Behavior of the extramural uterine arteries in crossbred dogs (Canis familiaris - Linnaeus, 1758)

The present study involved thirty femeale adult dogs coming from the kennel of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The thoracic cavity of the animal was opened and the aorta astery (thoracic part) was locared and canulated. A 450 Neoprene latex solution was used to injet the aorta astery in caudal direction. The specimens were then fixed in a 10 % formol aqueous solution. The results showed that the ovaric, uterine and vaginal arteries supply the uterus as follows : (1) the ovaric artery, in all the cases, arose from the aorta artery, either cranially to the caudal mesenteric artery (98,33%) or at same level of this artery (1,67%). In 83,33% of the cases, it gave off a branch to the uterine corns, which was distributed on the dorsal (8,00%), on the ventral (12,00%) and ond the both (80,00%) surfaces. In addition, two uterine branches distributed on the ventral (66,67%) and the dorsal (33,33%) surfaces were found in 10,00% of the cases; (2) the uterine artery, in all the cases, arose from the vaginal artery. In all the specimens the artery uterine supplied the uterine corns, with the ventral surfaces receiving greater mean number of branches than the dorsal surface. Concerning the uterine body the mean number of branches from the uterine artery showed to be greater on the dorsal surface. In 70, 00% of the cases, the uterine cervix received branches from directly from the uterine artery, with greater number of these arterial vessels being found on the ventral surface.

Cultivo individual de blastocistos bovinos produzidos in vitro

In vitro produced bovine embryos were individually cultured from D7 to D9 to observe their development. Forty-nine blastocysts (early blastocyst, blastocyst and expanded blastocyst) were individually cultured, from D7 to D9 (D0= fertilization), in 50ml SOF medium plus 5% OCS. Between D7 and D8, blastocysts were cultured in straws (SC) or in plates (PC) and from D8 up to D9, they were cultured on plates. The ratio of early blastocyst, blastocyst, and expanded blastocyst advancing at least one stage of development were, respectively, 71%, 37%, 44% in PC and 100%, 66%, 36% in SC (P>;0.05). Overall development rates on D8 were not significantly different (P>;0.05) for PC (50%) and SC (60%). At D9, both culture systems produced similar (P>;0.05) hatching rates (29% and 24% for PC and SC, respectively). After fluorescent nuclei staining, the average number of cells counted in the hatched (182.7 vs. 202.8) and expanding (94.5 vs. 88.0) blastocysts were similar (P>;0.05) for PC and SC, respectively. In vitro produced bovine blastocysts can be individually cultured from D7 to D9, and the culture system employed (dishes or straws) has no effect on hatching rates and cell number of developed blastocysts.

Avaliação clínica, colpo-citológica e endocrinológica de fêmeas de Cerdocyon thous do zoológico do Rio de Janeiro

Serial clinical, colpo-cytological and endocrinological examinations of two five-year-old females of the crab-eating dog (Cerdocyon thous), from the RIOZOO Foundation in the State of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, were carried out over a 10-month period. Clinically healthy animals were kept in sand substratum enclosures, located 500m apart from each other. They were each housed with two males. The colpo-cytological technique employed for Cerdocyon thous used methods similar to those developed for domestic bitches. Unlike domestic dogs, blood cells were absent in all phases of the estrus cycle, including the pro-estrus phase. Differentiation of each type of vaginal cells during the estrus cycle phases in this species follows the same patterns shown by domestic bitches. The estradiol and progesterone levels were similar to those occurring in domestic bitches. The progesterone levels reach their maximum (46 ng/ml) around the 10th day of pregnancy. The estradiol analysis demonstrated that, although levels of this hormone could be high at various times throughout the year, mating actually occurs in late winter and in spring. It was impossible to evaluate whether males and females kept in close proximity throughout the entire year would stimulate the production of estradiol, resulting in what would be considered a captivity artifice.

Mechanical properties of three patterns of suture in the repair of tendon of the muscle deep digital flexor equine

Four mechanical properties: Maximum Limit (ML), Elasticity Limit (EL), Rigidity (RG) and Resilience (RS), of three suture patterns, they were appraised, for mechanical tests of traction. Thirty tendons of the muscles deep digital flexores, of corpses of equine, were separate in three groups of equal number and approximate with the sutures of modified Kessler with suture in the epitendon (MK), modified Becker (MB) and double-locking loop (DL). The resistance to the space formation and the tension loss was also appraised. The results showed that for the load, in ML, only the suture pattern MK was shown significantly different (P<0,05); while, in PL, the three suture patterns behaved equally. As for the deformation, in ML and in EL, the three suture patterns presented significant differences amongst themselves (P<0,05). In RG, only MK behaved different (P<0,05). And, in RS, the three suture patterns presented significant differences amongst themselves (P<0,05). As for the failure, the pattern MK failed for distention and loss of the function of the suture, while the patterns suture MB and DL failed for rupture of the thread. The suture pattern MK was shown superior to the other ones two, whose mechanical properties were equivalent

Application of direct immunofluorescence technic for the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis in lymph nodes aspirate

Recently, canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) was detected in the northwest of São Paulo State - Brazil. The Veterinary Hospital - UNESP - Araçatuba, in 2.000, carried out 60 cytopathological test of suspected cases of leishmaniasis using the fine-needle aspiration (FNA). The smears of the FNA popliteal lymph nodes were stained by the Romanowsky stain (Diff-Quik®) and observed using a light microscope. The positive cases showed typical amastigotes forms of Leishmania either free or in macrophage vacuoles. Cytopathological signs of reactivity of the lymph-hystiocitary system with the absence of parasites were also detected. In order to improve the diagnosis of CVL, looking for parasites and antigenic material detection in smears, we standardized the direct immunofluorescence assay (IFD) using mouse anti-Leishmania policlonal antibodies. We compared the IFD assay with the direct search of parasites in smears stained by Romanowsky stain. From the 60 dogs with clinical signs of the disease, the direct exam was positive in 50% (n=30), uncertain in 36,7% (n=22) and negative with lymph node reativity in 13,3% (n=8). When the lymph node smears were submitted to IFD assay we observed positive reaction in 93,3% (n=56) and negative reaction in 6,7% (n=4). Our results showed that IFD assay presented a high sensibility compared to parasite direct search by Romanowsky stain. The IFD assay could be useful method to confirm the uncertain cases of the disease, where amastigotes forms were not clearly identified.

Serum IgG level in calves experimentally infected with Haemonchus placei

Two experiments were conducted to determine the serum antibody (IgG) dynamic in calves infected with Haemonchus placei. At Experiment 1, the IgG level during the first and second experimental infection were measured and at Experiment 2, the influence of dietary protein and immunization on IgG levels. The calves were immunized using successive H. placei infection truncated by the use of anthelmintic and challenged with 100,000 L3. The infected calves developed a high level of protection, with a significant reduction on fecal egg counts (EPG) at the second infection. However, at the same period, the IgG values continue to presented high levels, independent of the EPG decrease. It was also observed that calves submitted to an adequate protein diet presented a higher IgG level, suggesting an influence on immune response to the infection when compared to the low protein diet calves.

Unexpected chromosomal alterations in Tayassu tajacu (Artiodactyla: Tayassuidae) in captivity

Wild animals have been used as bioindicators in situations in which the environment was exposed to chemical agents. In general, chemical agents may induce chromosomal aberrations, such as breaks and gaps. The peccary, Tayassu tajacu is a pig relative that exhibits a very stable karyotype with the only described alterations being of the form of the X chromosome. Chromosomal gaps and breaks were observed at high frequencies during cytogenetics analyses. These alterations were observed in the chromosomes autossomics. Reviews of the literature and of the data described herein suggests that an vermifuge, the ivermectin base, was the most likely cause of these chromosomal alterations.

Effect of the covariance between maternal and direct effects on the analyses for the traits days to gain 160 kg

Comparative study of the irrigation of the mammary papilla in mongrel dogs (Canis familiaris, Linnaeus, 1758)

We analyzed the distribution and the arterial vascular arrangement of the mammary papilla (MP) in 45 adult mongrel dogs: 15 multiparous females, 15 nulliparous and 15 males. Our ai consists of comparing the irrigation of mammary papillas in these groups for applications in morphology, reproduction, clinic, surgery (anatomicosurgical segmentation) and correlated areas. The specimens were collected in the Center of Zoonosis of Goiânia, they were injected with latex substance, fixed, and then their mammary complexes were analyzed by dissection and also by radiograph. The irrigation of the mammary papilla was classified in direct terminal (DT), direct continuous (DC) and indirect (I). The irrigation of the terminal direct type predominated in the pairs of antimerous 1 and 3 in the three studied groups, showing higher frequency, and not significant in the pair of mamma 2 in nulíparas, and equivalence in comparison to the type of indirect irrigation in multíparas and males in this exactly pair of mama. The type of indirect irrigation prevailed in the pair of mamma 4 and, in the pair of mamma 5, this model of irrigation was described in 100% of the analyzed cases.

Effect of dietary supplementation of unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E upon yolk lipid composition and alpha- tocopherol incorportation into the egg yolk

To investigate the effect of dietary sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids - canola oil (6%), flaxseed (20%) or the combination of both (3% canola oil and 10% flaxseed), and vitamin E supplementation (0,100 e 200 IU/kg of diet) upon the fatty acids and alpha-tocopherol deposition into the eggs, 288 Babcock laying hens were used for a 11 week experimental period. Hens fed 20% flaxseed diet showed a significant reduction of egg weight, feed efficiency, egg production, eggshell thickness and eggshell weight. The inclusion of flaxseed in the diet increased the polyunsaturated fatty acids, depressed monounsaturated fatty acids incorporated into the egg yolk, and increased the ratio P/S (polyunsaturated:saturated fatty acids). Yolk alpha-tocopherol concentration was proportional to its content in the diet (R²=0.9613). Birds fed diets with 6% of canola oil had greater alpha-tocopherol deposition into the eggs.

Comparison of ultrasonography and positive contrast cystography for detection of urinary bladder disorders in dogs

Imaging techniques are often of great value in detecting lower urinary tract abnormalities in small animals, which frequently affect the urinary bladder. Survey and contrast radiography and ultrasonography allow evaluation of bladder shape, position and internal anatomy. The objective was to compare the frequence of identification of urinary bladder lesions in dogs using ultrasonography and positive contrast cystography and, also, determine the efficacy of these imaging procedures in indicating diagnostic hipothesis. This prospective study consisted of 35 dogs, males and females, from different breeds and ages, referred to Imaging Diagnostic Service of Veterinary Teaching Hospital (Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia da Universidade de São Paulo) with clinical signs suggestive of bladder diseases. The positive contrast cystography was more efficient in detecting mucosal surface irregularity, bladder displacement and intraluminal structures except calculi. The ultrasonography identified more often uroliths and bladder wall thickening. Diverticula and bladder rupture were demonstrated only by contrast radiography and urinary sludge by sonographic exam. Intraluminal gas presence, related to emphysematous cystitis, was observed by both techniques. In 23 of 35 cases (65,7%) both of techniques were necessary to provide a complete diagnostic and in 12 cases (34,3%) the perform of just one kind of exam could indicated the diagnostic hipothesis.

Arterial vascularization of the uterine horns in pregnant cross breed cats (Felis catus Linnaeus, 1758)

The arterial vascularization of the uterine horns in 24 pregnant cross breed cats were studied. In 20 animals, with gestation between 7 and 9 weeks, the abdominal aorta was injected with Neoprene latex 650 solution associated with bario sulphate 1004. The X-ray were taked and the animals were fixed in formaldehyde 10% aqueous solution and dissected to study the arterial distribution to paraplacentary and placentary zone. The Power Doppler Ecocardiografh was realized in 4 animals, in paraplacentary zones the vessels resistence rate is smaller than trought uterine artery. In all observations, the uterine artery is the principal vessel to vascularize the uterine horns, emitting 2 to 17 branches, with hight frequence 5 to 12 branches, that wich running to paraplacentary zone and/or placentary zone, forming the anastomotic arcade. There is not estatistical significative difference between branches number from each region individually, however the X-ray analyses showed a hight constrast concentration in regions of the placentary zone. The ovaric artery has participation in arterial vascularization to cranial extremity of the uterine horns, where it makes anastomosis with branches from uterine artery.

Experimental ammonia poisoning in cattle fed extruded or prilled urea: clinical findings

Placental fissure in mongrel cats, Felis catus - Linnaeus, 1758: gross and microscopical aspects

This research consists of study of shematic macroscopy cat's placenta and placental characterization as its type, zonary placenta, that 62,5% of cases presents a fissure at distal area of umbilical cord. This is formed by a joustfetal area, joustplacental area and middle area, histological findings: two arteries, a vein, two vitelline pedicule and two allantois pedicule. In the fissure, an allantoic epithelium covering this area at 10% of the cases and 90% found a trophoblast decrease compared with others placental areas out of the fissure. So, the feline placenta, in its maternal/fetal relationship shows a imcomplete zonary placenta, different of that occurs in other carnivores.

Preweaning piglets mortality in a intensive swine production system

Two research was conducted to evaluate and to classify the occurrence of the preweaning losses (based on the postmortem findings) of piglets in an intense swine production system, at the west of São Paulo State during the year 2000. Among total piglets born alive. 7.19 % died during the first 24 suckling days, but most of them (5.63 %) died on the 1st week of life all over the year. The most important causes of losses were overlaying (2.61 %), weakness (1.45 %), diarrhea syndrome (1.10 %), and genetic defects (0.56 %), occurring mainly on the 1st week of life. Stillbirth rate, in relation to total born, was 5.96 %. Evidences indicated higher number of overlaying during the hottest months of the year, caused probably by the longer staying out of the piglet's pen. It was suggested some control measures to reduce the piglets mortality in order to maximize the productive efficiency of the system.

Structural features of the epididymal region of the domestic duck (Anas plathyrynchos)

The epididymal region of the domestic duck is composed by efferent ductules, whose histotopology was characterized by the proximal and distal ductules and sequentially by the epididymal duct. The epithelial lining of the efferent ductules was ciliated pseudostratified and formed by columnar cells. Also the ducts epididymidis epithelium was pseudostratified but non-ciliated. Concerning the histomorphometric analysis, the epithelial height mean was significantly greater in the distal efferent ductules, differing from the lower epithelium height mean observed in proximal efferent ductules and epididymal duct. The maximum and minimum diameter mean were significantly greater in the proximal efferent ductules, comparatively to the same diameter means of the other ductules.

Evaluation testicular fine needle aspiration cytology and serum testosterone levels in dogs

In order to verify alternative clinical approach in the reproductive evaluation of 4 adult dogs, the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and serum testosterone levels were used together with testicular volume measurement and semen analysis. FNAC was performed in both testes and serum testosterone concentrations were assayed in regular intervals during a 24h period. Results of semen analysis and FNAC were normal in dogs 1 and 3. In dog 2, small testes, poor semen quality, a high percentage of Sertoli cells and early spermatids were found suggesting testicular degeneration. In dog 4, a small right testicle, poor semen quality with low sperm concentration and an uncounted amount of spermatozoa in the FNAC indicated testicular degeneration due to an obstructive lesion; whereas high percentage of distal droplets, thicker left epididymis and normal FNAC of the left testis suggested a slow sperm transit. Testosterone circadian rhythm was clear in 3 of 4 dogs, although concentrations were low. Testicular volume, semen analysis and testicular FNAC could provide valuable information about spermatogenesis. In contrast, serum testosterone concentration was not clearly correlated with any reproductive characteristic of those dogs.
