Customization of digital library of PhD dissertations for citizens
PHD UNS is digital library of PhD dissertations defended at University of Novi Sad. A web page for basic and advanced search has been developed in order to improve discoverability of dissertations stored in the digital library. This paper presents customization of PHD UNS web search pages for citizens out of academy. The customization includes extension of available representation styles and implementation of automatic recommendations of PhD dissertations. Representation styles are extended with textual representation specially designed for non-academic citizens and visual representation based on word clouds. Automatic recommendations are based on collaborative approach built on PhD download history, i.e., performed on the basis of what other ‘similar’ users have found useful. The PHD UNS digital library logs information for each dissertation downloading. Besides basic information about downloaded dissertation, those logs also contain information about client machine which requested downloading. Those logs have been used in order to prove our customization really improve non-academic users’ experience.

Summarizing ETDs with deep learning
Inspired by the millions of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) openly available online, we describe a novel use of ETDs as data for text summarization. We use a large corpus of ETDs to evaluate techniques for generating abstractive summaries with deep learning. Using an extensive ETD collection of over 30,000 doctoral dissertations and master’s theses, we examine the quality of state-of-the-art deep learning summarization technologies when applied to an ETD corpus. Deep learning requires a large set of training data to produce satisfactory results. Finding suitable training data is especially difficult due to the widespread use of domain-specific jargon in ETDs, coupled with the wide-ranging breadth of subject matter contained in an ETD corpus. To overcome this significant limitation, we demonstrate the potential of transfer learning on automatic summarization of ETD chapters. We apply several combinations of deep learning models and training data to the ETD chapter summarization task and compare the outputs of the top performers.

Embracing open science agenda through coordinated approach: The Botswana case
A number of countries around the world have embraced the open science agenda. However, in some cases, existing legislative frameworks in most countries typically do not allow much openness of data and science. Botswana is an example of such countries. The absence of legislative framework poses a challenge to librarians, researchers and policy makers with regard to data sharing. This has derailed the country’s development in terms of innovation and creativity. This issue has prompted different stakeholders to come together to work towards changing the current systems and regulatory frameworks in relation to open science and data management. The Botswana Open Data Open Science (ODOS) national committee was established in 2017 by different stakeholders being public bodies, business communities, information professionals and research communities to develop an open data open science policy that would enable data sharing and openness in science within the country. The purpose of this paper is to share the strategies used to establish inclusive interactions and engagement between stakeholders in facilitating the open data readiness implementation in Botswana. Moreover, the paper will highlight challenges encountered and achievement attained through this collaborative effort.
Branching out to a larger audience: Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) library marketing strategies in promoting Institutional Repository
Faced with the advancement of the fourth industrial revolution whereby users are technology-driven, BIUST library repositioned itself in the financial year 2018/2019 by developing and implementing technology-mediated tools as a means of enhancing service delivery. One of the tools that was developed was an institutional repository (IR) with the intention to store, preserve and disseminate the research output produced by both the university employees and students. Like any other library services, the IR needs to be marketed and promoted for its usage to be maximized. The BIUST library conducts marketing activities to promote and create awareness on both newly acquired services and products and existing ones for full utilization for a better return on investment. This paper, therefore, focuses on the different marketing strategies used by the library to promote the IR, especially the electronic theses and dissertations community for both the internal and external audience and the anticipated impact of these marketing activities.

Digital Initiatives at Dhaka University Library
University of Dhaka is the largest and the oldest public university in Bangladesh. The university has more than forty-two thousand students and over two thousand academic staff. The university library1 is the heart of the academic activities on campus serving a big number of students, teachers and researchers. The university library holds about 0.6 million copies of books and about 30 thousand of rare manuscripts, microfilms, microfiche and other records of historical importance. It is the largest library in the country. The library maintains an institutional repository and online archives of digitized contents for the university community and others. The goal of such initiatives is to increase the visibility, use and impact of the university's research publications by offering them to use through the university's own digital archival system. The repository consists of full-text materials produced in the university such as theses, internship reports, journal articles, conference proceedings and research materials produced by all the departments, Institutes, research centers and units of the university. DSpace is used for this repository services. Since June 2012, the repository has been archiving research articles and most importantly all these research publications are of open access allowing university community to have free access to them. Its unique feature is that academic and researchers can also archive their research and other publications in this repository platform. Since this is an open access platform for the university community who can easily get information and relevant research articles from this platform, it is particularly popular among new and young scholars. Additionally, the university library preserves its own digitized newspapers, manuscripts and rare materials in a recently created archival system. This is the first of its kind initiative which has an outstanding impact on access and use of digitized resources in Bangladesh. This poster provides an overview of Dhaka University Library’s institutional repository and archival services currently available. It will also highlight future plans and programs for better library management and services besides increasing access to archival contents for the university community.

A Multi-Faceted Multi-Stakeholder Approach for Increased Visibility of ETDs in Zambia
The University of Zambia has had a functional Institutional Repository (IR) since 2012. However, while Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) are routinely deposited into the IR, the ingestion is not timely, with significantly large time gaps existing between ETD submission dates and ETD IR ingestion dates. We propose a multi-faceted approach that is aimed at providing a potentially viable solution to the problems through the use of effective workflows and automatic classification of IR objects. Preliminary results demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach is feasible. It is anticipated that the proposed approach will facilitate the implementation of a National ETD portal for storing up-to-date and consistent metadata records from Higher Education Institutions across Zambia.
Using metadata record graphs to understand controlled vocabulary and keyword usage for subject representation in the UNT theses and dissertations collection
An important function of metadata for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) is supporting the discovery of related documents through linking of data values in the fields of metadata records. While benefits of the ETD format allow for full-text searching, metadata is still an important and necessary component of the global ETD infrastructure because it is often not possible to share the full documents in aggregations such as the Global ETD Search for the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. The metadata field that has the most potential to assist users in discovery is the subject field used to represent what a resource is about. Over the years there has been much discussion of the value of author-generated keywords versus adding subject terms from controlled vocabularies by information professionals as documents are submitted to the University repository. This research seeks to explore this problem with the help of network analysis method not used for such analyzes before by building and analyzing metadata record graphs for the University of North Texas theses and dissertations. This paper reports on the characteristics of keyword-based and controlled-vocabulary-based metadata record networks and discussions insights that can be gained from this approach to metadata quality analysis. Mapping of ETDs in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) Global database (2014-2018)
The information explosion in the form of ETDs poses the challenge of management and extraction of appropriate knowledge for decision making by information practitioners. This study presents a solution to the problem by applying topic mining and prediction modeling to 441 full-text ETDs extracted from the PQDT Global database during 2014-2018 in the field of library science using the RapidMiner platform. This study was divided into three phases. In the first phase, metadata analysis of the ETDs retrieved from the database was performed to identify the association of various entities such as universities, departments, types of degrees, and geographical areas with the ETDs. In the second phase, 8 core topics namelychildren literature; academic library; information retrieval; archival science; user study; digital library; library leadership; and digital communication were determined using latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) and each ETD was then annotated with the modeled topic. Lastly, a prediction model using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) was created to classify the untagged ETDs going to be submitted in the database under the 8 modeled topics ( a to h ).
