Letters and notes from Otto Maria Carpeaux to Manoelito de Ornellas: filaments in a web of intellectual relations

This paper presents commented excerpts of the letters that Otto Maria Carpeaux addressed to Manoelito de Ornellas between May 1949 and April 1953. Its aim is to evaluate this small part of the passive correspondence contained in Manoelito de Ornellas’ Literary Collection as to the characteristics of the intellectual sociability developed between those two important writers: on the one hand the European essayist suffering the necessities of his Brazilian exile and on the other the local writer whose extended web of relations enabled him to provide a living for a co-writer in need.

Between real life and creation: the correspondence as a reservoir of fiction

The research in writers’ collections can be a useful source of information for the analysis of a literary production for they are real reservoirs of memory that keep procedural traces and life testimonies. Usually, the correspondence that the writer maintained during his life is conserved in theses archives and, when are consulted, they can supply the researcher fundamental information not only concerning one moment of the writer’s life but also on his practices of writing and the genesis of some literary works. We will show as a letter found in the archive Caio Fernando Abreu made possible a different reading of the short story “Uma estória confusa”.

“Time capsules”: the love epistolography of Paul Auster and Camilo José Cela in the memoir and biography’s composition

This article discusses the contributions of the love letters, written by Camilo José Cela and Paul Auster in their youth, for the composition of an auto/biographical profile of the first one and the memories of childhood and youth of the second one. The main interest in these individuals sets of epistolographical writings is to check what it is established by them, from the point of view of retrieving records from one stage of existence – as “time capsules”, according to Auster – to literary studies, considering not only the development of a memoir text, but also the relativization of the image in the auto/biographical text.

Letter and diary in the 19th century: influences and confluences

This article tries to present the interaction and exchange phenomena between letter and diary, writings different in appearance, during the 19th century in France. The author analyses the singularity of both letter and diary, from some parameters that constitute them, e.g. the relation to the time, to the writing act, to the other, to the writer him or herself. Finallly, the selected examples and the comparative approach of these two writings of the self will show that they are more complementary than rival forms.
