In Brazil, many areas of research have been studying the topic of drugs, although State policies have historically looked almost exclusively for medicine’s perspectives to support their legislation and government actions regarding psychoactive substances. With the intention to present other perspectives to analyze the topic, this paper proposes a short historiographical contextualization of drugs. The paper problematizes the concept of “drug” itself – which can have many different meanings, often carrying a pejorative feature in its daily use – and exposes the necessity of humanities’ look at the discussion, considering that medical and scientific perspectives have historically dominated the debates, both in the academy and the public sphere.

The article aims to discuss the limits and possibilities of the emerging studies of business history. For this we draw a brief history about the development of this discipline, signaling aspects that encompassed its state of the art. Founded in the context of the expansion and solidification of Economic History during the 1930s, business history has been a constant object of improvement of its paradigmatic foundations established mainly in the universities of the United States and France. This article shows that, despite the significant advances, business history still needs to go beyond the formal boundaries of companies, moving forward on the historical performance of entrepreneurs and their firms in social and political spaces.

The article deals with the discussion about the definition of “prehistoric” time in the debates that legitimated this concept in the history of Archaeology. Also, it demonstrates how naturalist and zoologist Emílio Goeldi (1859-1917), director of the Natural History and Ethnography Museum of Pará State (Brazil), during the last decade of the 19th century, got involved with such a conceptual definition through expeditions to Brazilian Guiana, today known as Amapá State, in Northern Brazil. I intend to emphasize and discuss the development of Archaeology as a scientific field, by defending that at that moment ideas about materially perceived pasts and notions about Indigenous cultures that inhabited the Amazon were activated based on the scientific discourse of the 19th century.

The present article aims to discuss the concepct of “heterology”, crucial to the understanding of the work of the french historian Michel de Certeau, to whom historiography is a discourse about the “other”. The writing of history, by articulating a social place to the creation of a narrative discourse through specific practices and techniques, becomes a way of dealing with the alterity of an “other” which is lost, of an absent one that, according to Certeau, is the object of history. Therefore, we seek to investigate how Certeau understands the articulations between the social place and the historical discourse, once they are essential not only to comprehend what historians do when they “make history”, but also the epistemological status of historiography itself.

“Um abraço do samba ao semba”: diálogos musicais e políticos entre Angola e Brasil na década de 1980

It also aims to analyze in a synthetic way the discourses on the African matrices of Brazilian music expressed by black and non-black musicians and intellectuals between the 1970s and 1980s. These discourses influenced the realization of the Kalunga Project: when an entourage of dozens of Brazilian musicians toured Angola during the civil war in the year 1980. Another intention is to examine the influence of the Brazilian samba on the Angolan semba and what senses can be extracted from these cultural exchanges about the political agency of the Angolan musicians.

“Só é bella de facto a mulher que tem saude”: beleza feminina nas páginas do Almanaque d’A Saúde da Mulher nas décadas de 1930 e 1940

This article aims to analyze female beauty in the 1930s and 1940s from the tonic advertisements "The health of women" published in the Women's Health Almanac. The purpose of this annual periodical was to advertise the medicines of the Daudt & Oliveira laboratory. To conduct this study, we approach the reflections of Georges Vigarello (2006) and Denise Sant'Anna (2000) to reflect on the historicity of the concept of beauty and the cultural changes that modify it both in the West and in Brazil, especially since the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. We will analyze the advertisements using the contributions of Maria do Rosário Gregolin (2011), thinking image and statement as a whole that composes a sense. We sought to show how the health of the female reproductive organs is presented in the periodical as the main source of not only health, but beauty and well-being.

Based on a brief debate on some divergent historical and literary considerations, this article explores the specificities of the fictional narratives in prose around the second century - modernly called novels - regarding the role of the reader in the re-elaboration of cultural tradition. To do so we compare some different poetic and historiographic meanings of the classical and Hellenistic periods. We conclude that the invention of a new discursive genre is distinctive of a new awareness of historical time.
