Knowledge about antineoplastic drugs: implications for the health of nursing workers in a general hospital

ABSTRACT Objectives: to understand, from a worker’s health perspective, the knowledge of nursing professionals about the use of antineoplastic drugs in a general hospital. Methods: a descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach. It was conducted at a university hospital, between April and August 2018, with 35 nursing professionals who responded to a semi-structured interview. Thematic analysis was used for data treatment. Results: from the data, three thematic categories emerged, related to the nursing professionals’ knowledge about antineoplastic drugs and their effects on workers’ health; situations in which exposure to these drugs occurs; and protection mechanisms for the patient, the environment, and the worker. Final Considerations: the nursing professionals had little knowledge about antineoplastic drugs. The practices related to handling and the necessary protective measures to deal with these drugs were empirically determined and relatively subsidized the knowledge acquired by the professionals.

The nurse’s professional identity on the Primary Health Care users perception

ABSTRACT Objectives: to understanding the perception of Primary Health Care users about the professional identity of nurse. Methods: this is an exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study, using the STROBE instrument. The sample included 94 users grouped according to the Family Health Strategy coverage. Results: the idealized identity of nurses dates back to the past of the profession. The subjects, in 81.9%, associate the female gender to the profession. 63.8% of them believed that the nurse is a subordinate, and from these, 90% believed they were subordinate to physicians. The analysis of the perception of the activities under responsibility of the nurse showed the predominance of assistance activities that are not exclusive to them. Conclusions: the findings indicate partial awareness about the identity and the role of nurses in Primary Health Care. The main deficits are related to the competences of this professional. The understanding of the role of the nurse was higher in the population under the coverage of the Family Health Strategy.

Meanings and significance attributed by people with HIV/aids to their lives with this virus/disease

ABSTRACT Objectives: to understand the meanings and significance attributed by people with HIV/aids to the process of living with this virus/disease. Methods: qualitative and exploratory study, carried out in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Grounded Theory and the Symbolic Interactionism were used. Data were collected in a semistructured interview and through non-participant observation, from August 2017 to May 2018. 29 patients participated. Results: living with HIV/AIDS is a social phenomenon in which it is not possible to disconnect the process of adapting to the disease from the social relations one (re)constructs during life. It also involves stigmatization, rejection, and isolation. Final Considerations: understanding the meanings of this process is a positive influence for proactive behavior and resilience, not only in regard to the care concerning the presence of the virus and the uninterrupted need to adhere to medication, but also in the way to deal with the social values that reproduce previous models, which, in turn, can help improve self-knowledge.

Relationship between physical activity and functional capacity change in aged cohort in São Paulo, Brazil

ABSTRACT Objectives: to evaluate the relationship between leisure-time physical activity and functional capacity change among aged people. Methods: we analyzed data of an aged cohort looking for determinants of functional capacity at follow-up. Baseline data were collected between 2007 and 2008 - average follow-up of 3,5 years. A full multivariate linear regression model was built to evaluate functional capacity at the end of the follow-up, controlling for functional capacity at baseline, sociodemographic, health and behavioral characteristics and amount of leisure-time physical activity in the period. Results: final model showed functional capacity independently correlated with age (p<0.001), body mass (p=0.013) and the number of activities of daily living compromised at baseline (p<0.001). Functional capacity improved with increased physical activity but loss statistical significance after adjustments (p=0.384). Conclusions: functional capacity decreases with increased age, increased loss of functional capacity at baseline and increased body mass. Albeit a non-significant association, leisure-time physical activity appears as an important modifiable factor.
