The international programming offered by the big cable TV networks is of a very low quality and it costs almost nothing to the operators to the detriment of the real segmentation of Brazilian production and of a pluralist programming of higt quality. Just like the programming of open broadcast channels, the subscriber still doesn't have any control or fiscalization from civil society.

The new Act on Guidelines and Basis for Education - AGB - brings together Social Communication and Education, confirming the concern on giving the students on intelectual formation enough to provide them a critical independence in a world edited by the means of communication.

Through the results of the Research Project "Circulation of Texts in School", the author points out the importance of the non-didactic discourses, mainly those of the means of communication, and their penetration in the student's universe. It is therefore imperative to deal with it in the education institution. The author suggests that the teachers be acquainted with the available studies on critical interpretation of the information conveyed by media and receive orientation on how to work upon these new languages in the pedagogical space.

Os videogames obedecem à estrutura morfológica dos contos populares, conforme a propôs V. I. Propp. O antigo e o novo se diferenciam, no entanto, não só pela base tecnológica como também pela pausterização, com a exclusão de características regionais e peculiares às diferentes culturas. Mesmo assim, a escola não pode se furtar à linguagem dos videogames, nem menosprezar a influência que eles exercem no universo discursivo dos alunos.

O artigo faz um balanço das tendências da pesquisa de comunicação, até início da década de 90, sobre a violência veiculada pela mass media. São pesquisas realizadas na Europa, Venezuela (América Latina) e, em particular, sobre mídia e terrorismo na Espanha. Dá as principais conclusões a que chegaram os pesquisadores de distintas correntes teóricas e salienta a preocupação social sobre o tema.   

Professor Dermeval Saviani talks about teaching quality and the lack, in Brazil, of a national elementary education system copable of attending an existing demand and of following it throught elementary school. He critisizes the system which excludes the low income classes from education as a result of the lack of investments on education. He also speaks about curricular parameters and comments on the results of the Avaliation System (SAEB).

While pointing out the importance of qualitative analysis in the study of art and communication, the author analyses in what way the aestheticdecision for a blond actress in the elaboration of the character Luana of the soap-opera O Rei do Gado, broadcasted on the TV network Rede Globo, in the second half of l996, reinforces the aspiration for whitening and for an identification with the European, which is still present in the national imaginary.

The motion picture The postman, directed by Michael Redford, featuring as central character Massimo Troisi (already deceased) is an adaptation of Antonio Skármeta's novel, and it is about the friendship between the poet Pablo Neruda and the postman Mario Ruoppolo. It is a fictional story which stands out among the monotonous repetition of Hollywood productions, and it speaks of social exclusion with great poetic strength despite the technical simplicity used in its production.

The playwright Luís Alberto de Abreu, author of twenty-two plays, reviews his professional life in the playwriting activity of São Paulo, Brazil, and discusses the creative process, restating the importance of playwriting in the movement for the renewing of dramatic art.

The Institute of Advanced Studies - IAS - is an organism of the University of São Paulo which promotes broad and interdisciplinary research and discussion in the scientific and cultural fields. Based on two different places (Cidade Universitária and Parque do Estado, in the Água Funda neighborhood), it is a service provider to business companies, public institutions and to the public in general in the fields of Astronomy, Mineral Resources, pollution, seismism, meteorology, and climatology.

The Center for Studies of the Women and Social Relationship of Gender produced the Pratical Guide-book about the Teaching and Education with Gerder Equality. Its purpose is to contribute for the development of a serious and unprejudiced pedagogical work, avoiding the sexism in language and trying to ensure, to boys and girls, the same rights and opportunities.

The audio-visual language of television has formed the new generations'view of the world. Hence it is important to abandon prejudices and to deal with it within the pedagogical space of school. This exercise of citizenship is absolutely necessary in order to enable teachers and students to develop a comprehension of the different forms of audio-visual expression.
