A proposta deste artigo é refletir sobre como o conceito de acontecimento pode ser orientador e/ou operador metodológico na área da Comunicação. Para isso, começamos apresentando a noção pragmatista de acontecimento. Depois, destacamos alguns vieses analíticos: o poder hermenêutico do acontecimento para busca de sentidos em jogos de temporalidades e enquadramentos; a passibilidade do acontecimento para análise de experiências, afetações e configuração de públicos; a dupla vida do acontecimento para investigar as dimensões existenciais e simbólicas de um fenômeno; a espetacularização para estudos de acontecimentos midiáticos; e a individualização do acontecimento para interpretar suas particularidades e o contexto social que faz emergir.

Neste artigo, analisa-se a técnica aplicada à produção de valores monetários para vídeos de música hospedados no YouTube à luz da teoria da lógica social de derivativo. Partindo do imbróglio sobre transferência de valor (value gap), a hipótese do trabalho é que o método utilizado para a criação de valor para vídeos digitais toma emprestadas técnicas desenvolvidas no mercado de derivativo. Esse fenômeno resulta na geração de valores monetários variáveis, o que acarreta, por seu turno, graves consequências para a organização social do mercado fonográfico na era digital.

This essay outlines some aspects of subjectivity and otherness in Communication Research. It argues that, in Communication Research, subjectivity is the prime research condition, and the relationship with the otherness preceds any epistemological action. Historically, from a Positivist point of view, subjectivity is an obstacle for scientific research, as it would be the place for affects and emotions that disturbs the rational evaluation of anything. However, distinguished epistemologists such as Bachelard and Morin have argued that subjectivity is a condition of scientific knowledge, as there is no ‘objective’ knowledge outside the conditions of knowing.

A trajetória de termos como imprensa alternativa, comunicação alternativa e jornalismo alternativo tem sido objeto de estudos integrantes de uma rede de sentidos formadora de uma narratividade que pode ser retraçada pela análise discursiva. Com base no levantamento de teses e dissertações disponíveis na biblioteca digital do Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência Tecnologia, este artigo sintetiza a investigação realizada para compreender como se formam conceitos, sentidos e narrativas na pesquisa acadêmica sobre essa temática. A análise mostra que a Ditadura Civil-Militar (1964-1985) é um marco para o estabelecimento dessa narrativa; porém, a continuidade desse imaginário é pouco explorada depois do período. Emerge então o interesse por uma comunicação alternativa de escopo mais amplo, relacionada à comunicação popular.  

The typical way in which contemporary society, associated with neoliberalism, is managed can be characterized as algorithmic governance. Social networks like Facebook are taken as a model for the operation of this type of governance. To comprehend its dynamics, algorithmic governance is examined in three fundamental dimensions. The first is the relational dimension: the individual is fragmented in his digital traces, which are recombined in multiple relationships. From there, the vectorial dimension unfolds: these relationships are oriented, capturing trends and embedding projections about the future. Finally, this orientation originates the agential dimension, playing the roles of amplifying the affinities and containing the differences.

This article discusses how the concept of social class was studied in communication research between the 1970s and 1980s, highlighting a trajectory of the concept from pioneering studies, with a focus on Brazilian research and on understanding their theoretical and epistemological meanings and considering positive and negative aspects. On the one hand, there are works close to the political economy of communication, Marxism and popular communication. On the other, there is the emergence of cultural and reception studies, which emphasize symbolic issues and the relation of the subjects of different classes with the media. In addition, there are studies focusing on journalism and public relations. Thus, this article shows the relevance of studying classes and class struggles in communication.

The magazine Versus, published in São Paulo from 1975 to 1979, started as a formally and thematically innovative project, conceived by Marcos Faerman and collaborators, using culture as a form of action and adopting Latin America as its main focus. Versus conquered a distinctive space in the Brazilian cultural milieu, occupying an outstanding place among alternative publications. Starting from a brief review of the alternative press in the 1970’s, this article aims at analyzing the trajectory of Versus, which began with an innovative cultural viewpoint on the place occupied by Brazil in Latin America and the pursuit of a Latin American unity and identity, and later headed for a gradual political instrumentalization that put an end to its existence.

Renato Ortiz é, certamente, um dos mais influentes pensadores das ciências sociais do país e um de nossos intelectuais mais reconhecidos internacionalmente. Alguns de seus livros como Cultura Brasileira e Identidade Nacional (São Paulo: Brasiliense, 1985), A Moderna Tradição Brasileira (São Paulo: Brasiliense, 1988) e Mundialização e Cultura (São Paulo: Brasiliense, 1994), tornaram-se “novos clássicos” das ciências sociais do país e referências praticamente obrigatórias em estudos sobre uma ampla gama de temas da área de comunicação.

The article shows how, even though Media Production Analysis (MPA) has mostly neglected class, it might be fruitfully adapted to explain inadequate media representations of the working class, as long as it draws upon 1) an understanding of political-economic and policy factors beyond the situational contexts that might be observed, or discovered through interviews; 2) an attention to how subjective experiences of class shape production, via combination of Bourdieu’s concept of habitus with Erik Olin Wright’s recognition of “contradictory class locations;” 3) attention to the changing political status of the working class, and how this might shape production and representation.

Audience studies and production studies have had largely separate trajectories in research, despite their shared grounded theory agendas and research methods. Drawing on a larger ethnography of media audiences and producers, this article shows how the human subjects of audience studies and production studies might be studied together to reveal the power relations involved in mass media production processes. In this particular case study, fans and extras for the television series Treme (2010-2013) shared a discourse around the place of viewing and making which strove to articulate a common culture despite the real hierarchical barriers between audiences and production personnel.

Este artigo é sobre experienciar imagens como processo imagético interativo, como apontado por Bergson no livro Matéria e Memória, por meio de um aspecto dúbio do retrato fotográfico, em termos da sua recepção repudiada no espaço público. Apresentamos uma série de fotografias de quatro cidades latino-americanas que retratam rostos desfigurados intencionalmente. Recorrendo aos estudos de Deleuze, Bergson, Benjamin e Barthes, apontamos essas fotografias como testemunho documental de diferentes reações. As fotografias nos incitam a ir além do que os rostos desfigurados significam como signos icônicos, para serem vistas como indícios da interação dinâmica entre os retratos e os agentes desfigurantes anônimos, como uma imagem.

This article analyzes testimonies about Jornal do Brasil and its cultural supplement, “Caderno B”, produced and reproduced in different circumstances, over the last decades. For this, we mobilize the concept of nostalgia, which is a specific type of memory, characterized by a certain manner of appropriating the past. This nostalgic memory of media professionals who remember tell us of the present, of the current context of remembrance, and of the current moment in Brazilian journalism. It also tells us about the place that JB occupied as an institution in press history, as a movement of appreciation and idealization of the past - which sustains a mythical aurea as well as the importance of the newspaper for the many professionals who worked for it. The analysis points out that what is valued from the past is a specific way of doing journalism, anchored in a series of precepts and values that are currently under scrutiny.

O artigo investiga a ética nas famílias contemporâneas a partir das contribuições do pensamento de Emmanuel Lévinas, utilizando como suporte a análise do filme Boyhood – da infância à juventude, de 2014. Apresenta como problema de partida as mudanças experimentadas nas sociedades contemporâneas, principalmente no que diz respeito às relações de confiança, com alterações nas experiências de tempo e espaço, e na perspectiva de administração da vida. O filme Boyhood permite visualizar momentos de reprodução dos esquemas sociais mais abrangentes reiterados pela família, bem como os momentos de impugnação destes mesmos esquemas, apresentando um sentido ético tal como preconizado por Lévinas.

Text about the social participation enhanced by online media and networks. The objective is to reflect on the appropriation of cyberspace by popular social movements, as well as paying attention to the contrapositions of the role of online media and networks and their potentiality in the mobilizing articulation. The study starts from a bibliographical research to briefly situate aspects of the theoretical debate on technologies and the internet, and then to reflect on some of the social practices carried out in the relation between popular movements and the Internet. It is considered that the Internet has broadened the possibilities for popular, communitarian and alternative communication, which is renewed in its language, format, importance and scope.

Based on an analysis of the television style, this study explores the presence of power and oppression relationships in scenes taken from the soap operas Renascer (1993) and O Rei do Gado (1996). The objective is to discover how these relationships can offer the audience a visual experience of the land and its cultural matrix. We conclude that there are different approaches in both soap operas: while in Renascer the deal with the Devil reveals a blend of the origins of “mandonismo” and marvelous realism, in O Rei do Gado negotiations between farmers and landless reveal land policies, the personification of power, and the unfinished nature of agrarian reform.

Estabelecemos uma reflexão sobre o estilo como categoria heurística da análise da autoria nos formatos seriados de ficção televisiva: tal uso vincula essa categoria às dinâmicas sociais de atribuição autoral, uma vez reconhecidas as instâncias de tomada de decisão em processos criativos e o funcionamento textual de tais obras. Avançamos assim a hipótese da conjunção de questões de método vindas de duas fontes, a saber: a observância a processos sociais da autoria (na definição de agentes responsáveis e das dinâmicas sociais de reconhecimento) e aquelas que se associam às gramáticas textuais dos formatos seriados (na escritura dramatúrgica e nos princípios da encenação audiovisual).

This article proposes to discuss the topicality of the method developed by the French thinker Edgar Morin (1921-) in the 1960s, coined as sociology of the present. Our hypothesis is that the sociology of the present allows for a multidimensional approach to reality, which is suitable to analyze increasingly complex social phenomena. As reference, we take two specific scenarios developed by the author in the works Commune en France: la métamorphose de Plozévet (1967) and Chronicle of a summer (1961). We thus conclude that the central notions of crisis and event, as highlighted by the author, become increasingly more operative and reflexive, just as the method of phenomenological observation, interview and intervention.

O principal objetivo desse trabalho é discutir a ausência de Jesús Martín-Barbero nos estudos de Ciências da Comunicação em Portugal. Tendo em conta que os fluxos acadêmicos entre Brasil e Portugal são intensos, poderíamos ter como hipótese o compartilhamento de bibliografia e metodologias, a partir da introdução de autores brasileiros e latino-americanos em Portugal e de portugueses no Brasil. No entanto, esta partilha é esporádica, nos dois lados do Atlântico, e nela não se inclui Martín-Barbero de forma sistemática (Cunha, 2017b). Objetivamos, por esta razão, mapear a sua presença e identificar as razões que levam a que a sua presença, nomeadamente nos estudos sobre recepção e cultura, seja tão discreta no contexto da pesquisa portuguesa.
