Description and search: metadata as infrastructure
The first and original use of metadata is for describing documents. XML, the Dublin Core and MARC library catalog records are examples. The name "metadata" (beyond or with data) and the popular definition "data about data" is based on this use. A second use of metadata is to form organizing structures by means of which documents can be arranged. These structures can be used both to search for individual documents and also to identify patterns within a population of documents. The second role of metadata involves an inversion of the relationship between document and metadata. These structures can be considered infrastructure.

The concept of "artistic text" and its importance for the Documentation Sciences
This article develops the theoretical itinerary that, having the communicative nature of the artistic images as the starting point, permits to formulate, with epistemological inputs coming from different semiotic and semiological approaches, the concepts of “artistic text” and “pictorial text”. Such concepts have great importance for the Documentation Sciences, because they permit to consider each artistic image as an aesthetic object bearer of a speech susceptible of being analyzed; to situate each one of them in the context that makes them legible, responding to their origin, use and typology; to investigate the correlations that have place between their aesthetic architecture and the communicative function that they perform; and, finally, to elaborate a model of analysis oriented towards the production of documental representations, which permit to communicate and recover the analyses made within the information systems in which such artistic images are developed.

Repository conversations
For a long time the importance of informal communication is admitted (e.g. email, out of question) in the context of creation and share of scientific knowledge. However, there have been few initiatives that try to exploit the advantages of the existence of an informal communication layer that complements the classic mechanisms of formal scientific communication. This article describes the developments that resulted of the DSpace-dev @ University of Minho project, focusing especially on the Commenting add-on: An extension developed for the DSpace platform, which has as an objective to provide Institutional Repositories with informal communication capacities. The article approaches, in addition, some ideas that can be taken as a basis for future developments about this subject matter, namely: To transform the add-on into multi-repository and multiplatform, to manage to each comment to be accompanied by descriptive metainformation in order to facilitate its location by search engines, and to improve significantly its graphical user interface.

Information Science: informational concept and disciplinary integration
The aim of this article is to discuss the constituent aspects of Information Science taking two parameters into account: the informational thought, that identifies the solution given at different historical moments to the questions concerning the access and the use of registered contents, and the extension of the change of modern to post-modern science, when the name of the discipline was coined almost at the same moment as the attribution of traces that resulted in the field’s lack of identity. A conceptual synthesis of modern and post-modern science is presented, supporting the recognition of the informational thought of Naudé, Dewey, Otlet and Sola Price. The rescue of ideas showed fruitful, allowing us to recognize important interventions in the area that evidence the dynamics of information, limited by the mechanical reading carried out for years. Meanwhile, it suggests that the concept of disciplinary integration is more appropriate to provide the development of the field.

Knowledge map of Information Science: implications for the future of the field
This collective paper incorporates eleven position papers on implications of the "Knowledge Map of Information Science,” a Critical Delphi study conducted in 2003-2005 and published as a series of four articles (ZINS, 2007 a, b, c, d). The Delphi study captured the deliberations of 57 leading information science scholars from 16 countries to provide (1) definitions of the fundamental concepts of data, information knowledge and message, (2) alternative conceptions of the broad information science domain, (3) different classificatory mappings of the field, and (4) comprehensive mappings of information science. Overall, the Knowledge Map provides an early 21st century snapshot of the field that should help guide future research, educational programming, publishing, and other professional and scholarly thrusts. Future information science mapping research should be done periodically, including additional Delphi studies and assessments of the degree of the field’s expansion and probable division into sub-fields. Alternative methodologies for mapping the expanding information science universe and its synergies with other fields of knowledge should also be explored.

Scientific indicators on literature in Bibliometry and Scientometry through social networks
This work explores Social Networks map generation in the area of the Metric Studies, Bibliometry and Scientometry. This kind of map show (i) index of co-authors by area ISI, (ii) comparative of the documentary typology of registries source by citation, (iii) which authors have made the biggest scientific contribution, (iv) authors which have the biggest citation, (v) the documents more mentioned and (vi) the more relevant magazines related to the information consumption. The evaluation had been modeled by centrality and frequency, inquired amongst 635 registers rescued on the thematic. The main registers source has been the packages of the Institute for Scientific Information (Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities), and the studied period goes from 1975 to 2005. To realize the data treatment we used CiteSpace application, which has given the relation maps, a methodology of documentary control, developed by Efrain-García.

Indexation and abstract of digital documents and multimedia: techniques and procedures
The production of digital documents and multimedia remodeled the abilities and attitudes of the producers, transmitters and users of information imposing the need of integrated approach between theory and practice of the processes of the content analysis, representation and recuperation of digital documents and multimedia. From this presupposed, the current work, distributed in 11 chapters, details the changes - structural and of input – in the production of documents which lead to the re-structuration of the document al organization. At this point, for an adequate processing of the multimedia systems it is necessary to integrate the iconic, literal and auditory languages, being that this integration propitiates features of interactivity, ramification, transparency and navigation (interactividad, ramification, transparency y navigation), that are related directly to the system user.

Theories about technology accepentace: why the users accept or reject the information technology?
The acceptance and use of information technology is a subject that has received the attention of researchers and professionals in the Computer Science, Information Systems and Information Science, because the prospect that a well-developed system will be used, since start with the assumption that good solutions in software, can bring competitive advantage to businesses and individuals. Understanding why people use or discard computers has become one of the most challenging issues in research on information systems. In literature, it is possible to identify various theories that attempt to predict the impact of technology on human behavior however this article will make a brief review of literature on three theories. They are: Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and finally Technology Accepentace Model (TAM), model which will better explained, because it is the best known and used in the area of information systems.

The indexing at the internet
It is presented an analysis of the presence of indexing at the Internet supported by the idea that good part of the basic pillars in the ones which this web of computers is based is impregnated in higher or lower measure by indexing. The pillars are the metadata, the searchers, the users and the web positioning. Each one of these elements is reviewed to prove the approach which is accomplished the one is denominated Universe of the Web Indexing.

Information literacy in Portugal: some results of a research project
A paper present some data about a project which, although focused on the specific case of Portugal, intents to make a scientific approach of the challenges of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and its impact in the field of the information literacy, considering the actual context of the Information Society. The main questions that it intents to answer are: understand how the university students face the new competences required by the creation of the EHEA; know how these students are prepared in terms of information competences, in three different moments, i.e., prior to the university, during the university frequency period and at the end of the university degree. The inter and transdiscisplinary approach between the Education, Cognitive Sciences and Information Science are clearly stated in the epistemological and theoretical model that supports it, profiting of the interaction between information needs produced in the educational context and the student’s informational universe and its dynamics, without forgetting to consider the connections of student’s informational behavior with their personal and social context and demands. The study will be performed on a national scale, in order to allow comparisons between regions with different development levels. The sample will include students from both study cycles. The methodology used in this study will be divided in two areas, qualitative and quantitative research. The qualitative research will permit to obtain precious indicators about the students’ information behavior, expectations, needs and use of information. The indicators obtained in qualitative research will be used to design questionnaires, which will to be performed in 17 high schools and 17 universities, with an estimated sample of approximately 2000 students. The final result of this research will be the design of an informational behavior map, at the university level, and the development of a model concerning the promotion of information competences in Portuguese university students.

The epistemologial dimension of Information Science and its impact on Library and Archival education
Epistemology is the study of the possibility and nature of human knowledge and, as agencies that are concerned with the records of that knowledge; now in both electronic and paper media it seems reasonable to explore the epistemology of library and information work and education for the information occupations. It is clear that, whatever our understanding of the way in which knowledge is created among humans, the records of that knowledge have some 'real' existence - knowledge, that is, what is in the intellectual apparatus of the individual (or 'between two ears' as Drucker puts it) may be socially constructed, but what can be recorded of that knowledge, that is, what we otherwise call 'information', takes a 'real' form. The 'real' form may be difficult to see, as in the case of the symbols cut by a laser on a CD-ROM, or the bits recorded on a hard disc, but they are there. This paper will consider the consequences of a realist epistemology for library and archival science and for education in these fields.

Lotka law applied to the scientific production of Information Science area
We introduce an application of Lotka Law at whole of authors with publication in field of "Information Science", between 1996 and 2007. The application executed applied the methodology of Lee Pao (1985). It was selected every authors who appears in authors camps, doesn’t make any cut in the distribution and the estimate of critical values was been calculate using the proposal formula by Nicholls (1989). The results show us the data: one pending equal a "-2,75", the obtained it is lower in the work of Voos (1974), as in the Sen, Taib e Hassan (1996), in this camp; a percentage of authors, executors of one work only, it is equal a 79% and a excellent adjust of the Lotka Law, to be application at the Kolmogorov-Smirnov.
