represented in those fictions. From the theory of recognition by Axel Honneth, it aims to understand the emergence of those forms of social struggle in media culture. This study analyzes the collective semantics and the way it expresses the feelings of injustice related to the narratives. The struggle highlights different claims, which refer to both the cultural inclusion and the autonomy of fiction and propose relations between narrative and society that challenge the current media criticism.

Ben Highmore: ‘The everyday is always a question, a problem’
In this interview with Ben Highmore, Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, we discuss the rise of Everyday Life Studies, its connection to Cultural Studies, and its implications for academic research. Professor Highmore has published extensively on the topic of everyday life from an array of perspectives, ranging from the tradition of critique of everyday life to material culture as well as the influence of feelings and aesthetics in how we experience the world. The supersession of the idea that the everyday is a monolithic phenomenon, available for scientific scrutiny, is central to Professor Highmore’s argument that the everyday is, accordingly, always an inquiry into certain aspects of concrete existence.
In the mood, by the book: the aesthetics of the chanchada genre through music and fashion

Critique of/in the media: the aim for metacritical approaches

The transmedia dynamics of fake news by the pragmatic conception of truth
The spreading of fake news about the trial of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on January, 2018 is examined here according to the pragmatic conception of truth proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914). Through collecting in online social networks, the collective effort to establish competing beliefs was observed, according to Peircean methods of tenacity and authority. The communicational process analyzed, characterized as transmedia activism, was driven by the mediation of hashtags that referred to political polarization and the posts attributed to celebrities. It is concluded that the dispute for the semiotic value of truth fostered the transmedia expansion of fake content and, paradoxically, verified news.

Refeudalisation revisited: destruction of deliberative democracy
Donald Trump’s election as American President and the successful referendum campaign to exit the European Union in Britain have prompted renewed interest in the challenges posed to deliberative democracy by right-wing populism. This paper returns to the research on authoritarianism developed by the Frankfurt School in Germany and the United States, particularly to their emphasis on the performative construction of appeals, and to Jürgen Habermas’ later characterisation of the translation of citizens into spectating subjects as a refeudalisation of the public sphere, and argues that these analyses continue to provide indispensable resources for understanding contemporary developments.

Big data: shaping knowledge, shaping everyday life
Contemporary culture is a perverse assembly, as it seeks to liberate the selfish subject to the world of the sensitive and the drive. In the 20th century an increasing liberation of the drives occurred, connecting the neurotic consumer and the puritan perverse. The perversion is sought, but remaining clean, demanding strong musical beatings and varied substances varying between the postmodern neurotic consumer and the puritan perverse to this end. The result is a society in which everyone internalizes the law of the market to satisfy the drives, disconnecting the subject function. To understand the transformations of communication culture of the perverse city, a psychoanalytic theory of the drives and passions is necessary.
Contranarrativas fílmicas Guarani Mbya: atos decoloniais de desobediência institucional no cinema indígena
This study analyzes the documentary production of the Guarani Mbya Cinema Collective. By linking film studies with post-colonial criticism, our aim is to understand how indigenous filmmakers, insofar as they appropriate audiovisual registers about themselves, problematize the official versions and stereotypes about their history. From a decolonialist theoretical framework, we identify an imagery regime that configures acts of film and historical disobedience, besides unveiling the colonial character of the power, knowledge and essence surrounding the Guarani people. We also identified metalinguistic processes that mix filmic and historical spaces, create an intricate network between the films and force this cinema to move beyond its borders.
In the mediatization scenery, there is a complexification of the social relations, crossed by the media logic that convenes memories and transforms the notion of reference, potentializing the fixation of images into shadows. In our view, mediatized images present a triple condition: a) they affect the collective and the consolidation or not of social imaginary; b) they emerge from a dispute for the attribution of value to the visible, and c) they imply the development of technical domains and appropriations. In this article we discuss the circulation of what transits on the media imaginary linked to the attack to Charlie Hebdo magazine from the 2015 coverage and its intervals until 2018. As theoretical contributions, we mobilize Warburg and Didi-Huberman, as well as the specific contributions from mediatization, especially circulation and its phagic movements
The critical and invisible epistemology of communication
This review aims to discuss the precepts of a possible “political epistemology of communication” as suggested by Lucrécia D’Alessio Ferrara in her book A Comunicação que não vemos, considering the imponderability of the communication processes built in extremely complex cultural environments and that are not always clear. To do so, it elucidates how the author pervades the thoughts of a few authors in the field of communication in order to indicate different possibilities of knowledge production, which are guided by doubt and by the elaboration of interferences, and the political implications of this process. Finally, it points out the possibilities of studying the political exercise of a city through such epistemological approach.

The purpose of this article is to present an alternative approach to the image sciences, as yet little explored, which work from the perspective of the body. We will start from the bioanthropological premise that the body claims for body, and will seek to think about the image based on Hans Belting’s image anthropology, mainly in relation to the theoretical triangulation of image, media and body, alongside Dietmar Kamper’s sociology of the body, whose critical diagnosis of current media culture and of its excessive self-referentiality demonstrates an unwanted immanence of the imaginary. We will also include those authors who have contributed to the Kamperian diagnosis: Vilém Flusser, Günther Anders, Jean Baudrillard, Byung-Chul Han and Christoph Wulf.

Gameplay as an effect of tuning in a ludic attunement: a phenomenological approach to Ingress

Television beyond itself in Latin America
Television in Latin America continues to be an important medium for the population; politics, history, the market, and especially the culture and its audiences keep television alive. In spite of the fact that millennials enjoy television from several screens, television contents remain as a reference in everybody’s audiovisual experiences. With changes in its reception, production, programming, and business models, television booms, instead of disappearing, amplifying itself into the televisual medium, keeping itself as a multicultural experience, and as a unique opportunity for its audiences’ reinvention of themselves.

Mediated interaction in the digital age
