O presente Relatório Final intitulado O uso do texto literário na disciplina de História de 9.º ano – Exemplos em sala de aula – foi realizado no âmbito da conclusão do Mestrado em Ensino de História no 3.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário, orientado pelo Professor Doutor Miguel Monteiro. Nos dias de hoje a leitura é um bem essencial, tantas vezes considerada um dado adquirido. Saber ler adquiriu múltiplos significados deixando de ser somente a descodificação de símbolos e a transmissão de uma mensagem, é acima de tudo a compreensão plena da informação transmitida, e a capacidade de criticar e apreciar essa informação. A utilização de textos literários enquanto instrumentos didáticos da disciplina de História são pouco utilizados em sala de aula. Ao longo do relatório procurei estabelecer uma relação entre os benefícios dos hábitos de leitura regulares com os objetivos da disciplina de História. Ao longo do primeiro semestre do Ano Lectivo de 2019/2020 realizei a Iniciação à Prática Profissional na Escola D. António da Costa, localizada em Almada, com a turma 9.º 3, lecionando treze aulas. Em três das treze aulas lecionadas procurei utilizar o texto literário como instrumento didático, procurando estabelecer relações entre os textos e a matéria a lecionar. Os textos escolhidos foram O Grande Gatsby, A Quinta dos Animais, o Manifesto Futurista e a Ode Triunfal. A apresentação destes textos aos alunos teve como principal objetivo demonstrar-lhes outro tipo de textos para além do manual escolar, e não um profundo desenvolvimento das relações textuais.

This essay confronts the viewer with protracted refuge by looking at the Meheba Refugee Camp, Zambia. Created in 1971 and still running well beyond the moment of emergency at its origin, Meheba challenges the generic and generalized visual representation of refugees and refugee camps. This photo-essay seeks to depict how displaced populations forge a life in exile in spite of all the adversities, but also of how the spaces of refuge evolve, consolidate, and become part of the territory in which they are located.

O artigo explora a relação entre práticas cinematográficas e práticas turísticas na produção de filmes turísticos portugueses da década de 1960. Para além da análise de imagens depositadas no Arquivo Nacional das Imagens em Movimento (ANIM) da Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema, recorro ao testemunho de profissionais do cinema e seus familiares para tentar recuperar os contextos e as práticas de produção destes filmes, numa espécie de etnografia retrospectiva do campo de produção cinematográfica desse tempo. Ainda que frequentemente relegados (pelos próprios realizadores) para uma posição secundária ou marginal, estes e outros filmes de utilidade desempenharam um papel importante na carreira destes profissionais, permitindo-lhes desenvolver uma práxis profissional reconhecida dentro e fora do meio cinematográfico e, em geral, permanecer dentro de uma profissão marcada por uma elevada precariedade laboral. Na linha de teorias “não-representacionais” ou “mais-do-que-representacionais”, analiso a produção de imagens em movimento turísticas à luz da sobreposição de experiências cinematográficas e turísticas incarnadas e situadas, e não tanto da imposição directa de um “olhar turístico” por parte quer da indústria quer do Estado.

Entre 10 e 25 de Setembro de 2020, sete jovens artistas habitaram o espaço da associação Quinta das Relvas e aceitaram o desafio de desenvolver o seu trabalho artístico seguindo a proposição da expressão "um grão na asa" - sentir-se levemente embriagado, fora do estado normal. Assim, mesmo vivendo tempos atípicos, estes artistas reuniram-se para criar, refletir e debater ideias. Durante duas semanas de constante convívio e partilha de atelier, trocaram-se experiências e partilharam-se conhecimentos: a contaminação, positiva, foi constante, intensa e intimista. Terminada a residência, esta publicação reúne agora alguns testemunhos da experiência vivida por estes artistas, reflexões e resultados produzidos durante este período.

Our present proposal is to critically revisit a limpid and very personal text written by José de Almada Negreiros, "Orpheu 1915-1965," and rediscover the Portuguese Modernist generation in the words of this artist.

O arquitecto Fernando Távora adquiriu numerosos documentos manuscritos e dactilografados por Fernando Pessoa, entre os quais figuram muitos poemas (um deles inédito até hoje) e algumas listas de poemas que referem poemas também inéditos (mas estes encontram-se no espólio pessoano na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal). Este contributo apresenta a maior parte dos poemas da colecção Fernando Távora e ainda outros documentos dessa mesma colecção, muitos deles referidos no lote 31.

Esta tese procura investigar a teia de relações existentes entre cinema e museu a partir de três abordagens diferentes. Em primeiro lugar, perguntando se certas questões que dizem respeito ao museu podem ser pensadas enquanto problemas de cinema. Em segundo lugar, organizando as representações cinematográficas do museu segundo linhas temáticas que tornam explícitas ideias de museu. Finalmente, analisando com maior detalhe um grupo de filmes que cruzam e tornam concretas várias das interrogações levantadas até aí. A pergunta que conduz esta investigação é a seguinte: em que medida é que, ao figurar o espaço do museu, e ao criar assim uma ideia de museu, o cinema está a falar sobre si próprio?

O texto aqui apresentado promove um olhar inicial sobre a Arqueologia de Tendências, um tema pouco estudado tanto ao nível da academia como do mercado, sendo escassa a sua bibliografia. A tese se utiliza de uma nova metodologia para validar hipóteses em relação à Arqueologia de Tendências, aplicando-a a um estudo de caso, nomeadamente a tendência The Full Gaze of Sustainabiliy, centrada no conceito de sustentabilidade, porém de grande abrangência. A abordagem passa pela análise textual em articulação com, entre outras coisas, uma limpeza de dados, identificação e junção de núcleos semânticos. Também se utiliza do Método de Pareto para identificar todos os conceitos que compõem o corpo da Macro Tendência, assim como micro tendências, comportamentos anuais e comportamentos regionais. O método utiliza inputs relatórios consolidados de agências globais que trabalham no campo das tendências, e possui outputs que podem servir de fundação para o campo de estudo. Em última análise, o mapeamento detalhado das tendências pode ser obtido através do método. Espera-se que o método inspire investigadores, e promova a linha de pesquisa assim como novas ferramentas na área.

Esta investigação pretendeu explorar os diferentes perfis de alunos rejeitados agressivos e não-agressivos de entre 1069 adolescentes entre os 12 e os 16 anos de idade. Reflectindo acerca dos factores que poderão contribuir para a pertença a uma ou outra categoria, distinguimos quatro conjuntos de factores: pessoais, familiares, sociais e de funcionamento escolar. Os factores pessoais incluem diversas dimensões do self (académica, familiar e social), depressão e stress percepcionado; os familiares englobam a comunicação familiar (pai-pai e pai-criança) e apoio familiar (de pais e de irmãos); os sociais incluem relações de apoio e acontecimentos de vida; os escolares abrangem as atitudes face à escola, o estatuto sóciometrico na sala de aula, e as percepções do professor sobre a adaptação psicossocial e escolar do aluno. Os resultados das análises MANOVA, ANOVA mostraram que os alunos agressivos e rejeitados diferiam dos alunos não-agressivos rejeitados e do grupo de controlo na medida em que possuem níveis mais pobres de funcionamento pessoal, familiar, social e escolar. Além disso, os resultados também mostraram o grau moderado de adaptação dos alunos alunos não-agressivos rejeitados em relação ao grupo de controlo.

This translation fills a serious lack in the literary panorama and has the particularity of allowing the reader to identify lines of reading. In fact, the poet builds with Argonautica’s lemmas, almost as many as those of Odyssey, meanings that easily go unnoticed by the current reader, secluded from the original by the linguistic barrier. This translation is the first one done with the concern of keeping the lemmas recognizable. We want the contemporary reader to identify, as the Alexandrian reader, the parallels with other episodes within the poem, the subtle evocations of characters and moments. In the notes we clarify the most difficult passages and we also identify some of the work done with the sources, especially the Homeric. In the introduction we integrate the poet in his time and we analyse the invocation and the ecphrasis of Jason’s mantle. All the places on the outward journey also deserve comment, since from them there are several paths leading to the story, to Alexandrian literary aesthetics and to the History itself.

β-Thalassemia is one of the most common inherited anemias, with no effective cure for most patients. The pathophysiology reflects an imbalance between α- and β-globin chains with an excess of free α-globin chains causing ineffective erythropoiesis and hemolysis. When α-thalassemia is co-inherited with β-thalassemia, excess free α-globin chains are reduced significantly ameliorating the clinical severity. Here we demonstrate the use of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing of primary human hematopoietic stem/progenitor (CD34+) cells to emulate a natural mutation, which deletes the MCS-R2 α-globin enhancer and causes α-thalassemia. When edited CD34+ cells are differentiated into erythroid cells, we observe the expected reduction in α-globin expression and a correction of the pathologic globin chain imbalance in cells from patients with β-thalassemia. Xenograft assays show that a proportion of the edited CD34+ cells are long-term repopulating hematopoietic stem cells, demonstrating the potential of this approach for translation into a therapy for β-thalassemia.

Alzheimer´s Disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders worldwide. Excess of β-amyloid (Aβ), a peptide with a high propensity to misfold and self-aggregate, is believed to be the major contributor to the observed neuronal degeneration and cognitive decline in AD. Here, we characterize the epitope of a novel anti-Aβ monoclonal antibody, the STAB-MAb, which has previously demonstrated picomolar affinities for both monomers (KD = 80 pM) and fibrils (KD = 130 pM) of Aβ(1-42) and has shown therapeutic efficacy in preclinical mouse models of AD. Our findings reveal a widespread epitope that embraces several key Aβ residues that have been previously described as important in the Aβ fibrillation process. Of note, STAB-MAb exhibits a stronger affinity for the N-terminus of Aβ and stabilizes an α-helix conformation in the central to N-terminal region of the peptide, in addition to disrupting a characteristic salt-bridge of a hairpin structure present in fibrils. The NMR derived epitope supports the observed results from ThT-monitored fluorescence and electron microscopy experiments, in which STAB-MAb was shown to inhibit the formation of aggregates and promote disruption of pre-formed fibrils. In combination with the published in vitro and in vivo assays, our study highlights STAB-MAb as a rare and versatile antibody with analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy.

Norm enforcement may be important for resolving conflicts and promoting cooperation. However, little is known about how preferred responses to norm violations vary across cultures and across domains. In a preregistered study of 57 countries (using convenience samples of 22,863 students and non-students), we measured perceptions of the appropriateness of various responses to a violation of a cooperative norm and to atypical social behaviors. Our findings highlight both cultural universals and cultural variation. We find a universal negative relation between appropriateness ratings of norm violations and appropriateness ratings of responses in the form of confrontation, social ostracism and gossip. Moreover, we find the country variation in the appropriateness of sanctions to be consistent across different norm violations but not across different sanctions. Specifically, in those countries where use of physical confrontation and social ostracism is rated as less appropriate, gossip is rated as more appropriate.

Mitochondria have a pivotal role in the maintenance of cell homeostasis and survival. Mitochondria are involved in processes such as ATP production, reactive oxygen species production, apoptosis induction, calcium homeostasis and protein degradation. Thus, mechanisms that regulate the intrinsic quality of mitochondria have a crucial role in dictating overall cell fate. The importance of these well-regulated mechanisms is highlighted in disease scenarios such as neurodegeneration, cancer and neuromuscular atrophy. How mitochondria senses and regulates their intrinsic quality control, and consequently cell survival, is still not fully understood. In this review, we discuss the pathways that are at present considered as state-of-the-art for mitochondria quality control regulation, and highlight a mitochondrial protein-PINK1-that has revealed to act as a mitochondrial gatekeeper able to sense the presence of healthy or damaged mitochondria.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an essential treatment modality for several types of cancer. Despite its therapeutic potential, RT is frequently insufficient to overcome the immunosuppressive nature of the tumor microenvironment, failing to control tumor metastases. Innovative immunomodulatory strategies, like immunostimulatory biomaterials could be used to boost the immunogenic effects of RT. Herein, we addressed the synergistic potential of immunostimulatory chitosan/poly(γ-glutamic acid) nanoparticles (Ch/γ-PGA NPs) combined with RT to induce antitumor immunity in the 4T1 orthotopic breast tumor mouse model. Non-treated animals had progressive primary tumor growth and developed splenomegaly and lung metastases. While RT decreased primary tumor burden, Ch/γ-PGA NPs-treatment decreased systemic immunosuppression and lung metastases. The combination therapy (RT + Ch/γ-PGA NPs) synergistically impaired 4T1 tumor progression, which was associated with a significant primary tumor growth and splenomegaly reduction, a decrease in the percentage of splenic immunosuppressive myeloid cells and an increase in antitumoral CD4+IFN-γ+ population. Notably, animals from the combination therapy presented less and smaller lung metastatic foci and lower levels of the systemic pro-tumor cytokines IL-3, IL-4, IL-10, and of the CCL4 chemokine, in comparison to non-treated animals. Overall, these results evidenced that Ch/γ-PGA NPs potentiate and synergize with RT, headlining their promising role as adjuvant anticancer strategies.

Uncertainty is an essential characteristic of our lives. However, by moving from one country to another, from a familiar context to an unfamiliar one, uncertainty becomes a key element of migrants’ decisions. In times of restricted mobility regimes, migrants often do not know if they will be able to reach the desired destination. Even if they manage to do so, it is still uncertain if they will be able to fulfil their aspirations. However, uncertainty also leaves room for hope. Departing from the conceptualisation of hope as the simultaneity of both potentiality and uncertainty and from the concept of circumstantial migration, this article analyses (1) retrospectively the decision of Senegalese migrants to move to Brazil and (2) the intentions of onward migration. Based on empirical data collected through ethnographic fieldwork in four Brazilian cities, this article shows how migration as a form of social hope is redirected to new destinations and that this redirection is a consequence of circumstances and coincidences, which enable or prevent movement. Potential positive outcomes of migration outweighed negative ones, which play a minor role and hardly affect decisions to leave Senegal. However, decisions to emigrate are often based on incomplete information and ill-informed expectations regarding the circumstances at the destination and can lead to feelings of disillusion. The impact of uncertainties shows a more differentiated picture in the context of onward migration intentions. While some migrants are willing to take big risks in onward migration, others try to minimize uncertainties.

This research investigates links between the Euro Crisis and populism and asks whether there are patterns of populism in different election campaigns, namely is there country-specific populist rhetoric or similar anti-elite criticisms? Through content analysis, we examine the mainstream media coverage of populist and non-populist actors in the countries that were most affected by the Euro Crisis (Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain) and in Poland, a country that, despite not being part of the Euro, has been experiencing a significant rise of populism recently. These are also countries underrepresented in systematic empirical political communication research and that represent different levels of success of populism. Our findings show that although mainstream news media tends to be negative towards populist candidates, there are important cross-country differences with potential impact on the electoral success and failure of populist actors.
