Information and knoledge organizational audit: genesis of an integration

Since the decade of 80 when the information management as a resource had a higher emphasis, it also aroused the need to deepen the control measures of such information. This way appeared the informational audit with different focuses. One decade later, the organizations evaluated that the work with information was not enough, but that people and their knowledge marked differences. Then they began to study the phenomenon of the management processes associated to the organizational knowledge, generating also different kinds of audit to this resource. If between the information and the knowledge exist skidding borders, the same may also occur among the audits in both the resources. In fact when an information audit is made in any manner the knowledge is present and vice versa. Therefore, this route presents us the option to think in the integration of both the focuses in an integral methodology which may develop in different organizations. This article introduces us to these issues and justifies the need to count on an integral methodology to the development of these audits in organizational level.

Scientific colaboration network in "Metrical Studies": a co-authorship study using the SciELO information Science periodicals

This study is aimed at analyzing the scientific collaboration network in the Information Science area, regarding the theme “metrical studies”, based on institutional co-authorships in periodicals published on line by Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), electronic library that comprises a selected collection of Brazilian scientific periodicals, in the following publications: Ciência da Informação and Perspectivas em Ciência da Informação. The adopted research procedure was the survey of published numbers, including a total of 53 papers related to the topic under study. Initially, 388 papers were worked on, and 53 of them (13,7%, between the two periodicals) are related to this topic. Software Pajek was used in order to construct the scientific collaboration network based on co-authorship, and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for cluster analysis, by using Ward’s method and the distance measures were squared Euclidean with the standardized variables. The data were presented as an aggregation of communities, sometimes isolated, other times forming a configuration of a scientific collaboration network already established, but not dense.

Documentation as one of the origins of the Information Science and a fertile basis for its grounding

This article aims to explore the documentary principles as equivalents to the core matters proposed to the Information Science, as a way to promote the debate about its groundings. The study is justified because it considers that the perception over the identity crisis in Information Science is oriented by literature strongly based on specific axis, which engender partial views, incapable of constituting articulated parts of a whole. As methodology, it reviews the literature and discusses the history of Information Science, considering it prior to the emergence of this designation, and deals with its disciplinarity, presenting interdisciplinary frames, which are significantly consolidated. Besides, it studies the matter of the designations for the area. The study enables us to notice that the stir which involves the matter of identity of Information Science is not relevantly expressed in the literature and in the professional practices, which are oriented by Documentation, and which has presented, simultaneously, focus and density along the time. The history of Documentation permits us to question the discourses over the lack of consensus in Information Science and over the fragile central nature due to its technical dimension and to the supposed fluidity, intrinsic to its limits and borderline areas. It concludes that the documentary principles are a basic part of the grounds of the Information Science and are emblematic of its identity unit.

The people and the information technologies in the management knowledge: the ENANCIB as "enabling context"

Each time less considered a fad the knowledge management (KM), as more present in the organizations. Some definitions of the KM point out the technological solutions through the concept turned to the knowledge storing others value the human element due to the knowledge sharing. The goal of this research was to raise similar characteristics in the way the organization have worked the KM, supported the research presented at the Encontro Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação (ENANCIB), considered an "enabling framework", fitting them to two possibilities of management: people and technology. The research is characterized in relation to the design, as exploratory and descriptive study, and in relation to the nature as research of qualitative and quantitative approaching been defined as a kind of bibliographic and field study, with the intention to analyze the scientific production about KM. They were defined like variable, the characterization of the articles published in the ENANCIB in the period 2008/2009, about the insertion of the KM in the WG-4, the evolution of the KM in the WGs, the role of the people in the KM and the role of the IT tools applied to the KM. The results permitted to conclude that the KM has been spreading in a testimonial way, not only in the corridors of the organizations but also in the “enabling context” promoted by the managers and researchers who produce the ENANCIB, adopting as central and defining characteristic – the human capital – and his interfaces with the IT and the Information Science (IS).

Interfaces between linguistics, termilogy and documentation

Presents reflections on the interface between Linguistics, Documentation and Terminology, highlighting the aspects that are related to the proposal of pedagogical procedures aimed at the education and training of the documentalist. The superiority of natural language is underscored as the original place of the signified to show its privileged role for accessing knowledge, to which teaching and learning methods should correspond, leading to an understanding of the place of specialist languages as well as those of documentalist activities. The proposal of Documentary Linguistics is discussed which, in dialogue with Terminology, seeks to highlight the functions of onomasiological paths – from emission to conceptualization (from the concept to the term) – alongside semasiological ones – from reception and interpretation (from the term to the concept), in the education and training of the documentalist. This is followed by a brief synthesis of a didactic-pedagogical experiment.

Seeking and reading patterns of schorlarly articles: a study with brazilian graduate students in education

This article presents part of a larger study on the use of reference sources to perform bibliographical search by graduate students in Education. Data relating to the use of the scientific journals by these students are presented and discussed. Sixty Education graduate students, 28 Master degree and 32 Doctoral, answered an electronic questionnaire. The students indicated the types of articles usually read and the importance attributed to each one. For each of treated themes in the electronic questionnaire, data are initially presented and analyzed in the set of the 60 participants of the study and then compared between master and doctoral students. Were used the Chi-squared (?2) test, the Fisher exact test and the Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Research reports were more frequently pointed out but less valued in comparison to articles referring to critical review and theoretical essay. Methodological articles, appearing in fourth position according to reading frequency and importance attributed, are more valued by doctoral than master students. The students read these articles using different procedures. The possible reasons for the students valorizing the articles of critical review and theoretical essays are discussed. The present study intends to offer a contribution to understand the use of scientific information by students, describing some graduate students’ habits related to information seeking in scientific journals, and reading of the articles published.

Reading, library and formation politic of readers in Brazil

The hunger of reading in Brazil comes, historically, skirting several obstacles. One of the most frequent is the inexistence of continuous public politics and libraries, as public as from schools, which contribute to the cultural improvement, to the insertion of the population to the citizenship. The deployment trajectory of the library, public or from school, in our country reflects today in the performance of the public politics of reading delineated throughout the history of Brazil and, to the same, presents the portrait of the reader we have today and, mainly, suggests the base to the improvement of the formation politic of reader which the public school should adopt. This article, result of thesis defended in 2006 by Unesp/Marília is structured in three distinct stages: the first reports the invention of the writing-reading and its close relation with the humanity development. Then, it presents the coexistence of the Brazilian society with the book, the library and the reading since the arrival of the Portuguese people to the country in the first decades of the XX century and afterwards, to the current Brazilian programs of reading incentive and to the reader formation.

A multilingual and location evaluation of search engines for websites and searched for keywords

Search engines are competing to be seen as universal, consistent and language independent. In principle, users searching for information through the Internet should get consistent information regardless of the language of the words they are searching for and regardless of the language of the matching or the relevant documents. Nevertheless, the language should affect the sequence or the ranking of the retrieved results. In this project, several tools are built to evaluate words and statements in several languages. Results are evaluated and compared for possible correlation. Another tool is built to crawl websites from different languages and locations in order to measure several aspects of those websites. Results from both studies showed that while it seems that popular search engines are making very good progress toward building search engines that are language and location independent, however, there are some limitations and situations where search for results can be biased toward the popularity of the website language and/or location.

The indexing context for cataloging books using a sociocognitive approach

We evaluated study of the indexing process in the cataloging at university libraries, using a socio-cognitive approach to analyze procedures, difficulties and perceptions of librarians, users, and managers. The methodology consisted of the Individual and Group Verbal Protocols applied in university libraries. The results were the absence of procedures for book subject analysis and representation, incompatibility of indexing language, and problems of subject retrieval from the catalog. We have concluded that is tendency of catalogs to act as databases. Therefore, the cataloguer should present a posture of commitment similar to that of an indexer who works in the production of these bases.

Collections development of Maulana Azad Library (AMU) and Central Library of University of Delhi: a comparative study

The collections development includes planning for a systematic and rational construction of the general collection. The process includes several activities such as the user’s needs, evaluation of current collections, determination of a selection policy, management of selected items, analysis and storage of collection items incorporated into the planning and resource sharing. Thus the collections development isn't a singular activity, but a group of activities. Organizationally, academic libraries have at least two structured patterns for the collections development: centralized and decentralized systems. In a centralized collections development the full responsibility is of the central library, for the other hand the decentralized collections development are the responsibilities of the sector or department academic. This research was conducted to obtain an overview of the collections development in the Maulana Azad Library of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and in the Central Library of Delhi University (DU).

The Information Architecture positioning in IT governance

IT governance is supported by various models and standards such as COBIT, ITIL, ISO 20000 and ISO 27002. The main objective of these models and standards is to give transparency to the actions and processes of IT. In a short study of each them, we observed that they do not present in your body space for the information architecture. If one of the goals of the Information Architecture is to organize the information for decision making, how can this be out of context? This research aims to study the IT governance models in order to prepare a modification suggestion to place the information architecture in each one of them.

Library Computerization: nigerian reality

This paper is a recent ontological view of the concept of library computerization at a global perspective. The paper not only saliently x-rayed the processes involved with library computerization but also provided insight to the advantageous effect the novel trend has in eradicating illiteracy and promoting educational development through efficient library use especially among the developing countries of the world. Novel capabilities of library computerization such as increasing the moral/prestige of librarians, job creation/division of labor etc., vis-à-vis hindrances to actual library computerization were treated by the paper. However, that it is a global time bomb is factual as the paper portrayed the fact that it has universally breached the gap of educational development as obtained in the world between the most developed technological states and others.
