Interpersonal Relations, Family and Social Ties of Institutionalized Elderly

This article deals with an interdisciplinary experiment conducted in the Association of Assistance to Needy and Elder of Santa Cruz do Sul, RS. The article presents some data related with the characteristics of institutionalized elderly and points out the importance of the university in the development of interdisciplinary actions that contribute to the strengthening of family and social ties. The interdisciplinary collective actions with old-aged people, challenging professionals to develop their intervention, in a way that involves the multidimensionality of aging.

Psychosocial intervention report in Long-stay Institutions for the Elderly

We describe the experience of a psychosocial intervention in a long-stay care instituition for elderly. The localized demands were the issues of identity, self-esteem, sensory stimulation and caregivers. The psychosocial approach provided a welcoming space and acknowledgment the singualrity of the elderly. Psychosocial studies are suggested, focusing on the importance of the psychologist in the highly complex equipment of the social assistance system, in long-stay care institutions for elderly.

Catholic religious and old age LGBT: a study on Social Representations

The present study aimed at apprehending and comparing the Social Representations of Catholic religious in the face of old age LGBT. Participants of the study were 61 practitioners of Catholicism, the majority with more than five years of religious practice (96,7%). With the analyzes made it was observed that the population represents the old age LGBT with negative and stereotyped visions, but, it was also observed a presence of a understandable view to the public

The discourse of nursing students about the palliative care with the hospitalized elderly

This study proposal sought to identify the perception of the student from the last year of the nursing graduate course about the finiteness of the elderly in the context of palliative care. The participants were twenty students who revealed the difficulties in relation to the care with the hospitalized elderly, the fear of death and of being unable to deal with this situation. There is a need for previous preparation of the student to develop the care with the elderly, with an emphasis on skills and abilities to be enhanced in the work routine.

Prevalence of Common Mental Disorders and their association with functional disability in the elderly

The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Common Mental Disorder (CMD) and to verify its association with functional disability in the elderly. Cross-sectional study with application of the instruments: sociodemographic, health, behavioral data, Self-Reporting Questionnaire, Katz Index and Lawton and Brody Scale. The prevalence of CMD was 37.2% and it was found to be associated with sex, health perception, nervous system disease and functional disability in BADL and IADL.

What is the impact of fear of falling on the functional capacity and quality of life of the elderly in a physiotherapy rehabilitation center in the city of Mogi das Cruzes, SP, Brazil?

Aging is a heterogeneous process with morphological, biochemical and psychological changes that affect motor skills in carrying out the daily activities of the elderly. The aim of the study was to compare the elderly with and without fear of falling in relation to motor performance and quality of life; and correlate the fear of falling with motor performance and quality of life. This is a cross-sectional field study with a quantitative approach developed with 42 elderly people from the Rehabilitation Center in physiotherapy in the city of Mogi das Cruzes, SP, Brazil. The performance of Daily Life Activities, Instrumental Daily Life Activity, fear of falling, quality of life, motor performance and handgrip strength were verified. Elderly people who attend a Rehabilitation Center in Mogi das Cruzes, SP, Brazil, have a relationship between motor performance and functional capacity with the fear of falling.

Is there a difference between body image and genital self-image of elderly with and without urinary incontinence?

This study investigated whether there is a difference between body image and genital self-image in women with and without urinary incontinence, as well as the presence of sociodemographic factors and gynecological history of 132 elderly women. Incontinent elderly women showed a statistically significant difference in marital status, presence of warts and number of deliveries in relation to those who had no losses. Body image and genital self-image did not differ between groups.

Family caregivers of dependent elderly people: living with losses

This article aims to investigate the experience of the main female family caregiver of the elderly dependent. A qualitative study was carried out, in which eight main family caregivers were interviewed. From the discursive material, five categories of analysis emerged. It is concluded that the experience of caring for dependent elderly people generates physical and emotional overload, with losses in the personal, family and social spheres of the family caregiver's life.

The elderly and chronic degenerative diseases: why me, and why now?

With the advancement of modernity, health professions focus their studies on isolated diseases, leaving the experience of the diseased to the side. The aim of this study was to learn how a group of elderly people explain the causality of the chronic diseases that affect them. This is a qualitative study conducted with 54 elders, health insurance users, residents of the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The interviewed group points to the interaction of various causal models, which leads to the thought of a common cultural construction, an explanatory model about the causality of the chronic diseases that affect them.

Palliative Care in Speech Therapy: integrative literature review

The area of Palliative Care (PC) aims at the quality of life to the patient (QLP) who has a disease that has no prognosis for cure. Objective: Carry out an integrative review of the literature on PC in the field of Speech Therapy. Methods: a search was performed considering the descriptors “Palliative Care” and “Speech Therapy”. Results: eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Conclusion: Speech therapy in the area of PC, still has little scientific evidence, however, it is possible to identify its contribution to improving the QLP.

Relationships between free fat mass and lifestyle in oldest-old

Objective: To evaluate the lifestyle and its relations with fat free body mass in elderly people. Method: This was a cross-sectional study, in which 65 long-lived residents of São Paulo city (SP, Brazil) were evaluated. All participants answered the sociodemographic questionnaire and the Profile Lifestyle instrument, in addition to performing the bioimpedance exam and Walking Test. Results: The mean age was 78.8±4.4, and the mean body mass index was 27.4±5.6. Of the respondents, 61.6% were women. The average lifestyle score was 32.12 points. A significant correlation was found between the lifestyle components and the fat free mass index. Conclusion: Significant positive correlation was found between lifestyle components and fat free mass. Most people have an excellent lifestyle and body composition is healthy, with a significant percentage of fat free mass.

Elderly and chronic diseases: experiences with treatment

The aim of this study is to present how a group of elderly people with various chronic diseases, linked to health insurance, manages their treatment and whether their participation in a specific chronic disease management program interferes (or not) in this self-management. It was noted that this group of people have their own behavior when dealing with their prescribed treatment, that give them control over their illnesses and their bodies, selecting information and reinterpreting their relationship with falling ill. Resilience of women with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Objectives: to identify how resilience is expressed among women with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) in a municipality in the southwest region of Bahia and to analyze the relationship between resilience and sociodemographic characteristics and health. Method: A cross-sectional, prospective research, developed among 50 women with DM2 in 2013, using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and sociodemographic data. Results: showed that the average value of DM2 impact on quality of life of women is similar to that found in other studies that investigated people with an diabetes, with average resilience scale CD-RISC of 79.48. There was an association between resilience and religion and the impact of the quality of life of patients with Diabetes in general. We conclude that interventions that enable the promotion of resilience in women with diabetes type 2 can increase the positive outcomes of life and make them more confident in their treatment to improve glycemic control.

Sociodemographic, functional clinic and oral health and general health associated with self-perception of oral health in rural elderly

Home kinesiotherapy for elderly fallers: a methodological quality study

The occurrence of falls in aging represents a serious public health problem. We searched the literature for clinical studies that presented therapeutic exercises / kinesiotherapy to prevent and minimize falls. This is a literature review of clinical trials evaluated by the PEDro methodological quality scale (Physiotherapy Evidence Database). Short-term and long-term home therapeutic exercises were found, the OEP (Otago Exercise Program) proved to be effective, significantly reduced falls and improved quality of life for the elderly fallers.

The aging illogical body: Multiple responses to the passage of time

Prudence and vigilance mark the accelerated phenomenon of population aging, which demonstrates an international concern in the field of health, politics, and economics. Aging starts justifying the redefinition of policies and programs that aim to transform the global profile of old age. New political modes for the management of the elderly population are emerging. Aging is now conceived in accordance with strict normative standards. The biological view of aging predominates. Old age becomes the subject of a number of practices that are linked to medical discourse, from healthy aging to quality of life and old age. The illogical aging body refers to the understanding that, despite all social frames, growing old can become a transgressive process, by challenging aesthetic standards and the cultural and political modeling. The illogical, unexpected, insurgent can be an affirmative and sensitive component of the life of those who age.

Kinesiotherapy applied to elderly patients after total knee prosthesis: a methodological quality study

We sought clinical trials published in the last ten years on prosthetized elderly who underwent kinesiotherapeutic protocols to recover functionality after full knee prosthesis. A literature review was performed in the PEDro, PubMed and SciELO databases. Most studies presented effective protocols for elderly patients with total knee prosthesis that consisted of isometric, isotonic, aerobic, and resistance therapeutic exercise programs.

Evaluation of the pressoric threshold of the elderly pelvic floor

Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study with the objective of assessing the pressure threshold of the pelvic floor of 14 elderly women. An adapted evaluation form and a manual dynamometer were used to assess the pressure pain threshold. The pressure threshold for pain in the pelvic floor was similar between the sides and did not show statistically significant differences. The internal consistency was considered satisfactory. Further research is needed to better identify the reasons and consequences of pelvic pain in elderly women.

The article is based on a research that discussed friendship as mutual care and expansion of the practice of citizenship among children, youth and senior citizens. The authors discuss the importance of friendship and intergenerational care, revealing that they strengthen the right the involved actors have to live in family and community contexts.
