Mozambique 41 years later: 'Chronicle' of a Political Immaturity

This essay reflects on Mozambique in the 41 years of its independence. Fruit of the political hegemony personified by FRELIMO, Mozambique now experiences the wonder of military hostilities with RENAMO. Spanish Action and Portuguese Atlantic enclaves in Africa after the Portuguese independence: loyalty, break or interest

After independence from Portugal in 1640 the landscape of Bragancist loyalty was uncertain in the African Atlantic territories controlled by the Portuguese. The slave trade to Spanish America was a too big interest to break abruptly. In addition, the Spanish presence in Africa had grown since 1580, and after 1640 the Spanish King was not willing to lose his former domains without fighting. Faced with this dilemma the loyalty of many inhabitants of Portuguese enclaves was in question. Many had a hesitant attitude until the situation of political instability had a clarification. At the same time, the Spaniards did not hesitate to increase their commercial and missionary presence in the West African coast.
