Ler literatura na idade dos porquês: a importância da investigação em literatura para a infância e juventude a partir dos estudos literários
We analyse cases of central and canonical authors of contemporary Portuguese literature who, occasionally and sporadically, wrote texts given to read or purposefully addressed to children and young readers: Vergílio Ferreira, José Saramago and António Lobo Antunes. It is intended to highlight the importance of research in the field of studies of this literary subsystem, from the perspective that defines literature as a system, designed by Itamar Even-Zohar. If the books in this subsystem are characterized by multimodality, or the use of different languages in addition to the verbal one, which often has minimal occupation of the pages, the approach based on literary studies cannot, in the opinion that will be argued, not even fail to relate its specificity of analysis and interpretation with these other forms of aesthetic communication, nor to let their methodologies of creation and reading give second place to the verbal art that, without controversy, defines or goes on defining what literature is.

Human rights, why and what for?
The constant presence of barbaric acts along the history of humanity calls for an "imperial rule of law" in order to avoid the continuation of such a tragic tradition; the Declaration of Human Rights is the basis for such a lawful empire.
Mallarmé’s choreography: an interpretation of "Un Coup De Dés"
On an essay about dance, Mallarmé wrote of an "écriture corporelle" or a "bodily writing". Studies focusing on his poem "Un Coup de Dés" have alluded to an inversion of this idea, hinting at how Mallarmé could try to write the body or, in other words, spell the movement of a dancer through the pages. A quibble on the word "choreography" suggests possible interpretations connected to dance, literature, and the interconnection between these.

Measurement of the Evolution of the Factors’ Total Productivity: The Malmquist Index
The competitiveness of a country depends on the value and growth of the productivity sustained by the economic organisations that integrate the country’s economy. In order to complete the information provided by partial indicators it is fundamental to have one that is capable of getting the sources and comparing objectively and adequately the productivity evolution of the unities as a whole. This indicator is the factors’ total productivity index that may be quantified by the index numbers of Malmquist, Fischer or Törnqvist. In this article special attention is paid to the first one. The factors’ total productivity index of Malmquist is calculated according to the distance functions in relation to the frontier function. The method “Data Envelopment Analysis” or the parametrical stochastic functions are used to estimate the frontier function. In order to show the calculation process we applied the two methods on a balanced panel of 26 agricultural fields located in the MirandêsPlateau during the period from 1990 to 1997.

From Regional Development to Local Developmentanalysis of Some Aspects of Regional Economic Policy
This article focuses on the problematic nature of development, not in the ambit of a conceptual perspective, but considered in the real space. In other words, this article presents some aspects related to the regionalization of the development process, that is to say, it analyses some features of regional and local development. We started from the study of some basic concepts of Regional Development and then we have studied the development of more restrict territory units – the local development, highlighting development policies that may be implemented there. In that task, we emphasise the participation of local agents in diagnostic and joint ventures processes. We conclude, supporting the idea, that the participation of local agents is crucial to the development process, though it is not sufficient to promote it. In order for the individual or joint ventures to have technical and institutional viability it is necessary that highly skilled professionals support development.

Between Innovation and Planningnew Management Models for Hospital Purchases
It is easy to conclude from an assessment of the proposals currently being made for a more dynamic management of the public sector, that their normative nature provides no clear indication of a way out of the maze preventing it from innovation. Given the quick change of society, technology and the economy being experienced today, public institutions are nevertheless obliged to take the first steps away from the welfarist, paternalistic and bureaucratic management that has developed over the past decades, towards a new model, planned and managed and taking into account both demand and innovation. This article reflects on some of the above concerns and puts forward some of the fundamental principals on the basis of which a Central Purchasing System might be created for the hospitals and sub-regional health facilities that together constitute the area over which the Health Authority of Portugal’s Northern Region has jurisdiction, without undermining the interests of the main recipients and/or clients of the health services involved, being them patients or health teams. More specifically, the authors point out some of the administrative and management implications that the restructuring of the value chain would have, if such a central purchasing system was created.

A New Perspective on Cultural Heritage: Preservation and Requalification of Industrial Premises
Over the last decades, the traditional concept of cultural heritage has been changing deeply. This concept has started to include a wide range of objects – which are simultaneously historical sources – including work, daily life and “trivialities”. Consequently, it is necessary to study, preserve and reuse various deactivated industrial premises that have potentialities of beginning a new “cycle of life” and which are useful to the community. Therefore, it is necessary to requalify certain urban and rural spaces adapting them to new social, economic and cultural functions. Thus, the cultural tourism will develop itself considerably at mid and long terms.
União Tomé Fèteira Ltd – a Files’ Industry (1856-1943). Subsidies for Its History
The Industry of Files in Vieira de Leiria evolved naturally since its starting phase of manufacture, with familiar and handicrafts features, until the phase of machinery and the consequent technological progress that projected it to abroad markets. This industry always maintained familiar features and the “secret” of the art, hard work and its unusual capacity for commercial management are well expressed in the History of União Tomé Fèteira Ltd – a Files’ Company. It is undoubtedly a reference name for the historical knowledge of files’ industry in Vieira de Leiria. Our study focuses on the period from 1820 to 1943 because it represents the origin, growth and consolidation not only of this company but also of the files’ industry in general.

Agriculture and Mining, a Difficult Coexistence. The Mines of Vouga Valley and the Communities of Águeda River Valley, 1889-1924
Located in the parish of Talhadas, council of Sever do Vouga, Sever do Vouga mines worked between 1889 and1931. During its productive period, they maintained a conflict with the agricultural communities of Águeda river valley, whose outline is defined in the present article. If, during the first decades people’s complaints about the harmful effects of the wares resulting 360 from the mineral cleaning were circumscribed and located with the changing of the concessionaire, after 1909, and with the consequent increase of the exploration rhythm, the controversy turned open and systematic, assuming at times the form of violence. Due to the contradictions of the republican politic system, the problem of the coexistence between agriculture and mining would end up by inscribing itself, here, in the complex problem of the regime’s consolidation, making the existing divorce between the Republic and the Country even worse.
Iron in History: From Mechanicalarts to the Fine Arts
Iron has been having a great importance in the History of Mankind. Since the Iron Age, the use of iron has developed not only geographically but also in terms of application. Its features as regards resistance, malleability, and durability, make iron an adequate material to be used in several ways. Iron has been used in medieval objects, in the armament of the Modern Age, in machinery and with the industrialisation and by the several buildings of the last two centuries. In fact, iron is a constant presence in our history. The iron architecture became emblematic in the second half of the 19th century and in the beginnings of our century. Due to the possibility of being moulded, cast iron has started to be used by the New Art and wrought iron has been used in grilles, gates, chandeliers and in many kinds of furniture.

The Profile of the Client Using Credit Cards, in CGD’s Agency in Sátão
From a curricular training in the agency of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) in Sátão important information was collected about the population of clients using credit cards. By applying statistical analysis techniques on this information, it allows the characterization of the clients. Descriptive statistic techniques are applied to highlight the differences between the clients who use the “Classic” and “Gold” card, having this last one a greater prestige. The multiple logistical regression model is used to define the profile of the clients, allowing us to determine the relevant variables for the concession of those cards, as well as the importance of each of those significant variables for the segmentation of the clients. This model also allows us to predict the card’s type of each client through his/her features and to make the comparison with the card that the client has effectively.
