This article presents archaeological data for the debate - revisited in the Revista de Antropologia by Franciso Noelli, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro and Greg Urban - on a putative origin of the Tupí languages in the Central Amazon. We present here the preliminary results of the archaeological research we have been undertaking in the area of confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers which seem not to support the archaeological premises of this model, first presented by Donald Lathrap in 1970.

O dilema do papa-chibé: consumo alimentar, nutrição e práticas de intervenção na Ilha de Ituqui, baixo Amazonas, Pará

This paper is a study of everyday practices of food choice and use among the inhabitants of Ituqui Island, Santarém municipality, Pará. In addition, I intend to assess the impact of such practices on the local intervention programs. Anthropological studies on food habits and use have been, especially, concentrated on monolevel analysis of mental and cultural structures, systems of representation and economic and environmental infrastructures. For this study, I propose the shift of this focus to the interaction among everyday practices, the habitus and the levels mentioned above. In the Amazon, the need for more research on food habits and uses among peasant societies is added to the modest number of studies in general on these societies, specially, the caboclo ones. The study done on Ituqui Island shows high values of protein intake and low, but moderate, values of caloric intake in relation with the international standards. The processes of food choice appear to be mainly influenced by systems of local food taboos, natural resources and market intense seasonal fluctuation, class representations, and social and individual preferences. Despite the heterogeneity of the processes mentioned above, local intervention programs on nutrition and food insist in simplifying the packages introduced, thus ignoring important social and cultural variables.

Hispanismo e indigenismo: o dualismo cultural no pensamento social peruano (1900-1930). Uma revisão necessária

This article is about the two peruvian interpretations that, in the earlier XXth century, discussed about the cultural components of that country and their rol in the conformation of the peruvian further nation. This presentation attemps to outline the dualism that hispanismo and indigenismo had in common and how this dualistic perspective remains important until now. I will suggest that opposition and conflict are not the only forms of cultural communication - as dualistic perspective think - and that is necessary to think iguality as well and at the same time that difference.

A construção do fim do mundo. Para uma releitura dos movimentos sócio-religiosos do Brasil "rústico"

This article reviews the previous studies on and proposes a new reading of brazilian rural messianic movements. The traditional sociological approach, oriented towards the research of explanations of structural nature, is opposed to the attempt of understanding the logic of symbolism, which is typical of the anthropological investigation. Finally, the perspectives stemming from historical anthropology and history of religions lead to a different view, based on the dialectical relationship between myth and history.

O modelo e a marca, ou o estilo dos "misturados". Cosmologia, História e Estética entre os povos indígenas do Uaçá;;

Four different Indian groups live on the Uaça River Basin and Oiapoque River, in the Northern part of Brazil, State of Amapá, at the boarderline with French Guiana. These Indians of heterogeneous ethnic and cultural origins define themselves as "Mixed People". On the other hand they also share many things and thus reffer to this common heritage as "our system". These Indians are very open to the outside world and at the same time have a strong sense of "inwardness". This article written in 1997 analyses the different contexts in which two recurrent geometric designs occur, applied to simple dayly objects or ritual artifacts and which express intelectually and emotionally these opposite and complementary principles. Retrospectively, I try to evaluate our debt towards Lévi-Strauss and his works in terms of what art means to indigenous people and of how we can better interpret the relations between art and society.

Lévi-Strauss: razão e sensibilidade

A comparison can possibly be made between Lévi-Strauss' conceptions of photography and his anguish regarding travel narratives. I intend to show that this association can only be understood in light of Lévi-Strauss' reflections concerning works of art and the role which he reserves for ethnography. On the other hand, one must have in mind his own considerations regarding the artist in order to evaluate Lévi-Strauss the photographer and the highly sensitive images which he registered during his travels in Brazil.
