The protestant ethic and the formation of a sporting ethos

The present review depicts Steven Overman's book “Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Sport: How Calvinism and Capitalism Shaped America’s Games.” Under Weberian theoretical lineage and with direct influence of Allen Guttmann, the author sees puritan doctrines of the reformist period as both consequence and cause of the American spirit of capitalism. By proposing seven Calvinistic virtues as essential features of Protestant ethic, Overman demonstrates how they culminated in the establishment of American institutions, including those related to the sphere of sport. By relating virtues and doctrines coming from the reform in the American ethos, the author identifies his correspondences in the spirit of sport, demonstrating how school and college competitions, the Olympic movement and the professionalization of clubs and athletes commune with the USA’s capitalism and Protestantism.

Sportivity, melancolia, nationalism and disability: the photographic coverage of the paralympic games through the lenses of Folha de São Paulo (1992 - 2016)

This study aimed to characterize the image representation of sport and Paralympic athletes in the photographic coverage of the “Folha de São Paulo” newspaper during the Paralympic Games from 1992 to 2016. The study was quanti-qualitative, descriptive and exploratory and was based on the framework theory. There has been an increase in the number of photographs published over the years, and some of the main characteristics of the photos are: athletes' sportsmanship; melancholy associated with the deficiency; promotion of nationalism; and spectacularization of the grotesque, and the cyborg. The polysemous character of the representations propagated in the photographs reveals some of the complexities involved in conceiving disabled athletes and the need to better qualify the media for future coverage of Paralympic sport.

Ken Loach's collaborative work in cinema

The article begins with an analysis of the initial scene of the film I, Daniel Blake by the British filmmaker Ken Loach, to discuss the context in which the filmmaker's career began, amid the English debate about the legacies of Naturalism in literature and cinema. The article then turns to some of the practical consequences of this discussion of the collaborative working methods adopted by the director to ensure what he calls "portrait authenticity of the life of the English working classes."

The Mathematician and the cockroach

Three friends meet, not exactly in the same space and time. They talk about their lives, professions, demands and daily tasks. A 13th scenario is the mathematical preparation of mathematics teachers. Another 26th is a way of problematizing research policies and aesthetics in the area of Mathematics Education - provoking some sparks, inventing (being invented) other possibilities. Any other scenario can be produced, depending on the pact that each reader, I say author of this text, may be interested. Anguish, contradictions, suspensions, deconstructions, circumstances of initial teacher training and modes of production/invention research in Mathematics Education are produced. This is the first act. Small phrases (can) provoke some sensations, intensities, demands for (possible) other ways of producing meanings. They do not explain, nor even systematize, anything. They are only, and because they are, they are possible possibilities. They do not indicate, they affect. They do not explain, they leave in suspension. This is the second act. Perhaps, fiction may offer other possibilities for problematizing (and problematizing ourselves) our cultural practices and our theorization movements. One way of seeing, producing, inventing, being affected, and feeling what about the other can have an effect on me – always in attempts to put our identities at risk. Fiction as process, as movement. Just other.

Body's absent presence

The behavior of those involved and immersed subjects in virtual environments have been configured new paradigms on the digital tools and literary texts in the virtual environment. In this sense, it is important to understand how this relationship transforms the world perceptions of the individuals involved in this multi-possibilities called cyberspace and that has been constructing a subject-machine relationship. I propose to discuss some relations between the “self” culture and about the interpersonal relations mediated by virtual environments and machines. The idea here is that we move into a configuration of deterritorialized and hypercorporal relations that go beyond the “self” of the physical plane.

Global water (un)sustainability and the human right to water

The inadequate use of the water resources in some regions of the planet added to the effect brought by the climatic changes has caused periods of drought and consequently the water unavailability leading to the scarcity. Considering that water is necessary for human survival on Earth, States must guarantee access to quality water for their population. However, this guarantee is not always possible when the poor management of water resources is perceived in some countries. This is the issue faced by this work that adopts the deductive approach and the bibliographical and documentary technique.

Migration from a Dialectical and Historical Materialist perspective

The large and growing contingent of migrants in the world today who move in different directions, occupying a peripheral place in terms of space, occupation, education and access to public services, leads us to problematize analyses about the phenomenon of migration. In this direction, we present some theoretical supports for research about this theme. The objective is to contribute with analyses that seek to go beyond appearances and capture the multiple determinations of the concrete, that is, to understand the reality that moves workers and their families to migrate. We understand that migratory movements accompany the process of capital expansion in the direction of accumulation, given that capitalist accumulation produces a population of surplus labor, according to Marx, which is available to be sent in different locations and production sectors. We conclude that the category of migration a historical materialist perspective is a phenomenon that originates in the expropriation of the means of subsistence and the exploitation of labor, and therefore, cannot be understood outside of these processes. In this perspective, we use the categories of accumulation, commodity, industrial reserve army and spatial expansion of capital to analyze the movement of workers.

Liquefaction of the Social Protection Network in Brazil

What are the impacts of the austerity reforms on the social protection network and thelegacy of Social Security, enshrined in the 1988 Constitution? The hypothesis of thisarticle is that Brazil's recent political economy demonstrates the antinomy betweenfinancial capitalism and representative mass democracy, which results in the corrosionof social protection policies and the regulation of capital / labor relations. The politicaleconomy is being immunized against democratic grassroots pressure in a clear disputeover public funds and the growing commodification and deregulation of lucrativeprivate activities in the social protection arena. This movement is favored by theexistence of a political and electoral system that perpetuates the conservative elites ofvarious shades in a reactionary coalition that hinders the progress made in the expansionof citizenship and economic, cultural and social rights. Through national andinternational studies, as well as the analysis of political measures, we seek to justify thishypothesis.

Experiences experienced in teaching and immanent subjectivities configuring the profile of Physical Education teachers in early childhood education

The study aims to present a typology based on educational practices, experiences and immanent subjectivities of Physical Education teachers who work in municipal schools of Early Childhood Education in Cuiabá-MT. Being subject of the research Physical Education teachers who work in Early Childhood Education. The sample consisted of 50 teachers who answered a questionnaire and 10 teachers who participated in the interview. The investigative course allowed us to analyze the educational practices and the understanding of the teachers' experiences. If the experience is something that makes more relation to the present lived than to the future, still as a coming to be, it is the realization that the educative practice of the teachers can be related to the idea of the present being permeated by the possibility of already being to be living an eternal Still-No. We can glimpse new practices if they delineate, insofar as experience is something that is being configured in the actions of the subjects-teachers with the child-bodies in which teaching can be losing the primacy over learning.

Senses and perceptions of migrant children in Florianópolis

This study analyzes the senses and perceptions migrant children have about their migration processes. The study was conducted at a public pre-school in the municipal school system of Florianópolis and included participation of 13 migrant children and one native child from the city from four to seven years old. The data collection instruments were a questionnaire and interviews conducted with their families. Based on dialectical historic materialism, the categories totality and particularity of the migratory social phenomenon were used. The study sought in the historic-cultural perspective the bases for understanding the perceptions of the children. The children’s statements reveal how they learn about the totality of current social relations, making clear the social class that they belong to. Moreover, these statements also indicate how social contradictions determine the objectivity of social life and its subjectivities beginning at an early age.

The samurai myth in Japan’s imaginary: men and gods in the plot of the senses

The study indicates that the Japanese resignified the image of the samurai in the Meiji era. This artifice proved to be effective in unifying the new Japanese identity within and outside Japan with a focus on Yamato Damashi, whose strength even outside Japan maintained the sense of belonging. The study indicates that this feeling is reinvigorated by the practice of martial arts such as karate where ritual and ritual values reinforce subjective belief in a common origin.

Reflection about the emancipatory method of teaching in Physical Education

It is a reflection about the method of intellectual emancipation exposed by Jacques Rancière and it's possible contributions to Physical Education in higher education. We perceive that the methods used in a discipline of the course resemble the method of brutalization, which according to the author, do not contribute to the critical formation of students as constituents of a democratic society.

Multiplicity of Mathematical Kknowledge in the Rural Education

This paper aims to address the multiplicity of mathematical knowledge in the context of rural education. Two questions guide the discussion: (a) There is much talk of “knowledge accumulated by mankind”; what knowledge is this and what “mankind” is this?; (b) What knowledge has space in school curricula (especially in mathematics classes)? With regard to question (b), an analysis is made of a collection of textbooks intended for rural schools; and, to answer question (a), in a movement of “going to local knowledge”, the tasks proposed by teachers of initial years of elementary school in a rural school are analyzed, and the statements of these teachers about these tasks. With this discussion, one argues in favor of non-belief in the uniformity of mathematical knowledge, but in the multiplicity of knowledge.

STS or STSE: what do the researches (dont) say about environment and environmental education?

We present a survey about the scientific production on STS/STSE existing in the main periodicals and events of the area of Education in Sciences and Environmental Education from 2010 to 2016. We analyzed 27 papers that belong to the STSE perspective, aiming at verifying the reasons, assumptions and interests that mark the choice of researchers for this denomination, as well as the meanings attributed to the Environment and Environmental Education. The results shows that we can consider that there is still no consensus in the area regarding the understanding of the assumptions and characteristics present in the STSE perspective in comparison to the STS perspective, and there is also a variety of meanings attributed to the Environment. Besides, there are real possibilities of a productive interface with the Environmental Education, in which are highlighted tendencies conservationist or critical in the treatment of the environmental themes present in the researches.
