Professional education, knowledge and beliefs of Primary Health Care physicians related to aging

The increase in the elderly population, with the complex health problems that involve it, evidences the need to use Primary Health Care (APS), which should be the gateway to health care for the elderly. It is expected that the APS will carry out curative actions and, mainly, of prevention and health promotion in this age group. The objective of this study was to evaluate the professional training, basic knowledge and beliefs related to the area of aging, in 49 physicians who worked in APS of Anápolis, Goiás, Brazil. The following questionnaires were used: one to verify the professional training in the area of aging; the Palmore-Neri-Cachioni Questionnaire, in the evaluation of basic knowledge about old age; and the Neri Scale, to know the beliefs related to the elderly. The physicians showed lack of professional training and basic knowledge in the gerontological area. Among them, 22.4% did not attend Geriatrics / Gerontology discipline at graduation, 71.4% did not have any type of specialization and 91.8% did not obtain medical residency. In the last five years, only 38.8% participated in Geriatrics courses, 10.2% did research in the area and 59.2% read some article about aging. In the evaluation of basic knowledge about old age, the highest numbers of correct answers, 91.8% and 83,7%, have arisen in the two questions that deal with the physical aspects of aging. The issue that received fewer correct answers (6.1%) addresses the social aspect of aging and two issues dealing with psychological aspects had less than 20% of correct answers. As to the beliefs related to old age, the general tendency of the answers was negative. The domain with the most positive evaluation was Agency and the one with the most negative evaluation was Social Relationship. The item with the most positive belief was that of wisdom. It was concluded that continuous education of these professionals is necessary, focused on the different aspects of aging including the psychosocial, as well as the adoption of positive beliefs related to the elderly.

Old age and exteriority: the look of the other in old age, an existential understanding

Old age is a biopsychosocial and cultural phenomenon and presents a strong transformation in level of exteriority. With the changes of the body, the external one reflects the old age of the individual, who, in turn, can experience this reflection in different ways. Thus, this article refers to a theoretical and reflexive survey on old age, with the objective of presenting an existential understanding, based on the existentialism of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, about the influence of the other's gaze on the aging process and in the experience of old age.

Aging from the perspective of Umbanda: the old archetype represented by Orixás and Entities

In order to deepen some of the representations of the old in Brazilian society, we proposed this work that aims to study the Archetype of the Old from the perspective of a typical Brazilian religion: Umbanda. Two Orixás, Nanã Buruquê and Obaluaê, and the Entities called Old Blacks are the ones that best represent the Old Archetype. The very bodily manifestation of such energies in Umbanda rituals unmistakably carries symbols linked to old age. It is common for ritual participants to incorporate symbolic knowledge and meanings concerning the Orixás and Entities worshiped there. The Old Man Archetype in this religion represents knowledge gained over time, lived experience, acquired wisdom, maturity, and patience. These are some of its most striking traits. Umbanda deals with aging and the Old Archetype as essential elements in the process of life evolution and its importance in the individuation process of each of us. In this study we seek to correlate this archetypal principle with the Puer-Senex Archetype of Carl Gustav Jung's theory. In the development of Analytical Psychology, Jung shows this Archetype as a fundamental element for the constitution of the subject in his individuation process.

Therapeutic Accompaniment in Aging - interfaces between Psychogerontology and TA Clinic

Therapeutic Accompaniment (TA) is a form of extra-clinical clinical care aimed at those who, for some reason, are excluded from the social bond, due to emotional restrictions or physical limitations. The TA is a device of clinical intervention developed in the daily life of the companion, providing reconstructions in the relationship between the subject and their social environment, considering its uniqueness. We aim to articulate the theory of TA clinic with the practice of monitoring through a case report, allowing reflections on the importance of this device for the area of psychogerontology. The elderly can be excluded and marginalized for bearing the signs of fragility that contradict the contemporary values of our culture, such as productivity and youthfulness. An elderly person who, in addition to his or her age-related characteristics, also carries marks of psychological illness, such as schizophrenia and depression, carries a potentiated stigma. An old age lived from the perspective of madness consists in a negative social image that results in discrimination and social isolation. TA in the context of psychogerontology aims to provide greater visibility and empowerment to the subjectivity of those who age beyond the acceptable standard of old age. The study was conducted through a case report of an elderly patient followed at her home in the north of São Paulo, from February 2016 to the present. The clinical intervention through TA allowed an emotional improvement of its depressive and psychotic symptoms, allowing the resumption of domestic tasks and their social reintegration.

The use of sunscreen by elderly people attending a university in the Paraíba Valley, Brazil

The study was conducted with 14 elderly people from a university in Vale do Paraíba, state of São Paulo, Brazil, aiming to investigate the daily frequency of sunscreen use; investigate what is the internalized knowledge about continuous and appropriate use, and whether they consider themselves sufficiently informed about sun protection. The results show that these elderly people make frequent and appropriate use of sunscreen, just because they have received safe guidance from health professionals about photoprotection. They consider that they have sufficient knowledge on the subject, among others as to the regular application of the photoprotector, even on days without apparent sun and even before rapid exposures, avoiding exposure at critical radiation times. Although it is considered a low frequency failure of elderly people to apply sunscreen to the skin throughout the day, they recognize that, in fact, its use should be seen as the most efficient mechanism to protect the skin from the effects harmful to the sun, in addition to the recommended use of glasses with UV protection. Finally, it should be noted that photoprotection studies need to continue in order to find and publicize new tools, especially for greater fragile skin protection of the elderly, including the discussion of new product components and dissemination of technological advances. that arise in this area.

Intervoice: A Photovoice Project Intergenerational

This article describes an Intergenerational Photovoice Project implemented in a Residential Structure for the Elderly (ERPI), in Portugal, in which four elderly people and four university students participated. The Project consisted of asking the elderly and intergenerational peers to photograph the surrounding reality.
