Social representations and serological profile for syphilis acquired in elderly people from a vulnerable region in Brazil

In the last decades there has been a significant increase in STIs among the population aged over 60 years. The objective was to evaluate the serological profile and social representations of syphilis in the elderly. To evaluate the serological profile of this group, the treponemal immunochromatographic test was performed. The tests were carried out on 133 participants, aged between 60 and 84 years of both sexes, with non-reactive results in 100% of cases. The social representations of syphilis for the elderly is that it is a dangerous disease, but some of the interviewees did not associate it as a disease. In addition, most of them list the use of condoms as a method of disease prevention, but with low adherence to use. Our results indicate that the elderly people are vulnerable to syphilis.

Assistência odontológica para idosos durante a pandemia da COVID-19: Uma perspectiva brasileira

Aim: This study evaluated the need for dental assistance of elderly people during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methodology: This online observational survey included Brazilian elderly aged ≥ 60 years, with internet access from all Brazil's regions. They completed questionnaires regarding sociodemographic characteristics, general health, COVID fear (scale FCV-19S), and dental assistance. Data were tabulated and analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis (α = 5%). Results: Overall, 705 elderly people completed the questionnaire. Most volunteers needed dental assistance (58.6%) although only 31.3% visited a dental office, reporting a dental urgency. Elderly had elective appointments (96.3%) in private dental services (95.9%), mostly accompanied during dental assistance (81.6%), without the need to wait (50.7%). Prosthodontic and restorative interventions were the most required procedures. In the dental office, the fear of being contaminated by COVID-19 existed in 53.9%, while the risk of being contaminated was considered medium (46%). Elderly from Northern, Northeastern, and Central-Western, with low educational level, previous COVID-19 diagnosis, and with highest FCV-19S scores had more fear of contamination in the dental office (all p <0.05). In Northern, Northeastern, and Southeastern Brazil, elderly with worse educational levels, and those with greatest FCV-19S scores (all p <0.05) considered the risk of being contaminated in dental offices. Conclusions: Finally, Brazilian elderly people still need dental assistance during the outbreak. Low-educational levels, previous COVID-19 diagnosis, fear of COVID-19, and highly affected Brazilian regions exhibited increased fear of being contaminated in the dental office, which may prevent them from seeking help.

Association between angiotensin-converting enzyme polymorphisms and the behavior of heart rate variability in healthy individuals: A systematic review

The Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) generates angiotensin 2 as a final product, which promotes increased sympathetic activity, but the effects of the different ACE polymorphisms on heart rate variability (HRV) is unclear. The purpose of the present review is to synthesize findings in ACE associations and behavior of HRV in healthy subjects. Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched without language restriction until January 2021. Original studies that analyzed the association between ACE polymorphisms and HRV in healthy individuals were included and review studies, letters to the editor, editorials and points of view were excluded. As the systematic result identified 548 studies as eligible after application of the methodological descriptors. Following the selection process, the studies were evaluated within the inclusion and exclusion criteria and then, six studies were selected for the present review. Paper’s quality was assessed by Q-Genie and all were considered highest quality. Evidence on the impact of ACE polymorphisms on HRV is not consensual, studies do not clearly demonstrate a pattern of HRV behavior due ACE polymorphisms. Based on limited research number and their conflicting results, it is concluded that there is no possibility to speak causally about the associations between ACE polymorphisms and HRV behavior.

Pharmacological treatment for endometriosis

Endometriosis is a gynecological disease characterized by the presence of endometrium as tissue-epithelium and stroma that develops outside the uterine cavity. It is a chronic, estrogen-dependent disease, is associated with pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and infertility. Given the great impact of this disease on the quality of life of women, there has been a growing interest in the discovery of new drugs that are more effective, tolerability and safety. For this, a literature review was carried out from articles published between 2008 and 2018 available regarding pharmacological treatments for endometriosis in the SCIENCE DIRECT and PUBMED databases. A total of 223 articles published in the last 10 years were found in "Portuguese and English". After evaluating the articles, 15 articles were selected for the present study, which complied with all the eligibility criteria proposed in the methodology. It was concluded that we can count on several types of treatments for endometriosis, but most have the objective of treating the symptoms associated with endometriosis. Currently, the specific treatment we can count on is dienogeste. In addition, there are many studies in search of new drugs and promising treatments for this pathology. Thus, more research is needed regarding the theme and that the pharmacist plays a fundamental role in the adherence to the patient's treatment.

Resilience and its association with religiosity, spirituality and affective disorders in dialysis chronic kidney patients

Objectives: to evaluate the state of resilience and investigate its association with religiosity/spirituality and affective disorders in dialysis. Methods: Single-center, cross-sectional study with patients aged ≥ 18 years, dialysis time ≥ 6 months. The research instruments were the Resilience Scale-14 items; DUREL Scale; Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES); and Anxiety, depression and stress scale (EADS). The state of resilience was assessed and its association tested with the patients'religiosity, spirituality, anxiety-stress-depression state. Results: 58 patients were included, 55.2% male, mean age 51.5 years. Resilience was very low /low/lower limit in 15.5%, moderate in 31%, moderately high/high in 50% of patients. A significant difference in the depression, anxiety, stress and intrinsic religiosity scores was detected according to resilience, with higher scores in patients with lower resilience. Resilience had a moderate negative correlation with the score of RI (r = -0.407; p = 0.002), anxiety (r = -0.360; p = 0.006) and depression (r = -0.316; p = 0.016) and weak negative correlation with DSES (r = -0.281; p = 0.034). There was no association with age, marital status, economic or cultural level, type of religion or laboratory tests on dialysis. Conclusion: Resilience was moderately high/high in 50% of dialysis’patients, and the higher the level of resilience, the more positive affective state, the better the full experience of religiosity and the greater frequency in spiritual experiences with God. Interventions that can assist in the management of difficulties and adaptations to chronic kidney disease should be promoted.

Organic fertilization in potato cultivar Ágata

An important sector of world agriculture, potato cultivation stands out because its production presents difficulties and challenges, among them is the adequate management of fertilization, mainly of nitrogen. With this work, the objective was to test sources and doses of nitrogen in the emergence of potatoes cv Ágata, The work was carried out in the field at the experimental unit of the Federal University of Fronteira Sul, Laranjeiras do Sul campus, in the Horticulture sector. Three sources of fertilization were used, tanned poultry litter, pelleted poultry litter and humus with five different doses, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200 kg\ha-¹, and two NPK 160 and 200 kg\ha-¹, testemun controls. . Seed potatoes were supplied by UNICENTRO, planting took place in October. The variables evaluated 14 days after sowing were the number of emerged tubers and the incidence of rot in the tubers. The presence of 100% of the tubers of Pectobacterium sp. The highest percentage of emergence was obtained with the control, NPK 200 kg\ha-¹, followed by pelletized poultry litter 120 kg\ha-¹. The use of tanned poultry litter 140 kg\ha-¹ provided a smaller number of emerged potatoes. It is concluded that the NPK 200 kg\N\ ha-¹ showed higher values than the other treatments, however it is not usually used by potato growers. The pelleted poultry litter at a dose of 120 kg\ha-¹ has the best cost-benefit ratio and emergence percentage among organic fertilizers.

Environmental protection profile from Paraná’s west: From Guaíra Falls to Ilha Grande National Park

The Ilha Grande National Park (PARNA – Parque Nacional da Ilha Grande) was created in 1997, by the Federal Decree of September 30, 1997, adopting an environmental preservation format, the type of integral protection, in which a conservation unit excludes from its territorial limits the human presence and directs its use solely and exclusively for the purposes of scientific research, development of educational activities and environmental interpretation, recreation in contact with nature and ecological tourism. The present study aims to analyze throughout history the different formats of environmental protection conferred to the region of the extreme West of Paraná, drawing a parallel with the norms published in the Brazilian legal system and the profiles of the preservationist, conservationist and ethnoconservationist thoughts. To this end, this study used the method of bibliographic review and searching of documents and national legislation to outline the various conservation models implemented in the region. However, it appears that the environmental protection attributed to the region before the creation of PARNA in Ilha Grande assumed at certain times an extremely conservationist bias and sometimes the government implemented public policies in which natural resources were viewed only under the focus of predatory development. After the establishment of the current conservation unit in October 1997, environmental actions were guided by preservationist thinking and did not generate effective environmental protection.

Culture of patient safety in an accredited high complexity hospital

The purpose of the article is to present the results of the research on patient safety from the perceptions of the employees of high complex hospital, located in the southern region of Brazil. It is applied, transversal, exploratory and descriptive research, with survey design and quantitative approach. Data collection was performed using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC), developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research And Quality and validated in Brazil by Reis (2013). 646 (67%) of the 960 hospital employees participated in the survey. The main results of the study were identified as strong dimensions for patient safety 'organizational learning', 'hospital management support for patient safety', 'frequency of reported events' and' expectations about your supervisor / boss' and 'actions promoting patient safety. Otherwise, the dimensions ‘shift change / shift’ and ‘non-punitive responses to errors’ were characterized as fragile for the safety culture in the hospital. Therefore, reinforcing the promoter aspects and intervening in the weakening aspects represent urgent and necessary actions to be taken in the hospital in question, as well as in the entire hospital system.

Factors that influence the longevity of direct restorations: An integrative review

Composite resin is one of the most used dental materials by professionals, aiming at the search for aesthetic and functional restoration of the teeth. In this context, this study aimed to verify the factors that influence the longevity of direct restorations. An integrative literature review was performed, in which the bibliographic survey was performed through consultation in databases of relevance to the production of health knowledge: PubMed / Medline and SCIELO, in Portuguese and English, in full, between January 2009 and January 2019, totaling 20 articles. According to the researched articles, fractures are reported in almost 100% of the studies as a reason for failure of composite resin restorations, followed by secondary caries and lack of hygiene by the patient. Regarding the main factors for resin longevity, studies show that the choice of material, the size of the cavity, the use of barrier material to prevent oral pathogens (absolute isolation), the need for proper polishing and finishing. and above all, the implementation of a regular prophylaxis program. Therefore, it should be borne in mind that efforts for diagnosis, planning, treatment indication, correct procedure execution, observation of occlusal aspects, biofilm control and follow-up are essential to obtain results aimed at direct restoration longevity.

Prevalence of orofacial injuries and the level of knowledge about oral protection in a brazilian judo team

Contact athletes are often subject to orofacial trauma, especially in combat sports such as judo. However, the use of mouthguards can minimize the occurrence of trauma and prevent orofacial injuries resulting from sports. The objective of this work was to determine the prevalence of orofacial injuries in the athletes of the basic teams of the Brazilian judo team, as well as to evaluate their level of knowledge about the use of mouth protectors. A structured questionnaire was applied, with 10 specific questions for 46 athletes from the basic judo teams, male and female in Brazil, referring to the research theme. The results suggest that most athletes have already suffered some type of orofacial trauma during the practice of judo and most athletes do not use mouthguards, due to several factors. It is concluded that orofacial traumas showed a high prevalence, with lacerations of the lip, tongue and cheek mucosa being the most reported by judo athletes of the Brazilian team and their level of knowledge about the use of mouthguards was low, pointing to the need for informational actions on this subject among athletes of the Brazilian judo team.
