Medicinal species from Brazil with anti-inflammatory or antioxidant potential: A review

Medicinal plants have been used by the population since time immemorial, representing a remarkable source for the treatment of various human diseases, that may have their risk reduced by eating products based on these plants, benefits are attributed to some secondary metabolites that have an anti-inflammatory and/or antioxidant activity. The aim of this study is to perform a literature searching for the most commonly used species of medicinal plants in Brazil with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential of the last decade. Were used publications indexed in the databases: PubMed, Science Direct and Scielo in the last 10 years, using the following descriptors: “Brazilian medicinal plants”, “anti-inflammatory activity” and “antioxidant activity” Using the Boolean marker “AND” ensuring specificity in searches. 1,185 articles were identified, 1.140 were eliminated because they did not meet the inclusion or exclusion criteria. A total of 45 articles published were included, which were categorized according to the use for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Among the active compounds with anti-inflammatory activities there are some polyphenolic compounds, in addition to alkaloid, terpenoid and steroid. These secondary metabolites act on different targets involved in the inflammatory process. Studies have shown that polyphenolic compounds, especially flavonoids, have bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties that can be used for therapeutic purposes in diseases such as chronic degenerative diseases. These results suggest the prospects for future studies to obtain a better understanding of the individual components and the use of these compounds as a possible therapeutic agent for pathologies such as inflammation and free radicals.

Perspective of pharmaceutical practice in adrenal insufficiency: An integrative review

An integrating review of the literature about the perspectives of the pharmaceutical practices in Adrenal Insufficiency (AI) was carried out. Researches were done on the LILACS database, Medline (Pubmed), and Scientific Electronic Library OnLine-SCIELO.  Articles published between January 2007 and February 2021, written in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, were included. A total of 43 articles were selected to compose the review. A great deal of the studies considers patient education fundamental for the treatment and AI control. Among the education measures found in these studies, which can subside the service routines are: guidelines on the precipitating factors, signs and disease symptoms, dose adjustment, drug interaction, and condition identification cards. Relevant interventions of clinic management reported hospital discharge plans, management of AI acute and chronic phases, home care management, and routine outpatient follow-up. For an effective self-care support system, patient-centered assistance must be the core of the health care standards model. The review establishes that the AI patient follow-up must be performed regularly by a multidisciplinary team. It also allowed the identification of health measures that a pharmacist integrated with the healthcare team should perform.

In vitro evaluation of the acaricidal activity of propolis against cattle ticks

Propolis is a natural substance that is produced by bees and has been used since ancient times for its pharmacological properties. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplusis responsible for great economic losses by cattle breeding programs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of propolis extracts on engorged female ticks. The experiment was performed at the Uberaba IFTM. A completely randomized experimental design was used, including eight treatments and five replicates, with a total 40 experimental units, each consisting of 10 engorged females of homogeneous weight. The experimental units were immersed in alcoholic propolis extracts that were diluted with distilled water to the following concentrations: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70%. A regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between propolis extract concentration and weight of eggs laid (WEL), hatching percentage (HP), and reproductive efficiency (RE). This demonstrates the viability of propolis as an alternative for the control of cattle ticks, with the 70% extract concentration being most efficientand most effective for controlling R. microplus under laboratory conditions.

Urban solid waste and the 2030 Agenda: An analysis of actions taken by the municipality of São José do Seridó/RN

The actions carried out by the municipal entity of São José do Seridó/RN, regarding the management of solid waste in the municipality and its correlation with the objectives outlined in the 2030 Agenda, prepared and ratified by the signatory countries of the United Nations (UN), comprise the axis of analysis in this paper. For a better understanding of this relation, it was adopted as a general objective to understand the contribution of urban solid waste management actions carried out by the municipality of São José do Seridó/RN, in compliance with the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda. Once this was done, the theme was developed through the following specific objectives: (i) identifying the actions taken by the municipality to mitigate urban solid waste, (ii) understanding the relevance of the actions taken to mitigate the impact caused by environment and (iii) relating the actions developed to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda. In order to achieve the objectives outlined, an exploratory and descriptive methodology was adopted, with a bibliographic deepening and empirical data collection, through a structured participant research. The analysis of the data from the research follows the qualitative approach. The present study is justified by the fact that urban waste is still a problem with few practical solutions. For this reason, most Brazilian municipalities are unable to fully meet the requirements of the National Solid Waste Policy. Finally, it appears that the municipal entity carries out activities that align commitment and sustainable responsibility, in order to generate less environmental impact, managing to partially meet some SDG.

Antimicrobial activity of garlic (Allium sativum ,Liliaceae) in nature and aqueous extract against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes

Introduction: Garlic (Allium sativum) belongs to the Liliaceae family, its popular knowledge is mainly due to its use in cooking, but there are several alternatives for medicinal use, being researched as a natural and effective alternative against various pathogenic microorganisms. Its efficiency has been evidenced as antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic. Objective: To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of garlic (Allium sativum), in natura and the aqueous extract, against the fungus Candida albicans, and the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Streptococcus pyogene 1033B. Method: This is an experimental research with quantitative approach on the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of garlic extract (Allium sativum, Liliaceae), in natura, and aqueous garlic extract. The agar diffusion method was used - Disc and Well technique in Mueller Hinton Agar medium containing the tested microorganisms, the wells and the filter paper discs containing the extracts. The raw extract was obtained by maceration and the aqueous extract was obtained by soaking the garlic in 0.9% Sodium Chloride for 24 hours for seven days. Results: The numerical results obtained by measuring the halos after the Disc and Well Test showed that the aqueous extract did not inhibit the growth of microorganisms, while the in natura extract through the disc test, obtained significant result against S. aureus, S. pyogenes and C. albicans, possessing halo of inhibition of 23.3 ± 0.6, 20 ± 2 and 18 ± 0 respectively. In the well technique, the halos for S. aureus, S. pyogenes and Candida albicans, were 41.3 ± 0.6, 32 ± 2 and 24 ± 0.6 respectively. Conclusion: It is concluded that the study corroborates in the proof of the antimicrobial action of garlic and shows that the halo of inhibition of the extract in natura both in S. aureus as in S. pyogenes was superior to the halo of the antibiotics tested, the halo presented in Candida albicans was also considerable and bigger than the one presented by the antifungal, showing this way how the microorganisms are sensitive to the extract in natura of garlic in comparison to the antibiotics commonly used.

Productive performance of Brachiaria (syn. Urochloa) brizantha cultivars under organic fertilization

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses of chicken litter on the SPAD chlorophyll index (Development of Plant and Soil Analysis) and on the dry matter yield (DM) of forage cultivars (cvs.) Of Brachiaria brizantha Marandu, BRS Paiaguás and Xaraés. The experiment was carried out in plastic pots filled with 25 L, in the open air. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with three replications, in a 4x3x6 factorial scheme. Therefore, four doses of organic fertilization (without fertilization - natural soil, 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1; and 15 t ha-1 of chicken litter); three cvs. by Urochloa brizantha: (Marandu, BRS Paiaguás and Xaraés); and six evaluation periods (86, 114, 142, 198, 254 and 282 days after the emergence of cultivars). The SPAD indices and DM productivity were evaluated in six consecutive seasons, whose DM was estimated by cutting the forage at a height of 0,20 m from the ground. The increase in the dose of chicken litter increased the productivity of DM, and the SPAD indices of the cultivars. The chicken litter can be used as an alternative source of fertilization for pastures of tropical climate in regions of the cerrado, due to the expressive increases in the production of forage mass, with the maximum productivity of DM obtained with the dose of 9,8 t ha-1 of chicken bed for cv. Marandu, and 15 t ha-1 of chicken litter for the cvs. BRS Paiaguás and Xaraés.

Cinnamomum camphora var. linaloolifera essential oil on pest control: Its effect on Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

This study evaluated the insecticidal effect of Cinnamomum camphora var. linaloolifera essential oil and its major compound, linalool, on Trialeurodes vaporariorum. Essential oil treatments were applied at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% v/v on eggs, nymphs, and adult individuals and linalool equivalent concentrations on nymphs of T. vaporariorum. The negative controls water and Tween-80® (0.5% v/v) and a positive control (spiromesifen 0.05% v/v for eggs and nymphs; pymetrozine 0.04% m/v for adults) were also used. The essential oil of C. camphora at 2.0% v/v caused egg mortality of 49.7%; same concentration caused the highest nymph mortality (88.5%). For adults, the essential oil at 2.0% v/v caused the highest mortality (40.0%) after 48 h, not changing from 48 to 72 h. The essential oil and linalool performed similarly relative to the nymphs, whose mortalities have not differed statistically, with exception of the concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0% v/v. Regarding the chemical control, the concentration of 2.0% v/v has had similar mortality for nymphs; for eggs and adults, the essential oil caused lower mortality (49.4 and 40.0%) than the synthetic pesticide (65.0 and 72.0%). The essential oil of C. camphora may be a potential control alternative for T. vaporariorum, especially regarding the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.

Evaluation of the oleochemical quality of sesame seeds (sesamum indicum) and sunflower (helianthus annus)

APOA5 gene polymorphism assessment and association with hypertriglyceridemia in the military force of the State of Goiás

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dyslipidemias are determinant for the onset of cardiovascular diseases and represent more than 30% of global deaths. Changes in serum lipid levels are a direct consequence of dyslipidemia.   This study aimed to verify the relationship between genetic polymorphism APOA5  and dyslipidemia. This is a case-control study with 199 officers of the military force of the state of Goiás in which the relationship between lipid profile and genetic polymorphism rs964184 was evaluated. Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (real-time PCR) was used to identify genetic polymorphism rs964184. Of the participants analyzed, 93% were male and 7% female, the lipid profile showed that 115 participants had dyslipidemia (group of cases) and 84 were within the reference range (control group). The genetic polymorphism rs964184 of the case group showed that 64.3% (74/115) of the participants had genotype CC, 33.0% (38/115) had cg genotype and 2.6% (3/115) had GG genotype. In the control group, 69.0% (58/84) had genotype CC, 27.4% (23/84) had cg genotype, 3.6% (3/84) had GG genotype. In conclusion, the G alllea is related to high levels of triglycerides (≥ 150 mg/dL) and the C allea is related to normal HDL cholesterol levels (≥ 40 mg/dL). Therefore, homozygous (GG) or heterozygous (CG) individuals are more inclined to have high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol levels, which are associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Fragmentation of vegetation in protected area in the cerrado region

The vegetation of the Cerrado biome has suffered severe degradation by the expansion of farming and lack of protected areas. Thus, studies that assist in the decision making management of protected areas become increasingly important. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the fragmentation of vegetation in the Parque Natural Municipal Salto do Sucuriú region. The study area is part of the Biodiversity Corridor Emas-Taquari, demonstrating the importance of analyzing this region using geotechnologies. Furthermore, it was analyzed the fragmentation of vegetation being produced Land Cover Letter (with the quantification of the area occupied by each of the 10 classes of soil cover), Letter of Evaluation Index of the Fragments by Edge (which allowed an assessment of the shape of the remaining vegetation patches on a vulnerability scale - 5 classes) and the Letter of Evaluation of fragments by size (showing that the small patches of native vegetation are numerous, but that there are still two large fragments in the landscape). All these data describe the structure of the landscape of the region and the relationship of the number, shape and size with the remaining biodiversity, energy and matter present in the region. Thus, through the use of geotechnology results were produced in a region that has a conservation unit. Repeating the method presented in this study, at regular time intervals, allows monitoring of the environmental situation in the region this important conservation unit, serving as a management tool for environmental agencies.

Adulteration analysis of Curcuma longa L. powder sold in Campina Grande – PB and Pocinhos-PB

Cúrcuma longa belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, popularly known as turmeric, turmeric, yellow ginger and sun root. Consumed mainly in the form of dry powder, used for several purposes, mainly in traditional and modern medicine. As a consequence of its high commercial value, turmeric has often been adulterated with the most diverse materials and strategies. In this sense, the objective of this work was to analyze possible adulterations in samples of turmeric powder sold in the cities of Campina Grande and Pocinhos in Paraíba. For this, the starch activation and lugol reaction tests were carried out on 10 samples acquired at different commercial points in the cities mentioned. In the starch activation test, only one sample resulted in a full-bodied solution indicating the presence of starch. In the lugol reaction test, 4 samples showed a dark blue / violet color that indicates the presence of starch. It was observed that adulteration was found in a higher percentage in samples sold in open markets. In view of the results, it is observed that the detection of adulterants thus becomes an issue of high importance to ensure consumer protection against fraudulent practices. Thus, it is concluded that the results of this work revealed fraud in some samples and highlights the importance of adopting control and inspection measures to prevent economic losses and risks to consumer health.

Women in Capitalism: Notes for a feminist education

This article presents feminism as a practice of liberating education. It rescues the History of women, problematizing the death of thousands of “witches”, in Europe and in the world, in the beginning of modernity and analyzes the role assigned to women by the capitalist system. The study presents the history of the submission of women to the capitalist system and raises the following problem: What contributions does the study of the rise of the capitalist system represent to a feminist education? As a general objective, the idea of presenting the history of the submission of women to the capitalist system was outlined in order to understand what contributions the study of capitalist ascension presents to a feminist education. The following specific objectives were listed: i. Analyze, based on the work “O Calibã e a Bruxa”, the history of the rise of capitalism and the situation of women; ii. engender, from a diverse bibliography, a perspective on the current situation of women in contemporary capitalism; iii. to present the contents related to a feminist education and; iv. reflect on the potential of feminist education at all levels of education. The bibliographic rescue was the methodological trajectory of this research and the way to organize the study was the Immanent Reading (LESSA, 2014). It is pointed out that despite the recognition of the need for a radical transformation of the economic system, it is not necessary that we have a transformation in the mode of production in order for us to begin to untie the knots of the bonds to which we are subjected and feminist education is one of the ways of doing it.
