Aspects of hybridism in Joseph Conrad's Almayer's Folly and Heart of Darkness Aspectos de hibridismo em Almayer´s Folly e Heart of Darkness de Joseph Conrad

In the light of concepts put forth by Cultural Criticism the essay discusses  Joseph Conrad´s novels Almayer´s Folly and Heart of Darkness as stagings of the conflicts inherent in the syncretic nature of all culture.  In the first novel,  Nina, the offspring of an interracial marriage, is analyzed   as a projection of the problems of  hybridism. The theme recurs in Heart of Darkness, in the figure of the “harlequin”, whose mixed ancestry  makes  him the butt of  continuous abuse. A fictional anticipation of Michel Serres´ allegorical harlequin , the half-caste proves close to three Conradian characters:  Nina, in Almayer´s Folly, and, in Heart of Darkness,  Kurtz and Marlow, the  narrator. Conrad´s two novels thus  nod to each other as mutually illuminating references, fictional premonitions of the key postcolonial category of hybridity.

Distribution patterns and abundance of limnic gastropods in the municipality of Acaraú, Ceará: evaluating aspects of the Theory of Island Biogeography

According to the Theory of Island Biogeography, the relation species to area and spatial isolation can influence the distribution of species in habitats. Thus, lentic ecosystems are used to provide information on local mechanisms of diversity of organisms, including mollusks. The present study evaluated the ecological and biogeographic aspects of limnic mollusks by assessing the influence of the size and distance of water bodies on the distribution of species. Sampling was carried out in lagoons, classified by perimeter and with different distances, in Acaraú, Ceará. A total of 2,067 gastropods were collected; they were distributed in six families, six genera and nine species and included the planorbids Biomphalaria glabrata and Drepanotrema cimex, which had not yet been recorded for Ceará. No significant differences were observed in richness, abundance and diversity in relation to the size of the lagoons. However, there was a tendency for higher indices in medium-sized ponds, which may be due to intermediate disturbances. Similarities in community structure between nearby water bodies were not observed, which can be explained by the ease of dispersion of species due to flooding during rainy periods. The data presented here may be important for understanding the mechanisms responsible for the distribution patterns of limnic mollusks in northeastern Brazil.

The United States and the negotiations on the creation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

The literature on human rights usually owes to NGOs mobilizations lead by Amnesty International the consensual approval, in 1993, of the creation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the main responsible for human rights inside the UN. However, there is another important point to be considered to understand this approval: the changing of the US position regarding the issue. During the Cold War, US was just a reticent supporter of the proposal due to the prioritization of the geopolitical calculations of the period. Ended the Cold War up, the solid opposition of the USSR on the creation of the post disappeared. Thus, Clinton’s administration, which intended to show itself as the responsible for a positive improvement of the US human rights foreign policy when compared to the H. Bush, became the main sponsor of the creation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The goal of this article is not to deny the relevance of the NGOs mobilizations in 1993, but only to show that that historical context created the conditions to the US pragmatically takes the lead of the proposal.

From the Cuban Revolution to the Obama Era: from strains to normalization

Since the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the relations between the United States with Cuba have entered an era of antagonism and political tensions. After more than half a century of close intimacy, both countries come to be enemies inside the context of the Cold War. As a result, the United States engaged in an austere strategy of foreign policy towards Cuba, ceasing diplomatic relations and imposing a commercial embargo that would come to perpetuates itself for more than fifty years. Even with the end of the bipolar conflict the antagonist relations between the countries remained unchanged, and Cuba remained in isolation thanks to the American embargo. It was only in 2014 that the Obama administration betted on a different strategy, breaking with decades old political paradigm and promoting a rapprochement with Cuba. Still, the process of normalization was never fully complete, and evidenced how the strategy of the United States foreign policy towards Cuba depends of different domestic actors and their diverse interests. To understand this phenomenon, it’s needed to comprehend how the old strategy was formed, why was it perpetuated and which were the conditions that led to be possible to break it. This article brings a historical study of the main events that happened between Cuba and the United States since the Revolution, seeking to better explain the formation and changes of the American foreign policy strategy.

“God wants me to be president”: The role of the Bible Belt in the policy against terror during the George W. Bush governments

This article seeks to identify aspects of the relation between religion and foreign policy in the United States. It is believed that this relation is decisive for understanding the international politics of George W Bush's government (2001-2009). It happens due to the biblical weight of the Bible Belt. This region comprises predominantly conservative and Christian southernmost area of the United States. In this way, we affirm that religion is decisive in the American political context. Thus, the "biblical belt" also exerts influence in foreign policy, legitimizing through discourse part of the American positions in the international scene and in the structures of global governance (2001-2009).

The United States from H. Bush to Donald J. Trump (1989/2017): Political Dynamics of Consensus and Polarization.

Since the end of the Cold War, United States internal and external policies are presenting trends of poltical polarization and party fragmentation, that put into check the continuity of consensus in the domestic agenda and international relations. In this context, the social and economic transformation that begun in the 1970s still is heightened which points to the reconfiguration of political forces in a country which is getting more and more divided. In this framework, phenomenon such as the rise of neoconservatives, the polarization of partidary projects, renewal and continuity, overlap. The goal of the article is to understand and debate this dynamics, presenting the main characteristics of the XXI century and how it led to the election of Donald J. Trump as the President of the US.

Donald Trump and Neoconservantism

The relation of neoconservatives with the Republican Party emerged when they decided to support the candidacy of Ronald Reagan. Since then, the group is being identified as part of the north-American republican spectrum. In 2016 elections some exponents of the neoconservative thinking were opposed to the election of Donald Trump even supporting the democrat candidate Hillary Clinton. By examining the literature produced by the conservatives themselves in relation to Trump and also the literature regarding neoconservativism, we tried to understand the support for Clinton in the light of “neocon” thought and what it means. Analyzing the main issues of the ideology that guide their actions and discourses, added to the current literature produced about the studied theme, it is possible to reason that the support for the democratic candidate is much more consistent with this line of thought. However, this should not represent a fleeing of neoconservatives from the Republican party.

Junior company in the work of the professional consultant of Librarianship: a case study from the Federal University of Goiás

It aims to identify if the students of the Librarianship Course of the Federal University of Goiás have a consultant profile provided by the resources offered through the Junior Company of the course. The study has as its main questioning to verify if the Junior Company has contributed to the professional background of the future librarians of the state of Goiás. To do so, seeks to identify the main landmarks that tell the story of the junior librarianship company of the Federal University of Goiás, it analyzes the intentions of undergraduate librarians to work in the business line and the influence of the Junior Company in the consulting practice. It utilizes a bibliographic procedure to underlie the ideas presented and with the presupposition to understand the issue in detail, a case study is delimited with a quantitative and qualitative approach through a descriptive-explanatory method of data collection by applying questionnaires and conducting interviews with professors and undergraduate students. It may be concluded that the students of the Librarianship course have an understanding of what a Junior Company is and how it is able to offer knowledge about consulting activities for future librarians in the state of Goiás, besides their willingness and  interest in participating in the Junior Company, as well as acting in the consulting area. However, it is identified that the existing Junior Company is not active and is not able to offer intellectual and professional subsidies to students who have an interest in being part of it, due to the lack of disclosure of the company and to the non-performance of activities once its functions have terminated.

Digital Information and Communication Technologies in Physics Education teaching courses at a federal public university: “uses” established by professors in the undergraduate programs

This  study  aims  to  analyze  the  uses  that  professors  of  undergraduate physics education courses at a Federal Public University make of Digital Information  and  Communication  Technologies  (Digital ICT)  in  their teaching.  This   is   an  exploratory  study  and  uses  documents  and  semi-structured interview as sources of data collection. By the means of the Discursive Textual Analysis four emergent categories were also identified in this study: (i) The place of Digital ICT subjects in the Physics Education undergraduate course; (Ii) Uses of techniques; (Iii) Uses of technology in the  education  process  of  the  undergraduate  students – relation with the education processes of the course professor; (IV) What network is there in this education process? The results indicate that the uses of Digital ICT in the  undergraduate  Physics  Education  course  involve  different  ways  of usage that are created in a dynamic setting based on techniques that are not necessarily pure techniques but are interwoven with theoretical and methodological aspects of teaching and learning, the educational process designed  for  its  development,  and  the  dialogue  established  among  the possible educational contexts for the use of technologies. Moreover, we discuss the perspective of universalization of the interconnection network since  the  use  of  the  Internet  (in the dimension of collective  knowledge construction)  is  limited  in  the  University  and  in  the  context  of  k-12 education.

Crime analysis in global terrorism database

This is a descriptive study from quantitative bivariate and multivariate analyzes, which aims to conduct a Crime Analysis in the Global Terrorism Database to understand the patterns of terrorist attacks in Brazil. A total of 262 records were collected from this database and, on these, non-parametric tests and Multiple Correspondence Analysis were applied. Using the PASW Statistics 18® and Microsoft Office Excel 2007® tools, the results show that the "Death Squad" is the group that produce the higher numbers of victims and that armed attacks by firearms are the ones with the highest number of fatalities. It is suggested the continuation of similar studies on national or international databases, using Data Mining heuristics to establish comparisons with the results obtained in this study.

Model for evaluating the maturity degree of value-buying practices in product development

With the popularization of the Internet and the change in consumer profile, in which they are more informed and participatory, companies have realized the opportunity to interact closely with customers. The co-creation of value then arises. Value creation allows the consumer to actively participate in value creation with the company, resulting in assertiveness in the launch of products, better understanding of the customer, faster product launches, etc. However, the use of this strategy is still unclear, and this is the purpose of this work, to propose a model for measuring the maturity in value creation, with which companies can identify what is necessary to include the client in the innovation process, and the improvements needed to achieve a higher level of maturity in this activity. In order to create the model, a bibliographic study was carried out and for its evaluation, a single case interview and a statistical analysis were carried out with a sample of 13 industries. The proposed model is unprecedented. After the interview and analysis of the data, it was concluded that there is correlation between the variables of the model and that part of the variables explain the results of the co-creation. That is, the maturity model for value creation (MMCV) was valid, since it presented good results, even with the limitation of the sample number.
