Dimensioning the cooling thermal load of environments as a strategy to improve energy efficiency in educational institutions

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the air conditioning units (AAC) currently used in an educational institution are suitable to promote thermal comfort for classroom users, as well as to resize the thermal load based on the norms of the ABNT 5858:1983 and 16401-1:2008. It was found that no classroom has an appropriate AAC for the calculated thermal load. In 7 rooms, the calculated thermal load was higher by NBR 16401-1:2008. As the average thermal load calculated for the rooms is approximately 32,523 BTU, we suggest the use of 30,000 BTU AACs (energy rating A).

Generative perspectives for the study of language

This paper presents a systematization of the evolution of generative linguistic studies. The paper initially describes the main arguments that support generative cognitivism and which ones distinguish it from the empiricist tradition. Following, some grammar models emerged from the generative theory are presented. Convergences and divergences between theoretical generative studies and the psycholinguistic studies are also referenced. Findings of psycholinguistics based on methods that consider real time speaker linguistic coding and interference of prosodic patterns suggest that the theoretical generative studies should improve research methods in order to make more grounded predictions.

Mixed jabuticaba and apple sweet paste with addition of watermelon albedo

This study aimed to elaborate, characterize and evaluate the quality of a jabuticaba and apple sweet paste with addition of watermelon albedo. The paste was made and evaluated in relation to pH, soluble solids, moisture, titratable acidity, crude fiber, ascorbic acid, ashes, color, filamentous fungi, yeasts, and sensorial acceptance during the 90-day storage. The physicochemical and microbiological analyzes are in accordance with the literature and the legislation when comparing the different times of storage. The sensory analysis showed that the paste did not present statistical difference in the periods of 0 day and 90 days of storage with regards to color, flavor, aroma, appearance, consistency and overall liking. However, there was a significant difference in the purchasing intention, in which the sweet stored on day 0 had a higher mean score (4.26). The sweet paste was safe for human consumption and it was well accepted by the tasters. Its production is technologically viable.

Geography, the place and the subjects

The present work aims to understand how the relationship between individuals and places can be understood by the analysis of corporeities. Reinforcing the role of the body in the individual’s relationship with space is important for us to understand how these bonding links are created, as well as to understand the reflection of identities in corporeities and ways of acting in places. Tuan (1980), Oliveira (2014), Chaveiro (2014), Gomes (2013), Relph (2014) and others provide theoretical support for the understanding of the concept of place and some different views that Human Geography has on this category of geographic science analysis. This article concludes that the relations with the place are given by the experience that individuals have with the space and that the body is the vehicle by which they experience it. Therefore, it is important to reflect on identities and how they influence the connection of individuals with place through corporeity.

School and the ideology of gender ideology

The paper aims at bringing elements to the understanding of the relationship between ideology and gender in order to contribute to the current debate on the so-called "gender ideology" and education. Although the arguments are generic and without solid scientific basis, critics of the discussion about gender in schools end up creating a mystification of reality and a vision of an imagined world that intends to be formally imposed without criticism. The purpose of the study is to debate the nature of this ideology and the impossibility of thinking about scientific and political neutrality in any sphere of our experiences, including schools.

For a Geographic Engineering: from technique in geography to a technical geography

This article proposes Geographic Engineering as an alternative to (re) inserting the Geographer into the labor market of constant and intense transformations. It correlates the attributions of the Geographer with other professional categories, evidences their low representativeness in the market and factors that limit their recognition and professional performance. In the scenario of constant and intense transformations, which prioritize technical and pragmatic technologies and professionals, the rise of engineering courses is notorious. The proposal of Geographical Engineering is not seen as a trend, but as an option to promote autonomy, overcome crises, technological training and an efficient professional performance.

The concept of genre in three traditions of studies: an introduction

The main purpose of this article is to discuss the concept of genre (textual and/or discursive) in the light of three theoretical perspectives fairly widespread in the West, and which have significantly influenced research and the teaching of languages based on genres, especially in Brazil, namely the dialogical approach of the so-called Bakhtin Circle, the British approach known as English for Specific Purposes, and the American conception of Rhetorical Studies of Genres. The work presents a review of the literature, and closes with a discussion of the aspects that are common to the three theories.

Evaluation of energy efficiency and proposal of sustainable solutions for block E of the Fluminense Federal Institute Campus Campos Guarus

The development model used by society has amplified the use of natural resources, and as consequence of this disproportionate use, there is environmental impact. Therefore, one of the solutions to soften that process effects, is the efficient use of that resources. So, the search for sustainability reached the branch of civil construction, consequently setting goals for energy-efficiency. This work has as objective to evaluate the energy-efficiency of an edification at Fluminense Federal Institute Campus Campos Guarus. Two main points are addressed: air conditioning and lighting, since they're the biggest consumers on electric energy in a construction. This document uses methodologies provided in technical standard to calculate thermal load and technical lighting study. This way, solutions to improve energy-efficiency are listed, along with alternatives for optimization of consumption. Finally, these proposals are evaluated by the technical and financial viability. It’s noticed the efficiency of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps compared to fluorescent tube lamps and oversizing of the thermal load in the building E.

Popular knowledge and memories of Brazilian female students in Young and Adult Education at a rural school: connections with the Ethnomathematics

Life trajectory of “Brasiguaia” female students in the rural areas has relevant characteristics that can contribute, depending on the pedagogical teaching process, to the promotion of teaching and learning, considering their intercultural relations that converge in a favorable way to the empirical and scientific dialogue. Thus, based on life history, the main purpose of the article is to reflect on the memories of the Brazilian women enrolled in Youth and Adult Education (EJA in Portuguese) at a State Rural School, and the possible interfaces with the mathematical pedagogical use of that knowledge in the classroom. We proposed research questions that could establish connections between Youth and Adult Education, the life history of “Brasiguaia” students and ethnomathematics. We intend, therefore, to initiate a reflection on the theoretical and practical fertility of these discussion themes.

Microbiological contamination in Smartphones

Smartphones have become one of the most commonly used essential devices for daily communication. These devices are rarely disinfected, and contamination with various microbial agents may occur. Samples collected on smartphone touchscreens were analyzed to determine the counts of mesophilic aerobic bacteria, enterobacteria, molds and yeasts, total coliform bacteria and coliform bacteria at 45 °C. More than 70% of the analyzed apparatuses presented high contamination by aerophilic mesophilic bacteria and molds and yeasts, besides 25% by enterobacteria, being observed the presence of coliforms at 45 °C in 25% of the evaluated apparatus. The high contamination by aerobic mesophiles and molds and yeasts and the presence of coliform enterobacteria and bacteria at 45 °C suggest a health risk to users due to the possible presence of pathogenic organisms.

Operational Consumption of fuel of a sugar cane harvester

Studies have shown that using higher operational capacity harvesters render less fuel consumption per harvested area and, as a result, less operating expenses. This paper aims to obtain the effective fuel consumption per hour of the CASE IH A4000 harvester during the mechanical harvest of raw sugar cane. The study took place in a sugar cane plantation with mechanical harvest in an area belonging to a producer for Coagro (Cooperativa Agroindustrial do Estado do Rio de Janeiro Ltda.) (Agroindustrial Cooperative of the State of Rio de Janeiro), in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. The variety of sugar cane was evaluated at RB867515 in its third cut. The system of automatic data acquisition was built from a volumetric flow sensor to determine the fuel flow, in addition to a data collector (Datalogger) and a global positioning system (GPS) device. To determine the fuel consumption per hour, data from the fuel flow sensor were used. The consumption per hour of fuel was 33.9 L.h-1. The effective consumption was estimated in 1.84 L. ton-1. The consumption per hour and the effective consumption of the CASE IH A4000 were more than double of what the manufacturers stipulated, which means, the consumption is much higher than desirable.

Biological control of the South American rice water weevil, Oryzophagus oryzae, using light traps with Beauveria bassiana in irrigated rice field

The South American rice water weevil, Oryzophagus oryzae (Costa Lima), is an important pest of irrigated rice in Brazil. Its larvae damage the plant root system. The practice of biological control of this insect needs to be improved. Thus, a research was carried out to verify the mortality rates of O. oryzae, by the infection of individuals with Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. in light traps set in irrigated rice field. Two traps received an apparatus of fungal contamination, with mass of B. bassiana, prepared in autoclaved rice. A third trap, without apparatus, was maintained as a control. Insects captured from October 2013 to March 2014 were kept in the laboratory to verify mortality and fungal infection, characterized by the mycelial growth on body. The mortality rate of individuals artificially infected was 73.1%, whereas in the control was 0.8% (natural infection). Light traps with apparatus of fungal contamination were effective on the biological control of O. oryzae adults.

Educator Nietzsche: the artistic process of becoming what it is…

This text aims to think of education as an artistic process of human formation and human existence. In the wake of the criticisms that point to the formative process as homogenization and reduction of the human type to a single formation, this essay indicates the possibility of an education for singularity. Thinking along with Nietzsche, it lies methodologically beyond a set of premises and defend arguments, trying to explain, narrate and propose radical thoughts about education and life. Thus, it brings art as an element that enables education to be thought beyond immediate needs, art as an instrument that allows one to think of an education for life, not for an occupation or for an accumulation of knowledge. A formation to become what one is, without prior judgment of what we should be, but an opening to the multiple perspectives of human configuration. Triggered by the theme, it projects some characteristics of an education, of an educator and of an educated person imbued in an artistic process, where life is the work of art. It presupposes that life is becoming and that our pedagogical theories do not account for this existential move, so it causes us to think of an education as an artistic process, with no ultimate purpose, but a constant becoming what we are.
