Using persistent identifiers to track PhD outcomes

The British Library and STFC are working together to connect metadata relating to PhD theses to use of research facilities provided by STFC. Through the creation of a graph which connects metadata across EThOS, the UK national e-theses repository, the STFC insitutional repository ePubs and the Diamond Light Source repository, links between the theses, authors and institutions have been made. This pilot work has the potential to be extended to enhance the metadata stored within EThOS which is administered by The British Library. This work presents an exciting possibility for other institutions as this graph will present a method to enable the bi-directional updating of metadata held across different systems.

Global visibility and exposure to drive the quality of doctoral education

Universities worldwide are expanding how they showcase electronic theses and dissertations and their authors. One way this is accomplished is video recordings of “3 Minute Thesis” competitions. Saint Petersburg State University goes one step further and documents the full defense of their dissertations on video and makes the recording openly available on the official university site together with full texts and opponents reviews. This is one part of their strategy to provide more transparency with the goal of enhancing the overall quality of dissertations. The second part of this strategy is the Library of Saint Petersburg State University working with ProQuest to disseminate dissertations to a global audience through ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) database.

Digital Initiatives at Dhaka University Library

University of Dhaka is the largest and the oldest public university in Bangladesh. The university has more than forty-two thousand students and over two thousand academic staff. The university library1 is the heart of the academic activities on campus serving a big number of students, teachers and researchers. The university library holds about 0.6 million copies of books and about 30 thousand of rare manuscripts, microfilms, microfiche and other records of historical importance. It is the largest library in the country. The library maintains an institutional repository and online archives of digitized contents for the university community and others. The goal of such initiatives is to increase the visibility, use and impact of the university's research publications by offering them to use through the university's own digital archival system. The repository consists of full-text materials produced in the university such as theses, internship reports, journal articles, conference proceedings and research materials produced by all the departments, Institutes, research centers and units of the university. DSpace is used for this repository services.  Since June 2012, the repository has been archiving research articles and most importantly all these research publications are of open access allowing university community to have free access to them. Its unique feature is that academic and researchers can also archive their research and other publications in this repository platform. Since this is an open access platform for the university community who can easily get information and relevant research articles from this platform, it is particularly popular among new and young scholars. Additionally, the university library preserves its own digitized newspapers, manuscripts and rare materials in a recently created archival system. This is the first of its kind initiative which has an outstanding impact on access and use of digitized resources in Bangladesh. This poster provides an overview of Dhaka University Library’s institutional repository and archival services currently available. It will also highlight future plans and programs for better library management and services besides increasing access to archival contents for the university community.

A Multi-Faceted Multi-Stakeholder Approach for Increased Visibility of ETDs in Zambia

The University of Zambia has had a functional Institutional Repository (IR) since 2012. However, while Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) are routinely deposited into the IR, the ingestion is not timely, with significantly large time gaps existing between ETD submission dates and ETD IR ingestion dates. We propose a multi-faceted approach that is aimed at providing a potentially viable solution to the problems through the use of effective workflows and automatic classification of IR objects. Preliminary results demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach is feasible. It is anticipated that the proposed approach will facilitate the implementation of a National ETD portal for storing up-to-date and consistent metadata records from Higher Education Institutions across Zambia.

Using metadata record graphs to understand controlled vocabulary and keyword usage for subject representation in the UNT theses and dissertations collection

An important function of metadata for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) is supporting the discovery of related documents through linking of data values in the fields of metadata records. While benefits of the ETD format allow for full-text searching, metadata is still an important and necessary component of the global ETD infrastructure because it is often not possible to share the full documents in aggregations such as the Global ETD Search for the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. The metadata field that has the most potential to assist users in discovery is the subject field used to represent what a resource is about. Over the years there has been much discussion of the value of author-generated keywords versus adding subject terms from controlled vocabularies by information professionals as documents are submitted to the University repository. This research seeks to explore this problem with the help of network analysis method not used for such analyzes before by building and analyzing metadata record graphs for the University of North Texas theses and dissertations. This paper reports on the characteristics of keyword-based and controlled-vocabulary-based metadata record networks and discussions insights that can be gained from this approach to metadata quality analysis. Mapping of ETDs in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) Global database (2014-2018)

The information explosion in the form of ETDs poses the challenge of management and extraction of appropriate knowledge for decision making by information practitioners. This study presents a solution to the problem by applying topic mining and prediction modeling to 441 full-text ETDs extracted from the PQDT Global database during 2014-2018 in the field of library science using the RapidMiner platform. This study was divided into three phases. In the first phase, metadata analysis of the ETDs retrieved from the database was performed to identify the association of various entities such as universities, departments, types of degrees, and geographical areas with the ETDs. In the second phase, 8 core topics namelychildren literature; academic library; information retrieval; archival science; user study; digital library; library leadership; and digital communication were determined using latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) and each ETD was then annotated with the modeled topic. Lastly, a prediction model using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) was created to classify the untagged ETDs going to be submitted in the database under the 8 modeled topics ( a to h ).

The status of the Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETDs) outputs amongst the institutional repositories in South African universities: Part 1 .

Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETD) have been around for more than a decade now and were initiated as a means of collecting, sharing, disseminating, and archiving research outputs from academic institutions. Even before ETDs, institutions of higher learning have been collecting and archiving this type of scholarly outputs manually. While most thesis remain unpublished, this knowledge produced is almost constant as it is (in most universities) a requirement when research students graduate. In sub-Saharan Africa, it has been established that there is low research output when compared to the rest of the world. Yet, there are many universities in Africa who produce post-graduate students who submit ETDs and these are not visible or most never turn into research papers. As in the rest of this world, African universities have established institutional repositories in academic libraries to help preserve the institution’s intellectual property and to increase the institution’s visibility (global rankings) and prestige. It is uncommon to have either a dedicated ETD collection in an institutional repository or a stand-alone ETD repository. This purpose of this study was to establish the research output and visibility of scholarly research produced by the higher education institutions in South Africa and specifically focus on the ETDs. This study has both qualitative and employs pre-dominantly the desk-study and intensive literature review. The study discovered that all 23 South African universities have ETD collections and three have dedicated ETD repositories. The rate of deposit does not match the graduation levels and the visibility of these ETD require an institutional priority. The paper concludes by proposing an in-depth survey to understand the emerging issues from this present study. This is the first part of the 2 part study, the second part interviews the ETD managers or repository managers to closely verify the issues raised or discovered in the first part.

The ETD lens on the IR and the University

Electronic Theses and Dissertation (ETDs) form the foundation of many institutional repositories (IR), and ETDs can provide an important lens on how the IR represents the work that is being done university-wide. To test this theory, I studied a microcosm of VTechWorks, the IR at Virginia Tech, anticipating that it would encapsulate the characteristics of the repository as a whole. I analyzed the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) microcosm through the ETD lens. I compiled a controlled vocabulary of 161 LGBTQ terms and phrases that I searched in the IR’s ETD collection, recording number of hits for each term. To give context to this data and to understand more broadly who is doing the scholarship and research in this microcosm, I gathered the same data from the IR’s faculty publications and academic units’ web publications which are often aimed at alumni or the public. I searched the same vocabulary in the university website to establish the measure of the LGBTQ domain and to contextualize the data from the IR. Using a microcosm to look at graduate student works in the IR and university web publications provides manageable data and the opportunity to reflect on the contribution of ETDs to the development of institutional repositories.

Use of Turnitin and Urkund anti-plagiarism software tools for plagiarism detection/similarity checks to the Doctoral theses: Indian experience

India is one of the massive higher education systems in the world. The doctoral research output plays a significant role as it is a primitive source and blueprint of research also growing fast pace it has a 24% increase in doctoral degree compare to the previous year. Anti-plagiarism software screening to theses text is boon to Indian universities and first instances it is preserving from copy verbatim the doctoral theses particularly in English against 234592 online theses in Shodhgang repository. But scanning of doctoral theses detecting plagiarism in Indian regional languages not completing effectively the cause is oblivious Indian language scripts not covered in software.  Software tools adopted for the plagiarism/ similarity check it showed the diverse results of the similarity index for the same text of doctoral theses. Moreover, the court has observed that human judgment is needed to determine the copying rather than considering the software-generated report are the major issues in the present scenario.
