Postural balance evaluation in elderly women with low bone mineral density: fallers and non-fallers

Aging is associated with the decline of physiological functions. In this process, the human skeleton is especially affected by time: bone loss begins as early as the third decade of life. Performance in postural balance tests was evaluated in elderly women who were fallers and non-fallers with low bone mineral density and, secondarily, those afraid of falling had lower performance in balance tests. Sixty-two elderly women aged ≥ 60 years were evaluated, divided into two groups: fallers and non-fallers. The volunteers were evaluated using two postural balance tests: the miniBESTest (test with 14 tasks that assesses balance according to postural responses to external disturbances and verticality); and the NeuroCom Balance Master force platform, in the protocols of the Going Up and Going Down Steps and Sit and Stand Tests. There were no differences in the miniBESTest or in the NeuroCom Balance Master tests between groups. In addition, there were no differences between elderly women with and without fear of falls, in the same variables studied. Elderly people, regardless of being fallers, did not differ in the performance of the postural balance tests, nor in terms of the presence or absence of fear of falling. Keywords: Elderly; Osteoporosis; Falls; Postural balance.

The perception of elderly drivers related to vehicular driving

The aim of this study was to analyze the elderly's perception towards the meaning, importance of and the cessation of driving vehicles. In the research, participated 22 active drivers and another ones who drove for the last 12 months, from both sexes, with age equal to or superior than 65 years. The instruments used were a social demographic questionnaire and semi structured questions about the perception of driving. We observed that the act of driving to elderly people is related to maintaining their liberty and autonomy, and it also brings them joy and pleasure. Concerning the cessation of it, there is a difficulty in accepting this moment, due to the impact caused in their liberty, autonomy and independence.

Health profile and subjective well-being of elderly people in a physical exercise group at a public university in the interior of Amazonas

The health profile and subjective well-being of elderly people who are part of a physical exercise group in a public university in the interior of Amazonas were traced. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional observational study, the sample consisted of 26 elderly people, there was a predominance of women aged between 60 and 69 years, with less than five years of education, retired, living with a spouse and using two to four medications. As for health conditions, the most prevalent diseases were hypertension, gastrointestinal diseases and osteoporosis. When evaluating the subjective well-being, most elderly people had a positive status when comparing their health with that of other people of the same age, as for the social support received, most elderly people had a negative status and said they needed a lot of help when they stay sick or need to make a decision, even financial help. The findings showed that chronic diseases and other health problems found in most elderly people are related to the socio-economic profile, eating habits and low level of physical activity, indicating that it is necessary to apply this study in a larger population of elderly people so that these results can be generalized.
