Geographic and disciplinary distribution of the Brazilian's PHD community: patterns of the scientific collaboration structure

The study of national academic characteristics is an imperative task for the understanding of national scientific production and the creation of effective science policy. Using a dataset of more than 3.2 million Brazilian curricula, we explore the academic community of PhDs working in Brazil in order to identify characteristics of the whole national network and in the knowledge area level. We used metrics from social network analysis and text mining techniques, as well as the patterns of collaboration between areas and the regional distribution of PhDs. The results show different general characteristics of the PhDs working in each Brazilian state and knowledge area, according to the social and economic characteristics of each of the five Brazilian regions. Different interaction profiles were described, like a less connected network in Linguistics, Letter, and Arts, in which each researcher is related, on average, to less than three other PhDs; on the opposite side, Agricultural Sciences each researcher is related, on average, to more than nine other PhDs of the network. It is clear that besides the capital and one or other major city, the Northeast Region is devoid of PhDs, a situation that is particularly problematic for the most destitute region of Brazil.

Alternative and traditional indicators of the Brazilian Feminist Studies Journal

The connection of traditional and alternative indicators of academic impact has been recommended by scholars in the field of metric studies as they are considered complementary and offer a more complete picture of the evaluation of research results. From this perspective, the present descriptive exploratory study aimed to analyze the correlation coefficient between the traditional and alternative impact of Revista Estudos Feministas. The sample comprised the period from 2001 to 2018. Analysis data were obtained from the Dimensions database via API. 1,296 texts with 2,609 citations and 5,982 altmetric data were analyzed. The results showed that Mendeley obtained a positive evaluation in the correlation of Pearson's coefficient when compared with the quantity of published articles and with the citation and visibility indicators. The study found that altmetric data is 4.6 times larger than traditional data, although fluctuating it is important for indicating the tools and networks where readers and users share scientific content.

The use of econometric models in studies of Eletricity Generation from biomass: a bibliometric analysis

The present research investigated the utilization of econometric models in studies related to the generation of electricity from biomass, through a bibliometric analysis. The general objective of the study was to analyze the publications, from 1987 to 2018, that explored the potential of econometric models involving biomass for electricity generation. Additionally, it was intended to investigate the most cited articles and authors, seeking to verify the most relevant themes and the main econometric techniques used in the analyses; verify the countries most engaged in these researches, drawing a parallel with their current energy strategies; identify future trends of studies in this area. For this, the SCOPUS database was used, selecting articles in English, from the keywords “Econometrics, biomass and Electricity”. The data collected with the literature review were compiled on thematic maps, with the help of the Vosviewer software, which realized analysis of citation, co-citation, co-authorship and keywords. SciMat software was also used, which generated from key terms, longitudinal strategic maps that allowed identifying future trends on the theme discussed in this article. The results indicated that the main research fronts in this field, are related to the use of econometrics to estimate the impacts of energy generation from biomass in variables such as economic growth, energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions.

A tool for assessing multiliteracy in higher education

This study describes the premises underlying Voremetur, a project conducted in the context of higher education. It hypothesises the need to support a competence education method adapted to new educational formulas (from e- to m-learning), new educational challenges (e-science, big data) and the convergent competences now characterised as info-communication literacy, which has favoured the transition from edu-communication to multiliteracy. Such competences should be organised into competence programmes, where the assessment of the beneficial results for learners and the university should be included as an essential element. The article discusses an assessment model for new literacies, including its conceptual framework, ideal evaluation tools and conversion into an ad hoc questionnaire. Lastly, the paper describes model application to a target group and analyses the results most relevant to information behaviour.

Research information system: Use of VIVO ontology in the context of Brazilian institutions

This paper analyzes the characteristics of VIVO-ISF ontology concerning its use in the domain of Brazilian institutions, aiming at the use of VIVO as institutional research information system in Brazil. The paper identified the objectives, scope and modelling characteristics of the ontology, taking into consideration characteristics in ontologies that benefit the development of web applications.  It also analyzed VIVO-ISF ontology in the context of its use to describe a Brazilian institution, represented by the Faculty of Library Sciences and Communication (Fabico), part of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Resources, bodies, activities and administrative positions of Fabico/UFRGS were identified as they were defined by legal documents, such as statutes and bylaws, and they were described according to VIVO-ISF ontology. The study concluded that VIVO-ISF has a well-defined conceptual framework that utilizes high level BFO ontology, which provides facilities to represent the universe of the academic domain and to perform extensions that incorporate local institutional features. The ontology also provides interoperability between different applications, since it reuses generic BFO classes and it selects classes of popular domain ontologies, such as Foaf, Event, BiBO. The ontology is also capable of representing a Brazilian academic institution, providing a well-defined semantic framework for web data integration that streamlines the process of interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaboration for the formation of research networks, including Brazilian institutions.

Latin American scientific production in information metric studies: bibliometric analysis from 2011 to 2016

This research aims to analyze the visibility and international impact of Latin American scientific papers in ?? Metric Studies of Information published from 2011 to 2016. It identifies the most productive countries, the journals that disseminated this research, the intensity of their scientific impact, and characterizes the scope of citations received at the national, regional and global level by applying citer analysis. As a research procedure, 1,115 papers were retrieved from the Scopus database, with at least one author from Latin America We focused on 1,107 papers produced by the 10 most productive. We identified 474 journals that published these papers. The journal core comprises 20 journals responsible for the dissemination of 380 (34%) of the paper corpus. Cluster analysis was used to understand the relationships among the 10 most productive countries. In order to verify the range of the science produced by the countries analyzed, country-based citer analysis was used. The cluster analysis revealed three groups of more homogenous countries regarding the volume and impact of research production and two isolated countries - Brazil and Peru. We concluded that the Latin American research is carried out by half of these countries, especially Brazil, accounting for more than half of this production.

Displaced archives: a mapping review: a mapping review

This article realises a mapping review on the topic “displaced archives”. The main problem is concerned to the absence of a clear conceptual framework about this topic, existing several terms related to the same phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to explore the literature in terms of characteristics and size, identifying main concepts, theories, sources and knowledge gaps. Searches were performed in the Web of Science database. As inclusion criteria, we extracted terms from archival terminology in English and scientific articles published between 1953 and 2018 in peer reviewed journals. Methodologically, the article combines mapping review with a scoping review. Of the 160 articles, 70 were included, published between 1962 and 2018. Themes associated with decolonization and secession, armed conflict and illicit trafficking predominate, related to international and sub-national issues. Qualitative studies, especially historical analysis and case studies, prevail. New concepts such as colonial archives, seized archives and expatriate archives that are not considered in archival terminography are emerging. To conclude, the concept of "displaced archives" remains invisible to the archival community, especially the lusophone archival community, that no scientific production on the topic was retrieved.

Application of web indicators to Latin American academic sites in Social Sciences

Brazilian open access journals in DOAJ: Business models and their financial sustainability

A variety of business models can be observed among open access journals. The purpose of this research was to map the business models of Brazilian open access journals registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), in order to assess their financial sustainability. The research method utilized was bibliographic and document research focusing on existing and possible business models for open access journals. The data was classified by research area. The analysis was made based on the current context of scientific research in Brazil, the literature and information obtained directly from the journals. The results show the prevalence of three business models, related to the article processing charges (APC). Only a small number of journals use these charges. Concerning the APC, there was a large variability between the values, indicating that there is no clear consensus about the ideal value. We conclude that the predominance of external funding demonstrates the economical vulnerability of the journals. The mixed business model, using financing and APC, appears as a viable model, but only as a temporary solution, exposing the need for a deeper discussion of the business models adopted by Brazilian open access journals.

Information mediation in sport: analysis of the performance of soccer athletes’ coaches in cearense professional football

This paper presents results of a research aimed to examine soccer coaches’ actions in order to understand how information mediation interferes on game systems presented by these professionals. This investigation is characterized as exploratory and is based on the methodological assumptions of the qualitative approach. Interviews were used to collect information because such technique allows interaction with the subjects of the research. The collected data were analyzed using the technique of content analysis with the establishment of two categories: the performance of soccer coaches and the information mediation in the game system. The results revealed that coaches, through experiences and perceptions on the sport and knowledge repertoires, can act as mediators of the soccer athletes and that the mediation interferes on game systems proposed by coaches because the interactions between coach and athlete, as well as the information exchanged through these interactions, develop athlete’s ability to adapt to the game system and also help them improve their performance on soccer matches. Therefore, these coaches use the support of the coaching staff to stimulate athletes to learn. They do this to improve their own performance regarding the players and create an environment of constant information interchange and experiences inside the team. The librarian, in this context, could be a differentiator at the sports area by assisting soccer coaches on their work of tactical information mediation involving the athletes.

Need, access and use of information as factors for quality of life for women in privacy of freedom

This paper presents research results on the need, access and use of information by women in deprivation of freedom, carried out in the women's wing of the João Chaves Penal Complex (CPJC) Natal - RN, questioning how such women interpret and construct the concept of quality of life. Therefore, it aims to analyze how the need, access and use of information, provided or not by CPJC, contribute to the (re) construction of the concept of quality of life by these women. It is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, case study type, instrumented by non-systematic participant observation and semi-structured interviews. After CPJC consent, interviews were conducted with 36 women who agreed to participate in the research whose data were analyzed from categories according to Bardin (2011). The intersection of concepts of the theory with the reality of the interviewees culminates in quite complex and sometimes contradictory statements. However, the relevance of information to improve quality of life is demonstrated, especially in environments where information has difficulties to circulate. Conclusively, women deprived of liberty do not have exactly what they want in terms of quality of life, but they do know what they want and express in order to achieve it.

Social epistemology in information studies: a consolidation

The present paper aims to provide new details and information on the intellectual context in which social epistemology was born, including aspects such as its theoretical influences, intellectual contexts, and main characteristics. As methodology it presents an analysis of the writings on social epistemology by Jesse Shera and Margaret Egan selected from different and sometimes rare sources and collection. After an the analysis, the paper addresses the relationship between the historical social epistemology proposed by Margaret Egan and Jesse Shera as a discipline to investigate the foundations of librarianship and the contemporary social epistemology proposed by Steve Fuller as a program of a “naturalistic approach to the normative questions surrounding the organization of knowledge processes and products.” Both these proposals are outlined as an interdisciplinary project that is based on both philosophical epistemology and the scientific sociology of knowledge.

The influence of the positive emotions in sharing of organizational knowledge: A systematic literature review

Knowledge Management is an area of proposing ways for an organization to capture, structure, and disseminate knowledge. The knowledge can be developed in the organizational environment, starting from the individual and shared in different groups.  However, it is necessary enabling an environment to make the knowledge shared. Nonetheless, an environment is not enough to stimulate knowledge sharing since other variables might influence the individuals' interaction, such as positive emotions. In this sense, this paper aims to present a systematic literature review in which identifies the studies published in national and international journals, seeking research which deals with knowledge sharing and positive emotions. We accomplished the systematic review following six steps. The results in this paper present an increasing number of publications regarding the topic between 2011 and 2020. On the other hand, this is still a topic that deserves the attention of researchers due to its influence in how people share their knowledge.

Rage against the machine learning: a critical approach to the algorithmic mediation of information

Before being an exaltation to Luddites (the English workers from the 19th century who actually destroyed textile machinery as a form of protest) or to some sort of technophobic movement, the provocative pun contained in the title of this article carries a methodological proposal, in the field of critical theory of information, to build a diagnosis about the algorithmic filtering of information, which reveals itself to be a structural characteristic of the new regime of information that brings challenges to human emancipation. Our analysis starts from the concept of mediation to problematize the belief, widespread in much of contemporary society, that the use of machine learning and deep learning techniques for algorithmic filtering of big data will provide answers and solutions to all our questions and problems. We will argue that the algorithmic mediation of information on the internet, which is responsible for deciding which information we will have access to and which will remain invisible, is operated according to the economic interests of the companies that control the platforms we visit on the internet, acting as obstacle to the prospects of informational diversity and autonomy that are fundamental in free and democratic societies.

Paradigmatic Archive: a reflection on the universal properties of Archival Institutions from the Archivo General das Indias

This paper aims to present the universals properties of the Archives, thought of as an archival institution, based on a priori philosophical reflection, to establish fundaments to determinate the graduation of these properties – and their maximum level, at the Paradigmatic Archive – and to confirm these properties through the forms observed in the General Archive of the Indies, that displays them to some degree. With that, the aim is to build a model for the Archives, determining how they should be. The interdisciplinary approach, between ontology and archivology, was adopted, integrating the method of philosophical reflection with documentary research procedures, based on pieces of fonds from the General Archive of the Indies, collection of images of the author and sources. The discussion addresses aspects of practices, forms and functions, which indicate the essence of the Archives and their path towards their paradigmatic ideality. The General Archive of the Indies is presented as a particular example that exemplifies these essential properties. Our conclusion is that there are certain essential universal properties of Archives, or archival institutions, which are: accessibility, durability and practicality. In addition, the proposed model is applicable for the institutionalization of Archives and also for the construction, reforms, implantations, the creation of new spaces, adaptations, restructuring in buildings and institutional uses of the Archive.

Digital curation in virtual libraries: the case of Community Virtual Librarian's Virtual Worlds Database project

This work aimed to map the digital curation actions, which include the active management and preservation of information, in the virtual library Community Virtual Librarian (CVL) of the Second Life environment (SL), the project called Internacional Virtual Worlds Database, which aims to categorize, describe, preserve and make communities in the virtual world more publicly accessible. This is an exploratory and bibliographic research. Data collection was carried out by direct immersive observation in the SL environment by the authors, as well as by applying a questionnaire to the virtual library manager who also manages the referred project. From the information collected, based on the Digital Curation Center (DCC) life cycle model, the actions already carried out in the library that can contribute to the digital curation of existing objects in this environment were mapped. As a result, it was possible to observe that the implementation of the stages of digital curation are already related to the activities of the observed virtual spaces. However, these activities are incomplete and need to be better planned, formalized / documented, in order to guarantee the preservation of the existing information in the virtual world in an integral, reliable and lasting way. It is hoped to be able to collaborate with the reflection on the need for management and preservation of information in virtual libraries.

Healthy organizations: people and information in synergy and development

In this contribution we will develop the concept of organizational climate and we will see the implications for human development. The strategic planning that organizations should carry out requires lines of action oriented towards the internal functioning of the organization from the perspective of its employees. With this objective, we will develop the topic and link it with the information units as work environments, so that they bet on knowledge management and on various forms of synergy between people. In development, we will argue about the importance of organizations working consciously in building a good working climate. We will focus on the development of key concepts such as strategic planning, leadership, knowledge management and information culture. In closing, I make recommendations for the development of strategic lines of action that allow generating a shared vision of the organization, in order to build an informational culture that links collaborative learning and knowledge management.
