Day Center for the Elderly: positive affect as a power of action and strengthening of bonds

This descriptive and observational study aimed to present the Day Center for the Elderly, the profile of users, and the applicability of the theory of positive affects as a power of action and strengthening of bonds. The Day Center for the Elderly is a short-term public resource for the elderly who have family members during situations of social vulnerability and dependency. It is noted in home visits of the elderly that their situations can translate into isolation, confinement, abandonment, abuse, neglect, prejudice, discrimination, subjection, affective poverty, dependence, and fragility of family and community bonds. After access to the services and interventions, we observed an improvement in self-esteem, affectivity, autonomy, independence, coexistence and strengthening of bonds.

Quality in Day Center for the elderly

Aging calls for new forms of services for the elderly. Thinking of supplying this demand, there is the Day Center for the Elderly (CDI) that offers service to the elderly, semi-dependent. On the one hand there is explicit recognition of the importance of CDI for the elderly / family / society triad, on the other hand, studies and formulations in the scope of quality control of these services. The meaning of playing Xbox Kinect bowling in the perception of elderly residents of a Nursing Home

Studies in the literature suggest that games with large displacements in the center of mass and changes in the support base defy balance and are sufficient to improve postural control during functional activities, as well as promoting social interaction. This study aimed to survey the benefits provided by the activity of playing Xbox bowling in institutionalized elderly, and the motivations that led them to participate in it. A qualitative research was carried out using Schütz Social Phenomenology as the basis and applying the Geriatric Depression Scale (EDG) as an instrument. Methods: 14 residents of an Nursing Home participated in the study. Results and considerations: The result showed us that this type of activity improved the mood of most participants, in addition to increasing social interaction and residents' satisfaction.

Prevalence use of potentially inappropriate drugs for elderly in Brazil: a sistematic review

The aging is related with use of drugs. This research is a systematic review about use of potentially inappropriate drugs for elderly evaluated by Beers Criteria. The prevalence’s range was 17 to 98,2% on home, ambulatory, hospital or nursing home samples. These data demonstrate that governmental politics are necessary to face the risks of drugs using by elderly in Brazil.

Violence against the elderly: an invisible epidemic

The elderly population has grown in recent years, while not past, these are seen as a source of wisdom and respect, today are always more victims of violence in various forms. Be it in the form of lack of accessibility, lack of adaptation to these, be it no social discredit, even forms more graves of violence such as physical, psychological and abandonment, often on the part of those who should care and love, as children and relatives . Organs and documents, such as the Statute for the Elderly, seek to bring dignity to the elderly population. It is also important to emphasize protective and professional networks that welcome and care for people. However, these same professionals are better able to learn and be closer and more solidary in has been able to identify the diagnosis of violence more quickly. The objective of this study is to analyze the main forms of violence committed to the elderly, where some are not always perceptible, as well as to deal clearly with the role of the protective networks professional, their qualities and limitations, as well as to offer the means to prevent violence and helps elderly people who have been victims of violence. To do so, this article is done on the basis of bibliographic research, that is, it is carried out based on books, scientific articles and other serious and reliable source materials that will bring credibility yet still work.

Relationship between functional independence and quality of life of elderly participants in partnership groups

This study aimed to investigate the functional independence and its relations in the quality of life of elderly participants Basic Units of community groups Health. It was observed that the functional independence presents correlation with the quality of life of the elderly, with statistical significance for the domains 'functioning of the sensorium', 'autonomy' and 'social participation'. Cloncluded that functionally independent elderly present a better quality of life.

Stimulation of memory and communication of the elderly: experience report based in health promotion

This is an experience report of a group of elderly memory and communication stimulation carried out between 2014th and 2017th. A total of 96 elderlies participated in the meetings, with a prevalence of females. About 14 semesters of meetings were held weekly, lasting 80 minutes. In addition to a living space, stimulation activities focused on cognitive performance were carry out in order to elderly health promotion and quality of life.

Influence of working memory and quality of life of active elderly

This study aims to relate the performance in Working Memory with the self-perception of Quality of Life in active older people. This study is an observational, cross-sectional, quantitative, and descriptive study carried out in a community center for the elderly in Aracaju, SE, Brazil, which concluded that the Working Memory was associated with self-perception of quality of life and satisfaction with health in the population studied.

Female genital self-image in the aging process: integrative literature review

The aim of this study was to verify the profile of studies that deal with female genital self-image in the aging process and the intervening factors in it. Integrative bibliographic review in the SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE and PubMed databases. 28 articles were found, most of them with women in perimenopause, using the Female Genital Self Image Scale and having as intervening factors sexual function, genital surgeries, relationship status, age, among others.

A qualitative study about dance as a life power in old age

This article aims to investigate how dance, while body expression is related to a life-enhancing experience in old age. For this, a systematic review of the literature was carried out by combining the descriptors: dance, body, aging and potentiating experience, in the SciELO database, obtaining 33 publications in the period from 2005 to 2015. It is concluded that the experience of dance enables the elderly to reinvent themselves, although studies on the subject are still scarce in the scientific literature.

Therapeutic music workshops in health promotion for the elderly: an experience report

The objective of this work was to report the experience lived in the realization of therapeutic music workshops to promote the health of the elderly. The activities took place in two stages: in the first, the activities of therapeutic music workshops were carried out and, in the second, a conversation circle for dialogue about this Complementary Integrative Practice. The use of music is relevant for health promotion in elderly individuals, being easy to apply by students, guided by health professionals.

Participatory evaluation of an Open University for the Third Age: elderly’ s perspective

The objective of this article was to carry out a participatory evaluation of an Open University to the Third Age from the elderly’s perspective. Ten people aged between 62 and 74 years participated in a semi-structured interview, whose data were submitted to the thematic content analysis. Three categories were discussed: satisfaction with the project, learning for daily life and didactic resources and planning. Satisfaction arose from the possibility of interaction and acquisition of knowledge. It discusses the need to advance the didactics used by teachers and project planning.

Analysis of quality of life in older adults in the Czech Republic and Brazil – a systematic review

The objective of this study was to search for original articles that approach the Brazilian and Czech  elderly’s quality of life in different dimensions. A systematic review was developed and the searches were carried out in Pub-Med/MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO and PsycINFO databases. The quests were performed using the English language, over the period ranging from July 2008 through June 2018. Thirty  studies, 27 with  Brazilian elderly, 2 with Czech elderly and 1 with both populations,  were found according to selected inclusion criteria. The results show that the Czech elderly have a lower quality of life perception than the Brazilian ones. When living in rural areas, the latter showed good results for autonomy, psychological and physical factors as well as low consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The different dimensions of quality of life can be improved for the Czech and Brazilian elderly for health education and social purposes.

Urinary incontinence and pelvic floor function in physically active older women: comparison between different age groups

The study aimed to analyze the pelvic floor functionality of physically active elderly women with and without Urinary Incontinence, according to the age group. Through a descriptive research, with 61 elderly women (30 with UI and 31 without UI) aged between 60 and 71 years, physically active in the municipality of Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The elderly women with UI in the longest-lived group had worse pelvic floor functionality, in the items strength (p = 0.049) and maintained repetitions (p = 0.023), with aging being an influencing factor for UI genesis.

Gender gaps in the course of life and their impact on old age: an approach to rethink public policies for care for the elderly in Mexico

The objective is to know the gender gaps in the life of rural elderly people and their impact on old age. The methodology is qualitative, the study analyzes the life stories of 15 rural elderly people (9 women and 6 men), in Mexico. The results show that from an early age there are gender differences resulting in interdependent gaps and inequalities that affect the entire course of life, with accentuated effects on old age.

From the research carried out in English, Spanish and Portuguese, in the databases EBSCO-PSY / ASC, PUBMED, SciELO and B-on, 27 articles were included for narrative review of the literature. The information was organized into six domains and made it possible to understand the aspects that influence the development and maintenance of practices centered in older people living in long-term care facilities.

Self-perception of bucal health to denture wearers, older adults

The main objective of the present research was to analyze the self-perception of dental users over 50 years of age regarding oral health conditions. Qualitative, quantitative and cross-sectional research was carried out through the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) instrument, two closed questions, sociodemographic questionnaire and clinical analysis. The average GOHAI index was considered poor, observing the relationship between income and self-perceived oral health as poor. All participants reported having a problem with their teeth, gum or prosthesis, which is still worrying on the threshold of old age.

Sentiment of elderly people before finitude: perception of non-institutionalized elderly residents in the city of Recife, PE, Brazil

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) estimates that in 2060 Brazil will have 33 million elderly people. In the present study, we sought to assess the perception of finitude of a group of non-institutionalized elderly people in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The results showed that 70% of the elderly studied are aware that death is a natural process that is part of life, and about 27.6% are totally at odds that death is seen as suffering and loneliness.

Aging in rural areas in the interior of the state of Amazonas, cognitive performance, functionality and health perception: a cross-sectional study

It characterized the cognitive performance, functionality and physical health of the elderly in the rural municipality of Coari into the Amazon, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 100 elderly aged 60 years or more. Most seniors of the countryside is considered young, with severe cognitive impairment, self reported pain, but with good functionality and autonomy. There inside the Amazon shortage of public policy for the population of rural elderly.

Aging and elderly blood donors: prevalence and adverse reactions

Prevalence and adverse reactions to blood donations were found in aging and elderly donors. Retrospective study with data from the computerized system of Hemocenter in Brasília. Of the 55636 donors, 6.3% were aging and 0.8% elderly. There was a lower prevalence of adverse reactions in the elderly, with no significant difference. Regarding the intensity of the reactions, they were mild in the elderly, mild and moderate in the aging, also without significant difference
