Visibility of african scholars in the literature of bibliometrics
This paper discusses the visibility of African scholars in the literature of Bibliometrics, as it appears in the Library and Information Science Abstract (LISA) from 1982-2010. Analysis was conducted on a list of 75 papers generated from the Abstract. The year-wise growth of the literature shows that single authorship dominates the literature, scoring 52% and the average number of publication per year was found to be 2.7. On the productivity of authors, Lotka’s formulation of inverse square law of scientific productivity was applied and found to be in harmony with the literature. Bradford-zipf Law for distribution of papers was also applied and found to be in conformity with the literature of Bibliometrics. Prolific authors were found to be 6 in number and their contributions falls between 3-16 papers within the 28 years period of the study. Information Science and its correlated areas:: a case study at the Federal University of Minas Gerais
This research contributes to the understanding of what Information Science is and how it is evolving by verifying the disciplines Information Science interacts with at the present time, as well as the breadth and intensity of these relationships. The research uses two bibliometric studies of the scientific journals utilized by researchers in the field. In the first study, citation analysis assessed 433 journals cited in the bibliographies of 18 theses and 39 dissertations from the Graduate Program of Information Science of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. These were first examined to determine their distribution in nine categories representative of large areas of knowledge. Next, subareas to which each journal pertained were also identified. In the second study, 316 journals from the field of Information Science, which the CAPES Portal of Scientific Journals subscribed to, were identified and analyzed in terms of the other areas of knowledge to which they were also designated by the Portal. The results of the citation analysis revealed that 31.8% of 433 journals cited were interdisciplinary, 49.7% pertained to other areas of knowledge while 18.50% were classified solely as Information Science. The analysis of the data from second study revealed that 57% of the journals were classified solely as Information Science and 43% were classified simultaneously in more than one area. Results stemming from both studies show that computer science, administration and education are the disciplines most closely related to Information Science. The areas of knowledge to which Information Science most broadly relates are applied social sciences, human sciences and linguistics, literature and the arts.

The notion of the term "information": literature review
The literature review of the term ‘information’, starting from a terminological approach, has the aiming to identify traces which help in a better delimitation of the Information Science field. The comprehension of the identity characteristics of the Information Science is a conjectural need, observed in the context of the post- modernity on which the field tries to ‘consolidate itself’. The use of the guidance of the Terminology Communicative Theory, which considers the pragmatic and social aspect of the terms, was an important resource to stress out how the different perspectives of the term ‘information’ corroborate the construction of a thematic view of the Information Science area.

Barriers to Library and Information Science research: a study among research scholars
The study examines the barriers related to Library and Information Science. A structured questionnaire was designed and directly administered to the LIS Research Scholars who are currently involved in the Research in the Universities/Colleges of Tamil Nadu (India). A total of 124 questionnaires were distributed and 109 respondents have replied. The majority of common barriers faced by the respondents are ‘High Expenditure’, ‘Lack of Statistical Skills’, and ‘Inadequate of infrastructures’ and ‘Poor response in data collection’. The study is also recommended that the Universities/Colleges offered the research programmes should consider to reduce the expenditure in terms of fee structures for the research and also the schools/departments which offer the research programme should redesign the syllabus to include the skills required to carry out the research.
