The role of physical exercise in healthy aging

Physical exercise is an important non-pharmacological tool for good cognitive and physical performance in old age and, therefore, for achieving healthy aging. Scientific evidence indicates that multimodal training, especially involving resistance exercises associated with other modalities, benefits both robust and frail older adults. However, the progression of frequency (3x/week) and intensity (moderate-high) of the exercise should respect the initial condition of the older adults.

Globalisation, ageing and the role of health services

The global demographic and epidemiological scenario is dominated by a rapid growth in the incidence of chronic diseases, both in high-income countries and those with medium / low income. The higher incidence of chronic pathologies in a context of increased average life expectancy produces a higher incidence of complex patients, who present the association of several pathologies and/or the co-presence of unfavorable social conditions (health and social vulnerability). This type of patient needs integrated interventions at different levels. The new epidemiological scenario represents a threat to Health Systems. This epidemiological context foresees an active intervention of the primary care sector in the coordination of interventions in the intermediate care sector, with a multi-service integration function between hospital and territory, and multi-sector integration between social, health, community and family resources. Keywords:

Biological markers: cognitive diseases and neurodegenerative changes in aging

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common dementia; a condition that is neurodegenerative, progressive, insidious and has no cure. Considering the great impact of AD on the lives of the affected and their families; some tests with specificity between 80-95% indicate promising results of the total and phosphorylated liquor biomarkers and Aβ42 peptide for diagnosing AD. This approach may change in the future not only in terms of diagnosis, but also in therapy.

Social inequality and its impact on life expectancy.

Brazil has experienced a pronounced aging of its population with marked gains in life expectancy among older adults. However, individuals of lower socioeconomic conditions often exhibit worse health outcomes that translate in lower life expectancy and fewer years in good health. In this presentation, I examine how education influence prevalence of chronic conditions, life expectancy and life expectancy in good health.

Effect of Aquatic Physiotherapy on pain in sedentary obese women

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Aquatic Physiotherapy on the pain of 15 obese and sedentary women. For the assessment of pain, the McGill-Melzack questionnaire and the Visual Analogue Scale were used. The pain index decreases after the Aquatic Physiotherapy Program (p = 0.001) when analyzing the data from the Visual Analogue Scale and the four parts of the McGill-Melzack questionnaire. It was concluded that the Aquatic Physiotherapy Program proved to be effective in the treatment of pain in obese and sedentary women, which can motivate them to effectively adhere to this Program, even in middle age, preparing their body condition for old age.

Depressive symptoms and associated factors: challenge for the institutionalized elderly care

In view of the relevance of investigating the problems inherent to depression in institutionalized elderly people and, consequently, their impact in the context of ILPI, the objective is to evaluate the prevalence of depressive symptoms in institutionalized elderly people, as well as their associated factors. This is a quantitative cross-sectional survey of 108 elderly people living in all ILPI in the city of Divinópolis, MG, from November 2017 to June 2018. Data were collected through interviews with the elderly, with identification instruments, Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini Mental State Exam and Katz Scale. Descriptive and variance analysis were used. The results showed that 46.3% of the elderly presented a prevalence of depressive symptoms, light or severe, and that this depressive condition is statistically associated with the elderly having no friends or good relationship in the ILPI, not attending the living area, not practicing leisure activities, disliking living in the ILPI, having chronic illness and making use of sleeping medication. It is concluded that emotional, social and health conditions may be related to depressive symptoms in institutionalized elderly people.
