A Internet promoveu uma nova forma de comunicação global, com um impacto profundo na disseminação da informação. Em consequência, tornamse necessárias novas soluções tecnológicas que permitam explorar os recursos actualmente disponíveis. Numa era em que os motores de busca de documentos já fazem parte da vida quotidiana do cibernauta, o próximo passo é permitir que os utilizadores da rede obtenham breves respostas a perguntas específicas. O projecto QueXting foi encetado pelo Grupo de Fala e Linguagem Natural (NLX) do Departamento de Informática da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa com o objectivo principal de contribuir para um melhor acesso à informação, possibilitando a realização de perguntas em Português e a obtenção de respostas a partir da informação disponível nos documentos escritos em língua portuguesa. Para tal, pretende oferecer livre acesso a um serviço online que processa os documentos da Internet escritos nesta língua e que começará por proporcionar respostas a perguntas factuais. O sistema de respostaaperguntas QueXting tem como pilares a arquitectura e metodologia recentemente amadurecidas neste domínio científico e diversas ferramentas linguísticas, específicas para a língua portuguesa, que o NLX tem vindo a desenvolver. O processamento linguístico específico é um dos factores chave que distingue a tarefa de respostaaperguntas das restantes tarefas de recuperação e extracção de informação, permitindo um processamento profundo dos pedidos de informação e a obtenção de respostas exactas. Esta dissertação apresenta os resultados do desenvolvimento da infraestrutura do sistema QueXting, que servirá de base ao processamento específico de diversos tipos de perguntas factuais. Apresenta ainda os resultados obtidos no processamento de um tipo de pergunta específico, para o qual foram realizadas avaliações preliminares.

Design towards sustainability is ruled by a sense of social and environmental responsibility, which translates into an effort towards the improvement of the standard of living of the communities and a contribution towards education for citizenship.Based on several design projects towards sustainability, we have identified common features, which help classify the project clusters of this design tendency: intervention, development, and communication.Amongst the projects studied, we can find a model of performance transversal to the collaboration between partners, involving both participation and co-design. A collaborative project establishes a direct relation between the intervening parties: creators and local community. This work methodology also uses the support provided by social networks, which emphasize the quality of interpersonal relationships, and help spread information and knowledge. This way of acting, contributes to the promotion of the social sphere and to civic and environmental education.

The present doctoral research explores the processes of Design and the sustainability of Design projects for social innovation. This is a field of research and practice of Design oriented towards human progress, which however presents obstacles in the practices of Design as the choice of Design methods; and the formalization and the income statement. Our research questions are: HOW are the Design processes for social innovation developed? WHAT are the Design results and the benefits generated by such practices? HOW to create opportunities for the sustainability of Design practices for social innovation? Was gathered 13 cases of Design for social innovation, completing 18 interviews with leaders and designers of the respective projects. In the content of the interviews the Design processes of each initiative are analysed, focusing on the critical points. In response to the difficulty in achieving the sustainability of Design projects for social innovation, a phenomenon pointed out in the literature and the data coming from empiric research, is being developed a toolkit to support Design projects for social innovation, which presents the main obstacles of the projects and the respective actions to be taken by the Design teams in order to overcome these difficulties.

The doctoral research in progress is based on social approaches of design, and explores the relationship between the demand for social innovation from different sectors of society and the efficient delivery of results by designers. The study is supported on the pillars of the constructivist paradigm and interpretative design chain, since design field is an activity that involves creativity, intuition and subjective aspects of creative thought. The opportunity for the study of social innovation from the design perspective justifies itself since: it’s considered the sixth wave of macro innovations; is a rupture with the technological paradigm; it’s encouraged by governmental organizations; the difficulty in measuring the results; the growing demand for design interventions; the gap between the demand and the design results. In order to contextualize the research some questions must be answered: WHAT is the set of theoretical principles underpinning the practice of design for social innovation? WHO are the researchers and experts in design? HOW the processes are conducted by designers and WHERE they centralize their efforts? To compose the case studies two surveys are designed as tools to identify successful initiatives in Latin America countries. The first sample unit consists of design researchers; and the second one are design team leaders. Preliminary observations indicate that it is hard for designers to adopt appropriate methods, techniques and tools; the methods for evaluating the design impact are inconsistent; the sustainability of the project is in risk; projects are planned but developed by trial and error. It is apparent the lack of experience and training of designers with social practices.

Cancioneiro, Fénix, Postilhão, Almanaque, Parnaso e Antologia são palavras que foram utilizadas nos títulos de antologias da literatura portuguesa em diferentes períodos históricos. Neste trabalho, exploram-se os princípios seguidos por Garcia de Resende, Matias Pereira da Silva, os poetas da Nova Arcádia, Camilo Castelo Branco, Teófilo Braga ou Fidelino de Figueiredo na criação dessas colecções. Simultaneamente, observa-se que, com esses volumes, o significado das palavras "poeta" e "poesia" também evoluiu.

Distante de se estabelecer de modo natural, ou atemporal, a história atlântica pressupõe circunscrições precisas, social e politicamente configuradas. Nesse sentido, este dossiê temático busca contribuir para a percepção do que se define como espaço iberoatlântico, focando em um aspecto específico: a circulação da cultura escrita, declinada dos movimentos realizados por livros, periódicos, panfletos e papéis vários. O objetivo é compreender os múltiplos processos de circulação letrada no decorrer dos tempos. Buscou-se pensar os processos em longa duração, para vislumbrar as mudanças nas configurações do mundo iberoatlântico e suas persistências. Evidencia-se, assim, no dossiê, como cada espaço de criação e apropriação de textos postos em circulação é um produto concreto de inserção contingente em redes de diversa compleição e densidade, por meio das quais se materializa um fluxo de objetos manuscritos, impressos e de ideias, movimento no qual se estabelecem sistemas de ligações entre várias regiões do mundo iberoatlântico.

O regimento de conservação das matas que foi instituído no Brasil em 1799 tinha como objetivo sistematizar os cortes das madeiras de construção. As regras estabelecidas foram efetivamente aplicadas nas capitanias da Bahia, de Pernambuco e da Paraíba. O trabalho que se apresenta é uma argumentação historiográfica que versa sobre as especificidades da aplicação do regimento de 1799 no Brasil, em que se abordam os conflitos locais ocasionados pelas limitações comerciais impostas e se analisa a atuação dos Juízes Conservadores das Matas nessa conjuntura política e econômica. A problemática apresentada resultou de uma pesquisa aos fundos e coleções do Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, nomeadamente do fundo documental Conselho Ultramarino-Brasil, seguida dos habituais métodos historiográficos de leituras, transcrições, análises e contextualização dos documentos.

A theoretical-practical thesis is presented dedicated to the representational relationship between Drawing and the real, through an analysis of Realism to define it as an attitude, transversal to time and space, that is defined by premises from which theoretical-formal constants result. In order to define them, the research begins by considering the various uses of the term "realism" and the forms it assumes as a movement. In that analysis we show how, through Drawing, Realism focuses on the representation of the relationship between the individual and society (which requires consideration of the context and commentary by the author of the work) and also on the way in which representation itself operates - leading to the conclusion that the plurality of forms it assumes corresponds to the breadth of the ontological and epistemological relationship between Drawing and the real. However, when the real comes into question, this relationship comes to be considered beyond the plane of the image. From then on, the simulacrum is real and necessary to the human condition, and the possible truth is that of the shared understanding, which starts and legitimates itself in the subject, and aspires only to inter-subjectivity. From this conjecture, the possibility of a post-modern Realism is considered which, by appropriating the past through Drawing as a route to visual metaphor, comes to consider the real, like signification, as mere objects-of-desire. Disregarding the possibility of a false innocence, it is argued that Realism will be an attitude marked by an eagerness to say that precedes the how to say, leading to the continuous use of Drawing which, due to its social functions, is a continuous lifeline to human and real - allowing itself to deal with themes central to human existence, not through its representation, but by being representative of them. Na presente dissertação de mestrado investigo como as transformações do meio televisivo se relacionam com as mudanças no processo de reconhecimento identitário dos indivíduos, dando ênfase às alterações possibilitadas pelas inovações tecnológicas dos objetos new media durante a chamada Post-Network Era e às novas formações identitárias que emergem no contexto da pós-modernidade. A fim de criar as bases teóricas necessárias para a compreensão da televisão como prática cultural, a estrutura proposta para a pesquisa perpassa diferentes tópicos das teorias da comunicação e dos estudos da cultura, iniciando com a conceitualização da TV como meio de comunicação de massa, o contexto sociocultural para o desenvolvimento tecnológico dos televisores e uma breve historiografia das formas e práticas envolvidas no ato de assistir televisão ao longo dos anos. Em complementação à visão geral sobre o funcionamento da TV, conduzo um breve estudo sobre as audiências, partindo do processo de significação dos conteúdos, das especificidades da linguagem televisiva e da relação entre representação e realidade. A participação da audiência na atribuição de sentido à programação é sublinhada como ponto essencial para a fragmentação do público, aqui apresentado como fator central para as mudanças tecnológicas do final do século XX responsáveis por oferecer a estrutura material para a atualização da prática televisiva. Uma argumentação que procura evidenciar como os novos hábitos da audiência e a presença de novas narrativas nas telas se relacionam com as alterações nas experiências dos sujeitos, fruto da crise identitária do contexto pós-moderno. O trabalho culmina no impacto das transformações da TV, mais especificamente o desenvolvimento e consolidação do SVOD, para a abordagem de temáticas identitárias em séries ficcionais, com a análise das representações do gênero feminino nas produções Big Little Lies, Fleabag, I May Destroy You e Manhãs de Setembro.

The congress A “Arte” do Gesso – Entre a criação e a réplica – Estudo e preservação / The “Art” of Plaster – Between Creation and Reproduction – Study and Preservation served to reinforce the appreciation of an art that is seen as ephemeral but with great versatility, touching a very broad spectrum in the expanded field of the Arts. From its history, through its production to its preservation, plaster was scientifically and culturally embraced on this occasion

The plaster collection of the former Academy of Fine Arts of Lisbon, today the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon currently has three essential aspects: a field of memory and history of the educational establishment itself; a repository of didactic material that students still use today to draw, paint or sculpt; and a field linked to conservation and restoration, in which the collection itself has been studied, recovered and conserved by the students of this faculty over the last decade. If the first aspect is fundamental, the second can be important and the last is essential, as a way of preserving and studying the collection. The plaster collection in its multiple polysemy can be understood as a landscape, in which itineraries, paths, and physical and mental journeys can be created; routes, departing but arriving unknown, which this article proposes to carry out

This article presents a project for the management of the existing collection in the Sculpture Storage Room of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. After identifying the problems related to the dissociation factor in this collection, the use of QR codes is proposed to combat its consequences and to avoid future losses, with examples of sculptures from the plaster collection

This study focuses on the hypothesis that the field of the moving image could establish itself as an operative system for the production of “problematic”, unstable and open images, based on a dialectic of negatives made from plaster objects in the collection of the Faculty of Fine Arts from the University of Lisbon. From guided tours of gypsotheques illuminated by torches, to the introduction of photography and cinema as a dialectical hypothesis of the future to question the past from the common condition established by the negative, we proceed with a progression of references that were at the origin of our experimental film, Duplo Negativo/Double Negative. The possibility of having “apparitions” as moments of synthesis aims to be the result of that central use in chain of double negatives in luminous metamorphosis

O córtex pré-frontal é responsável por diversos processos cognitivos e sua avaliação durante craniotomia associada a electroestimulação com o doente acordado é um desafio. Através de um caso clínico de uma paciente de 25 anos com tumor frontal esquerdo submetida a craniotomia acordada, proponho uma bateria de testes com o objetivo de avaliar as funções do córtex pré-frontal, com especial atenção à região dorsolateral, associada sobretudo às funções executivas. Este caso sugere potenciais testes que podem ser usados para garantir que essas funções cognitivas superiores não são negligenciadas durante a cirurgia, permitindo que os doentes mantenham as suas atividades familiares e socioprofissionais e retomem o seu estado funcional após a cirurgia. A doente foi submetida à bateria de testes tanto pré como durante e após a cirurgia, que se mostrou útil, não só porque a paciente não revelou novos défices, mas também demonstrou algumas melhorias após a cirurgia, garantindo uma melhor qualidade de vida de acordo com o seu elevado grau académico. No entanto, reconhecemos que é necessário criar uma bateria de testes eficiente para avaliar outras funções complexas associadas aos lobos frontais.
