Em 1497, os judeus portugueses foram forçados a se converter à religião católica. Após a conversão, eles foram chamados de Cristãos Novos. Alguns deles mantiveram suas práticas religiosas em segredo (esses também foram chamados de “Marranos”), outros misturaram suas crenças com o cristianismo e outros foram completamente integrados à nova religião. Em todos os casos, eles sofreram discriminação legal e social durante séculos. Apesar dos desafios e obstáculos a serem superados, muito já foi investigado sobre a História dos Cristãos-Novos Portugueses nos estados do Nordeste e Sudeste do Brasil. Mas ainda falta conhecimento nos estados do Centro-Oeste e em outros países latino-americanos. O presente artigo tem como objetivo investigar os fragmentos de evidências de “Marranos”, Judeus Portugueses e / ou Cristãos-Novos em dois livros históricos, La Retraite de Laguna (em francês) e Viña del Mar (em espanhol). Dois livros históricos. O primeiro foi escrito no século 19 sobre um episódio da Guerra entre Brasil e Paraguai. O segundo foi escrito, no século XX, sobre a História da cidade chilena de Viña del Mar. São apresentados trechos originais, traduzidos para o inglês, e é discutida a possibilidade de serem evidências da presença de Cristãos-Novos Portugueses. Nesse sentido, o presente artigo contribui ao propor uma nova fonte de pesquisa e ampliar as perspectivas geográficas e históricas de investigação. No entanto, a principal limitação é que traz apenas fragmentos de evidências e não respostas definitivas. Dessa forma, o artigo contribui sugerindo novos caminhos para futuras investigações.

In addition to proposing to account for a life story or part of it, the formative novel needs to accommodate to a series of other classifications that are sometimes coupled to one or more particular categories. Such is the novel Mentch, a arte de criar um homem (Mentch, the art of creating a man), by Paulo Blank, which proposes to include in little Paulo’s formation all the virtues of being a Jewish boy in Rio de Janeiro in last century’s 50s, as well as the typical experiences of the city at that time. The book can be approached under other categories, as a novel of maturity dressed in Bildungroman clothing or as a typical work of Jewish culture. The appreciation of the novel lends itself to unraveling aspects of the instigating Jewish universe of Rio de Janeiro at that time.

On December 6, 1876, His Majesty D. Pedro II embarked on the ship Áquila Imperial, ending an unforgettable 24-day voyage through the Holy Land, a true pilgrimage through the most sacred places in Christendom. Nostalgia, the result of distance; it hit hard, and the 200 members of the Brazilian delegation were already thinking about returning to their respective homes. This article investigates the reports of the trip and its impact on the Brazilian emperor.

This article points out some points in common in the trajectory of the Jewish martyr of the Talmud era, Rabi Akiva, and the Brazilian martyr of the Brazilian colony era, Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, the Tiradentes. Both characters lived in times of great oppression by some dominant power, had difficult childhoods, and possessed Jewish ancestry. Humanists, they sought justice and the defense of the less fortunate. In this process, Rabbi Akiva kept Judaism alive and Tiradentes' sacrifice, according to official history, preceded Brazil's independence.

This study approaches the reality of Sephardic Jews in the Brazilian Amazon from the perspective of the preservation of customs emanating from religion in a new environment and motivated by the diasporic movement. Included in the analyses is the concept of cultural translation and the notion of in-between place. The study presents a brief historical retrospective of populational displacements which provoked resignifications resulting from the immigration process and intercultural contacts. As theoretical contributions, we have adopted the studies produced by Bhabha (1990, 2007); Derrida (2002); Buden and Nowotny (2009) on translation; and deconstruction and Benchimol’s (1998) and Heller’s (2010) works on Sephardic Jews in the Amazon, among others. The reflections ensued lead us to the perception of a dualism that opposes essentialism vs. hybridism – evident, respectively, in religious practices and Jewish customs that are justified by the motivational factors: survival and resistance.
